Planet Green is a television network on satellite TV and digital cable TV in the U.S. run by Discovery Communications, which runs the Discovery Channel, and is the first channel dedicated to the subject of ecologically friendly living. Although some doubt the success of the network due to its focus on what some call a "fad", major advertisers General Motors (GM), S.C. Johnson, Bosch Appliances, The Home Depot, Frito-Lay, Waste Management, Johnson & Johnson, Dow Chemical, Whirlpool Appliances, Clorox, and Wachovia Bank have signed on to be the initial advertisers to the network, bringing in major advertising dollars. Planet Green aims to succeed by attempting to make the crisis become an even larger topic in an informative and entertaining way while not preaching about the subject to its audience. The network launched with 250 hours of eco-related programming and parent Discovery Communications invested $50 million on the creation of the network as well as advertising dollars to run the network.

Planet Green was launched in place of the former Discovery Home channel, a channel dedicated to home improvement and gardening.

Relaunch[edit]

Discovery Channel set plans in work to start a 24-hour channel in the second half of 2008 focused on eco-friendly living, as part of a push into the rising environmental movement with shows like "Ten Ways To Save the Planet".[1] Discovery Home was retired and its feeds were changed to carry Planet Green on June 4 2008.[2][3] The channel focuses on environmental issues and ecological living. Discovery is investing $50 million in original programming for Planet Green, with shows such as a weekly eco-newscast series with Bob Woodruff of ABC News.[4][5] No Discovery Home programming carried over to Planet Green.

Programming[edit]

Planet Green has lots of series either already airing or is in the works. Some of which include some with big-name celebrities including Food Network's Emeril Lagasse, HBO's Adrian Grenier, actor Leonardo Dicaprio (of Titanic, Catch Me If You Can fame), rapper Ludacris and rocker Tommy Lee, Tom Bergeron (Dancing with the Stars, Hollywood Squares, America's Funniest Home Videos fame), SuChin Pak (MTV News) and Daniel Sieberg (CBS News), Access Hollywood's Maria Menounos, as well as ABC News's Bob Woodruff. In addition, celebrities give green tips as the network's "will be back/we now return to" IDs.
