My name is Allison Lowe and I go to the University of Pikeville. Since I have started college I have made the best of friends and I have even lost some “friends”. The friends I’ve made have been here for me through a lot and are like sisters to me. With those friends I went to my first University of Kentucky basketball game and had a blast! I am happily dating the love of my life and I do not plan on giving him up. I go to church with my family, boyfriend and his family. On the weekends we don’t do the typical dates like go to the movies or go out to eat. We usually go fishing, ride on a four-wheeler or just are lazy by watching movies at his house. We do go on typical dates though, sometimes.

Some things I absolutely love are coffee and chocolate! Any kind of coffee, except black, is what I like. Basketball is my thing! I love watching it! University of Kentucky is my favorite team and I will not root for any other team no matter what. Also, volleyball is my thing. I can watch that anytime of the day. I use to play it in high school, but didn’t want to during college so I could focus on my studies. I am thinking about playing my sophomore year in college though, if I can talk to the coach into it.

I love to sing to almost any kind of music. I listen to music everyday because it is my escape away from everything. If I am having a bad day I will play a song by The Letter Black because they have some hardcore background music, but the lyrics make me feel better. My family has the raw talent of being able to sing and everyone that has heard me sing says I can sing. I don’t think I can, but I guess I will take their word for it.

Now, let’s go back to my dark, high school years. During my junior year, it started out rough. I wasn’t really able to get a boyfriend because I was an awkward person and somewhat shy. Mom always told me that if I wanted a boyfriend I needed to fix my hair and put on make up. She even kept telling me that I needed to go a diet with mamaw and her. I always said no and if a guy liked me, he would like me for who I was. Needless to say she kept onto me and I fell into a depression. Not just because of her, but along with the bullying from school. I contemplated suicide, but I talked to two friends that were like brothers to me and tried talking to a friend that was supposed to be a sister. She just told me I was stupid and laughed. Overall, thanks to my two guy friends they helped me through it. I learned that you will find out your friends are in the worst of times.

Technology and I

Ever since I was about nine-years-old, I knew how to work with a computer. My Grammy would always have to ask me how to this or that on it because she didn’t know how. I enjoy working with computers and cell phones. Computers can help us extend our learning by letting us make PowerPoint’s and looking up videos if we need it for class. Also, using computers to type papers and sending them to our professors help save trees.

I have grown up using PC’s, so using MAC’s are totally different for me. Honestly, I hate MAC’s. I prefer to use PC’s. The thing is I do like other Apple products though. I have an iPhone 5 that is always by my side. I don’t get to see my boyfriend much throughout the week, so my phone is my way of staying in touch with him. We Facetime and text whenever either one of us are not busy. Also, my phone is the easiest way to keep in touch with my Grammy because I don’t see her a whole lot. I post pictures and statuses to Facebook, so she knows how I am doing and that I am having fun.

I am usually pretty good with computers and cellphones, well except for MAC’s. They are just difficult, but anyway I use to play some game systems. I would play things like the Wii and PlayStation 2, but nothing more. I try to play some newer game systems, but it just turns into people laughing at me. I guess I’m not all that with technology, but I can fix my Wi-Fi when it messes up at my house. Also, I am the one to fix my mom’s old television set whenever I’m home.

Wikipedia and I

How I first learned about Wikipedia was when I was in Grade School working on an informative paper about endangered animals. I just simply typed in the animals name and I clicked on the link that took me to Wikipedia. From what I can remember it had very good information and helped me a lot. I did have to tell my teacher where I got my information and she was not very happy. She said, “Wikipedia does not have good resources to get good and correct facts.” Needless to say, I didn’t get an A, but I did get better than most people in the class!

Honestly, I like Wikipedia and I think more professors should accept that we are going to use it since it is available to us. I know that volunteers are the ones on the site, but they do cite a lot of credible sources. Also, professors should allow us to cite Wikipedia because we are going to use it and we can always fact check by using Google or by clicking a link they have cited.

Even though professors say that Wikipedia does not have good or correct facts on the site, there is always a way you can figure out to do good research on a site like Wikipedia. I have been taught a way to do effective research on Wikipedia.
