That's due to the fact that prior to 1825 the modern Mensur did not yet exist. Back the "target" was not the head but the upper body, either with sabres or an épée, this style of fencing was extremely dangerous due to the risk of puncturing lungs. Over time the fencing Fraternities agreed to increasingly safe rules which around 1825 lead to the modern so called Bestimmungsmensur which in it's modern form, is legally not a duel in the original sense. It's to be expected that prior to 1800 Schmisse weren't a thing
