Request reason:

My username 'YM_Industries' does not represent a group or organisation. It's just my username, which I use on many sites. At one point I had YM_Industries registered as a business name in Australia, but only for myself as a Sole Trader. The registration has since lapsed and I have no plans to use this name in a commercial context in the future. I do have a personal website under this name, but it just tells people how to contact me. Decline reason:

I understand that you use this as your username on other websites. However, "YM Industries" comes back as the name of a corporation and with a domain and website that matches. Aside from this, you state in your request reason that you had this username "registered as a business name in Australia" (though only under yourself). These reasons are why this username does not comply with Wikipedia's username policy and will need to be renamed to something else. Sorry, but these policies exist for good reasons (even though it doesn't make complete sense to you now)... All you need to do is request an unblock and provide us with a username that we can rename your account to that complies with Wikipedia's username policy; we'll change it for you and I'll be able to unblock your account and you'll be all set. Just give me a new username to rename you to, and we can go from there. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:23, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Thanks for reviewing my request so quickly. I'm really sorry to be a nuisance by appealing again, but I've read WP:UPOL and I still believe my username is acceptable. UPOL prohibits usernames that "unambiguously represent the name of a company, group, institution or product". The name YM_Industries was, at one point, used as a business name, yes. But while YM_Industries was a business, it was never a company (it wasn't incorporated), it was never a group (it was just me), I don't think it was an institution and it certainly wasn't a product. But more importantly, it doesn't exist anymore. You can see here (https://abr.business.gov.au/ABN/View?abn=95913735229) that it's cancelled. My username isn't promotional, there's nothing to promote. With regards to the website, UPOL says that "plain domain names [...] are sometimes acceptable, such as when the purpose is simply to identify the user as a person". This is the purpose of my username. It's not uncommon for people to have a website based on their username. "they are inappropriate if they promote a commercial Web page" My website isn't commercial. I just realised I hadn't updated it since 2014 and it still said "we" on it, I've now edited the site to make it clear that it doesn't represent any organisation. I understand the reason for Wikipedia's policies around usernames, but I don't think I fall afoul of them.

(Non-administrator comment) Yes, your current username violates our username policy as defined by WP:CORPNAME. Your best option is to take Oshwah's advice and just pick a new username. - FlightTime (open channel) 02:54, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So if something was ever used in the past as a company name, it's off limits as a WP username forever? WP:CORPNAME doesn't explicitly say, but it's using present tense so that's why I'd assumed it wouldn't be a problem. Also, I created my Wikipedia account before I registered the business name. Please don't take this as a personal attack or threat as I'm just intending it as an example, but if I registered 'FlightTime' as a business name would you be blocked and have to change your name? I'm not trying to be overly defensive, if the verdict is that I have to change my username then I will accept that, but I'm trying to understand WP's policy on this as it's still not fully making sense to me. I can see the intention of the rule, but I can also see that it allows for exceptions. In my case I'm wondering why I don't qualify for these, as for the reasons I've specified above I believe my username is clearly non-promotional. Thanks. Fine, have it your way. Good luck on your unblock. - FlightTime (open channel) 03:06, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

Difficult to come up with a username, all of my usual ones are already taken. I hope this one is suitable.

Accept reason:

I've changed your username, and since it seems to be the only reason for the block, I am removing the block. 331dot (talk) 09:23, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
