Your userpage declaration[edit]

Thanks for your comments on your user page - that is refreshing to see! Far too many companies send people to fix up their pages and make the company look good!

If you think more substantive or controversial materiel needs to be added, modified or removed, please post it on the talk page for the article. I'll make sure it gets considered and incorporated. - Ahunt (talk) 19:56, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I came here to say pretty much the same thing, it makes it much easier when editors are upfront about their actions. One more link for you, but given your statement I suspect you already read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. There may be other areas of Wikipedia that you can help with as well such as Flight Service Station, Canada Flight Supplement and probably some of the Category:Airports in Canada. Enjoy yourself. Enter CambridgeBayWeather, waits for audience applause, not a sausage 20:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ahunt and Cambridge Bay Weather. NAV CANADA quarterly financial results are due next week. These are legal financial documents filed with the regulatory bodies (Security and Exchange Commission). I will update some of the financial information when they are released.Albert Metcalfe (talk) 17:44, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 22:18, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiwings[edit]

Wikiwings
For exemplary transparency and open willingness to work with other editors on the article about the company for which he/she works. Other company reps trying to work on Wikipedia could learn volumes from this user. - Ahunt (talk) 23:59, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Updates[edit]

The financial information is very out of date, citing news release and financial staements from 2009. I will be inputting the current data, using the existing format.

Also, the section on ABCP is barely relevant to the Company's operations. HOWEVER, I will not remove it. But I will correct and update some of the information in that section for greater clarity and accuracy. Albert Metcalfe (talk) 16:08, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Quick suggestion. Could you upload an image of Nav Canada's headquarter building? I think it will be useful in the article. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:20, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If User:Albert Metcalfe does not have one I can certainly take one this weekend when I am in downtown Ottawa! - Ahunt (talk) 11:42, 12 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The name of the facility in Cornwall was changed to the NAV CENTRE in January 2011. Albert Metcalfe (talk) 19:32, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good, I just fixed the use of capitals as per MOS:TMRULES. - Ahunt (talk) 19:51, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question - I used the four tild signature after my edits on the main page, I assume that was wrong. The tilds are only to be used on the Talk page. Is that right? Albert Metcalfe (talk) 20:04, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly! It signs your name. - Ahunt (talk) 20:08, 2 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Ahunt. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Albert Metcalfe (talkcontribs)

Added Content (Space-based ADS-B)

The inability to track planes over oceans and other remote unsurveilled airspace has always been an important issue for international aviation, but the disappearance of MH370 has brought this to the attention of the media and the general public. To not mention that Nav Canada is a majority shareholder and founding partner in a company that will bring unprecedented surveillance to the entire globe (what has been called a "game changer" and revolutionary) seems like a major omission. Note that the added section is not written in a promotional style and is sourced using a variety of media. Albert Metcalfe (talk) 16:07, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted content. The section on the 2009 recession is dated, stale and of no relevance.Albert Metcalfe (talk) 16:07, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The new material looks okay, I just made a few linking and spacing changes to it. I did restore the history sections and will re-organize that too. Because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia we don't delete history items just because they are old. The main job of an encyclopedia is to record history. - Ahunt (talk) 16:17, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I understand that history is history, but if all there is is one small aspect - that had no long term impact - it is hugely disproportionate and misleading. There are volumes that can be written about Nav Canada's history, as the first wholly privatized ANS, the advanced technology developed by Nav Canada that has been sold around the world (Toronto tower was the first in the world to be paperless), the company's role on 9/11, the improved safety record, or winning the Eagle Award from IATA as the worlds best ANSP three times.

That none of this is mentioned on Wikipedia may be fine, but by the same token to leave that out and devote so much space to the 2009 recession makes this page a poor source of information.

Finally, there is one important remaining fact about the recession and Nav Canada it is this: Nav Canada did not raise its fees throughout the downturn. (contrary to some who predicted it would need to do so during a downturn in air traffic). In fact, there has been no increase in fees in over ten years, a period of time that saw two decreases in fees. The company has no control over the economy, all it could do is control its costs which it managed to do. That is the story. So if you insist on putting back a section on the recession, the holding of the company`s fees should at least be mentioned. Albert Metcalfe (talk) 17:14, 6 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is a good point and covered by WP:UNDUE. Let me cut it down and summarize it so it doesn't dwarf other information.
A more complete history would be great to add, is there a ref for that on-line? If so I will add it in. - Ahunt (talk) 02:46, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The most complete story of Nav Canada can be found in the document "Test of Time," found on our website.

http://www.navcanada.ca/EN/media/Publications/Test%20of%20Time-EN.pdf

"There are a number of third party references and academic papers on the subject, most notably by Glen McDougall of "MBS Ottawa inc." https://www.mcgill.ca/files/iasl/ANS_Report_final.pdf Starting on page 239.

The U.S. based Reason Foundation has many articles on Nav Canada which can be searched. http://reason.org/files/f3266f5983b60e901e2705d73c4048c9.pdf http://reason.org/news/show/air-traffic-control-reform-new-30 (New Study Shows that ATC Commercialization Works.)

NOTE - There have been some changes to Nav Canada's governance since many of these papers were written i.e. Board members are now elected, not appointed. I made that edit two weeks ago. (Corporate bylaws http://www.navcanada.ca/EN/about-us/Corporate%20Policies/NAV%20CANADA%20-%20By-Law%20No%2017-%20EN%20final.pdf)

At this point, given that the other sections have been cut down, I'm not sure how much detail on the history should be included. I will leave that decision to Ahunt and any other editors. Thank you for all your help, patience and openness to discussion. Albert Metcalfe (talk) 15:35, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thank you for those refs! The company has an interesting history, I will try to comb through those and add some details in the next week or so! - Ahunt (talk) 18:54, 9 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I manage some expansion in the lead part of the history section. Most of the sources deal with the "what" more than the "when" really needed for a history. See what you think. - Ahunt (talk) 01:19, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That looks like a good and accurate summary. Thanks.Albert Metcalfe (talk) 15:16, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comment, glad that looks good to you. I would like to add more history, particularly about the Hudson Bay ADS-B rollout and other similar scope projects if refs can be located. - Ahunt (talk) 15:18, 11 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
