Osiris

Do you approve of the removal from the Osiris page ? I am not entirely convinced by their arguments, at least I think the article should retain a link or a paragraph summarizing the material that has been removed. I know this kind of arguments do not hold on wikipedia but the two users who decided this in the course of a few days are relatively young (one registered in late december the other is semi-retired with less than 2000 edits), so I am wondering what you think of the situation since you're an experienced editor when it comes to ancient Egyptian religion. I would say the paragraphs they just removed were rather disjointed and off-topic (as opposed to the rest of the article, which is merely disjointed). So I don't object to their removal. Leaving some kind of summary makes sense, but parallels with / influences on Christianity are a touchy subject, and I don't want to get involved with it if I don't have to. A. Nemes/klaft

I've been blitzing through Wikipedia:Requested articles/Arts and entertainment/Fashion, creating redirects where appropriate (as for Calasiris/kalasiris) and adding quick notes to articles where a redirect may not be obvious (as with Kalasiris and Klaft). I did a quick sources scan for klaft before creating the redirect and adding the note, and saw that a number of sources linked it to the nemes, including the Norwegian Wikipedia article at no:Klaft. Doing a more in-depth search, I see it's an alternative spelling of "khat" which does seem to make more sense. Thanks for raising this, I should have looked at the sources more carefully and will revert my edit to Nemes and redirect Klaft to Khat (apparel). Mabalu (talk) 10:16, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Beside the book you proposed I know much more encyclopedias in German language about egyptian deities. ;-) Isis is a goddes known since 5th dynasty. Her origin is unknown, she appears more or less all of a sudden. What am I babbling, I will collect the very best books for you, study them and give you amounts of texts! The beliefs and rituals surrounding the gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt formed the core of the religion of ancient Egyptians. Authority to perform these tasks was controlled by the pharaoh, who claimed to be the gods' sole representative and managed the temples. Deities' diverse appearances in art—as animals, humans, objects, and combinations of different forms—also alluded, through symbolism, to their essential features. Yo! I´m done with Maria Münster's essay "Investigations about the goddess Isis". To be honest: In the end my study results are rather so-so than great. Most of the text is about the lament of Isis and Nephthys, furthermore the passages which could answer thine questions are... ummm... more hot air than content. On Khaemwaset and Naneferkaptah

The paragraph you added in the article on Khaemwaset relating the story where he seeks a magic book, describes a story that is suspiciously similar to this one: click here. I just read on the article of Merneptah the follwing : "Naneferkaptah was the royal heir, being the son of Merneptah's royal wife, Queen Isetnofret (Isisnofret), but he, his wife, and their heir died before the death of Merneptah, and their story survives in text.[7] " the source cited being precisely the text I sent you. I believe whoever added this sentence to the article on Merneptah was misled into believing Naneferkaptah was an actual historical son of Merneptah. Should we correct this ? Oldest identified royal mummy

Purported mummy of Merenre, Egyptian Museum

I just saw your edit on the Step pyramid article regarding the oldest identified mummy. I am not as positive as you are on the subject: for example, a damaged mummy was discovered in the sarcophagus of pharaoh Merenre in situ in the burial chamber of his pyramid during the first excavations there. Although it is doubted that the mummy was that of Merenre there is nonetheless a sizable community of egyptologists who think it is.

Similarly, mummified remains have been found in the sarcophagus of Menkaure, but these and the sarcophagus were lost to sea en route to the British Museum. About the purported mummy of Djoser, it was discovered by Jean-Philipe Lauer as he crawled inside of Djoser's scarcophagus to make measurement during excavations. He himself believed the knee was that of Djoser. Finally, there is the wrist of Djer whom some contend is indeed that of Djer although others state it could be that of a noble or a retainer originally buried in nearby tombs. But again the wrist is now lost. The problem with these mummies and especially pieces of mummy is that you don't expect them to have names written all over, e.g. on a knee or a wrist. Knowing this, it is hard to expect better evidence than a piece discovered in situ, e.g. in the sarcophagus, in the original burial chamber. Yes, I was wrong. I should asked for reliable sources in my edit summary rather than declaring it a hoax, but when I searched to find out whether he had died, the only reliable-looking source I found said it was a hoax. The problem is that celebrity-death hoaxes pop up all the time and invariably make their way to Wikipedia—because people hear a rumor and jump to Wikipedia to change the article immediately, without providing sources and probably without caring whether sources are available. What's really wrong with Wikipedia is that people jump to conclusions. The editors I was reverting were guilty of that, and so was I. A. Parrot (talk) 05:00, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

The god "Béhédety"

Hello, as I was writing the article on Senakhtenre Ahmose of the 17th dynasty, I found out that an inscription of his mentions a god, whose name is given in a French article as "Béhédety". I linked the mention of Behdety to Horus in the article on Senakhtenre Ahmose as you recommended and will add a note in the references that Behdety is a specific form of Horus (with a ref) if necessary. By the way, the mention of Behdety was uncovered on a lintel inscribed by Senakhtenre Ahmose in Karnak, i.e. in Upper Egypt. Would that indicate that this is the Behdety of Edfu? Major blunder

Hello, I just noticed a major problem with the identification of Sobekhotep I and II. Recently, the tomb of Sobekhotep I was discovered in Abydos, however, the archeologists are actually referring to Sekhemre Khutawy Sobekhotep and not Khaankhre Sobekhotep. This is a big problem because on wikipedia the article Sobekhotep I points to Khaankhre Sobekhotep whom the archeologist would refer to as Sobekhotep II. The problem is further obscured by the fact that the dynastic position of Sekhemre Khutawy Sobekhotep is debated, with some egyptologists seeing him as the founder of the 13th dynasty and others believing it was Wegaf. In the latter case, Sekhemre Khutawy Sobekhotep would be Sobekhotep II and Khaankhre Sobekhotep I. In any case, the mistake here is terrible because I and others have been editing the article Sobekhotep I with the discovery of the tomb when the rest of the article talk about Khaankhre Sobekhotep, who, regardless of the position of Sekhemre Khutawy Sobekhotep in the dynasty, is not the owner of the tomb. I should add that if we do not do this, people from all over the web who heard about the discovery of the tomb will type "Sobekhotep I" and end up on the page of Khaankhre Sobekhotep when archeologists talk about Sekhemre Khutawy Sobekhotep. Thus it is urgent to do something, and to avoid problems of who is I and II, we should just name the articles "Sekhemre Khutawy Sobekhotep" and "Khaankhre Sobekhotep". I have Ryholt's book, Baker's book and the Petrie Museum website confirming this blunder. I do not know how to change an article title, so please help me! Iry-Hor (talk) 10:21, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

This is actually really odd. These two zines are used in German article of Khaba, too. I took them, intrusting our article. I can't figure out, who exactly put these zines in, but I found out, that they are mentioned on a website hostet by Egyptologist Francesco Tiradritti. In far past, our portal in de.Wiki observed, that this guy works shockingly sloppy with his sources. He confuses titles and authors, mentions incorrect publishing works... names of the neteru

i have noticied that you changed/challenged some of my edits to the names of the ancient egyptian gods/goddesses. you stated taht you felt that changing the greek/european renderings of the names to the spellings more closely associated with their kemetic names could be confusing to the reader. i would like to humbly and respectfully disagree. i feel that it is a more accurate refection of the culture these figures proceeded from to use their original (or as close as possible) epithets. furthermore, i feel that any confusion should be further allayed by my use of the "pipe" tool where,if a user/reader simply mouses over the original kemetic name, the european/greek name willl be shown. i equate it to the slightly more respectful way of referring to the original inhabitants of the americas as "native americans", or their original, self appointed tribal names wherever available as opposed to calling them "indians" simply because the term enjoys a wider usage. the people of ancient kemet had names and concepts for their deities and ideologies that are often misrepresented when viewed through a european "lens" if there is something that i have overlooked, please feel free to let me know. thank you for reading

The basis of the "Solar" Egyptian calendar, which you accept, was based on the heliacal rising of Orion-Osiris in the East with the Sun Ra-Horakhty. The new year would begin when Orion rised in the East with the Sun Ra-Horakhty. The star or constellation (Osiris-Orion) would be "reborn" when it rose just before sunrise. Its interesting to note that the Armenian calendar of Navasard, was also linked with the solar Egyptian calendar, and the day of the Sun, the first day of Navasard 1, was when it was the day of the Sun rising, and Hayk-Orion is rising in the eastern horizon just before sunrise. Inform me--does this denote a censorious action, a brief perusal, a notification of following, or something else entirely? As you may have surmised, I am an extremely inchoate editor.

It's an oddball part of Wikipedia's software. Whenever a new page is created, it appears on Special:NewPagesFeed, where there are a handful of editors who look through the pages to see if they're valid (as opposed to the kind of vandalism, hoaxes, spam, and so forth that new users often create). Experienced editors are able to click a link on a new page to list it as "patrolled", meaning somebody's looked over it and the dedicate new page patrollers don't have to look at it further. The patrollers often have a backlog of pages to look at, so although I don't actually do new page patrol, I often click the "patrolled" button on new pages I come across, so the patrollers can concentrate on more problematic stuff. In your case, I happened across your user page while looking at Special:RecentChanges. Once I'd skimmed it, I clicked the button.

So the short version is, I marked your user page as "patrolled" to signal that it wasn't junk and other editors don't have to worry that it is. Not a censorious action—rather the opposite.

Thanks for the typo fix. Re the removal of "unnecessary italics", reading the article now, would you know which terms are covered in the mill machinery article? That is why the names of the various items are in italics in mill articles. It is impossible to avoid using technical terms when describing mills, hence the need to give the reader some indication as to where to find an explanation should they need it. December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone! Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world.
