My concern about your username (博)[edit]

Hello, , and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at WP:RFC/NAME. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you again! Whitstable 16:34, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I realise you are 'patrolling recent changes', and i guess the above is boiler-plate. I don't quite understand your 'concern': could you perhaps be more specific?
Are you referring to the section 'Names with non-Latin characters'? You will note that i am urged but not required to provide a transliteration in my signature. Isn't that section rather outdated? In any case, there is a transliteration (several in fact, including two in Latin) on my user page - do you really need more?
In my opinion it makes my signature rather elegant and, since it is a link (a feature which presumably postdates the Policy), it is hardly difficult for others to find me.
You are correct in your belief that it is not .. inappropriate; there are such characters of course. We can discuss the meanings/connotations if you really want, but unless you have some knowledge of Far Eastern languages that would be rather tedious at this stage.
I am one of nine users with a Chinese character name on en.wikipedia.org, and there are several others with a non-Latin name.
Sorry if i've missed the point!
Thanks for the reply, it was very informative and thorough. I should stress that I am not personally going to report your username, it's just that there appears to have been a crackdown on usernames recently and I thought I would give you advance warning in case another editor does decide to make a formal complaint. All the best, Duke of Whitstable 18:50, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I do hope not. I am reluctant to change (but not resistant). -- 19:58, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Help![edit]

If you're asking about the name, I for one don't have a problem. If it had had a somewhat dubious meaning, I might have queried the reason. I do prefer to see names in Roman script as it makes thinking easier, but that's not in the rules... I'll leave the helpme in case you were going to ask something different. I see. I should have asked the question. I am sorry to be a nuisance, but after being away for quite a while i have forgotten my password and do not have a registered mail address. Can i regain control? I have a similar account on three other Ws. Thanks in anticipation! 86.7.16.229 (talk) 17:38, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm afraid not - see Help:Logging in#What if I forget the password? You will have to set up a new account. If you are particularly attached to this username, you could try asking to WP:USURP it, but that is normally only done once your new account is well established.
One possibility occurs to me, as you have accounts on other Wikipedias. See m:Help:Unified login. If you apply on one of your other WP accounts for a unified login in this name, and when they say it can't be done because of this account on en:wp, explain that it is your account but you have lost the password, that might be seen as a reason to let you usurp; but it might take some time, as they would probably want to send a message to this account and wait to see whether it had an owner who objected. Alas, i had already unified my passwords, so i have forgotten them/it all. I was particularly attached but some blighter had registered it on zh.. so i could not unify. I shall probably transfer my affections to another name. Thank you! 86.7.16.229 (talk) 06:20, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
