Welcome to WP:INDIA

Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to the India WikiProject! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of India.

A few features that you might find helpful:

There are a variety of interesting things to do within the project; you're free to participate however much—or little—you like:

  • Want to know how good our articles are? The assessment department is working on rating the quality of every India article in Wikipedia.
  • Can you code? The automation department uses automated and semi-automated methods to perform batch tasks that would be tedious to do manually.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask another fellow member, and we'll be happy to help you. Again, welcome! We look forward to seeing you around! -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 04:36, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

2008 IPL Article

Hi Amog,

I notice you tried to edit the 2008 IPL article to include the winners of the fair play award in the infobox. However, the infobox template is a generic tournament infobox (Template:Infobox cricket tournament) and it does not have such a parameter. In any case, it probably isn't too important to have this in the infobox (unlike eg listing the tournament champion). There have been some suggestions on the talk page about including the "fair play table" in the article (and I don't think anyone has objected) so if you (or anyone else) wanted to add such a table, this would solve the problem you mentioned in your edit. BTW I have reverted your attempted edit to the infobox. Juwe (talk) 20:43, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I have vectorised the Chennai Super Kings logo. I don't have permissions to upload new files/update current ones, since I haven't made more than 10 edits. Please update the current logo with this one. [Chennai_Super_Kings.svg] Shoban Preeth (talk) 07:40, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

VIT

Hi Amog, I dont understand what was the need for deleting the below mentioned article from VIT page. Please leave some real things on the page rather than just some links to the page controlled by VIT. Wikipedia is not a linking program.

"But most of the admissions to popular courses is done through backdoor means rather than VITEEE. High Donations are taken from parents for the popular courses. The best citation would be the admission process of the year 2006 when the Biotechnology course seats were sold out well before the VITEEE was conducted! " Hooaamai (talk) 08:43, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi Amog,Do you think we can find references to such things??Thats the whole point of maintaining a wikipedia page.Hooaamai (talk) 02:26, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi feels just right to most of us because that's how we tend to refer to him. However, his name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and so the question is whether there is a justification for not using his real name on the wikipedia article. It doesn't seem like there is such a justification (one should have a very good reason to not use the real name) and not naming the article Mahatma Gandhi does not make him any less a Mahatma. Of course, both Gandhi as well as Mahatma Gandhi redirect to the article so its not as if the name has any practical effect. --Regents Park (roll amongst the roses) 20:29, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I remember my textbooks referring to him as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi though popular literature used Mahatma. I remember my Hindi teacher making us write biographical essays on him and we had to use the entire name in the title and then write the essay in second person (aapka janam 1869 me porbander me hua - that sort of thing). Of course, I'm much older than you and grew up in a very different India and can imagine things being different now but the full name does seem more encyclopedic. --Regents Park (roll amongst the roses) 12:48, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Hello! I see you're one of the few who agree with me regarding the common use and referral to Gandhi as Mahatma Gandhi and not his full name (which I've never heard anyone use in conversation...ever).

You mentioned text books and the like. Those are the type of sources we need to get this changed back to the way it was, the right way per WP Naming policy. The WP policy's first way to decide an article's name is the common usage in English. That could be supported by such things as text books and the like.

Could you dig out these sources? That would help our cause greatly. Feel free to respond on my talk page! Beam 18:07, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

After reviewing your request for rollback, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback can be used to revert vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback may be removed at any time.

If you do not want rollback, then contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some information on how to use rollback, you can view this page. I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, just leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Rudget (Help?) 14:01, 14 June 2008 (UTC)

That's a good point. I think generally rollback is more potentially damaging to the 'pedia than Twinkle. At least I think so. Rollback is much more likely, in my opinion, to be used inappropriately (i.e. edit warring etc.) and this can lead to the disablement of the feature. I've never used twinkle, so, of course, this may be all wrong. This would probably be a better question asked at User talk:AzaToth (who is, as far as I know, the main guy behind Twinkle) or for WT:RFR (where there are regular discussions on the rollback feature). Rudget (logs) 12:07, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
By the way, nice archive box. Rudget (logs) 12:08, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Aye, but so does rollback. I think this research should be carried out with those who have more knowledge of twinkle. :) Rudget (logs) 12:59, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
In many cases, with abuse of twinkle, an administrator can delete or remove the code from the respective monobook.js, and then set the protection level to sysop so they can't re-add it. Rudget (logs) 15:50, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

mKR & mKE status

Hi. Have you got any idea what's happening today? I put notes on mKR talk & mKE talk, and finally one on AfD talk, mentioning the other two. I wonder when I will hear anything? Rhmccullough (talk) 16:31, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

GAN of Sri Venkateshwara College of Engineering

Hi there, as a member of the WP:India Assessment Team, I noticed that you nominated the article at the WP:GAN. I really feel that the article is still under-developed in terms of various aspects. This might not help you much, but please see Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur to get an idea of what you should be aiming for. If I were the GA reviewer, I would not be really happy to review this article in its present form. I'm sure that with good amount of research and detail, this can form a GA. Should you need any assistance, please let me know and I shall do the possible. Cheers! Mspraveen (talk) 06:10, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Just when I thought I found time to reply back, I saw Sir Blofeld doing the honors. I certainly agree with him - short and snappy sentences don't make a good article. My suggestion is/was that the IIT Kharagpur article will just exemplify all that you need for the utmost in quality. Try building it on those lines and even though the reliable references will be an hindrance for an institute like this, I will try till it reaches A-class. Best regards, Mspraveen (talk) 14:26, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi I noticed this on Praveens talk page. It isn't GA quality yet. What I would suggest is that first of all you fill out some of the sections. There are far too many short snappy paragraphs and sentences which affect the flow of the article. I don't want to see any section less than three lines long. In places it is a list which could do with some style changing. It also needs copyediting in places from what I've seen. Other than this it has a major problem with referencing, not enough citations if you are filling it out and also the references aren't given to a high enough standard, e.g see references on the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur article and you'll see a lot more details are given than just the website it was obtained from. The biggest problem though is the lack of those "meaty" sections. Good luck ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:13, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

LOL No you're not understanding the irony. The relationship between Bond and Blofeld is an ironic one and hyberbolic. Given that they are ultimate enemies of each other they tend to be friendly towards one another when meeting and Blofeld places in him easily escapable situations. As the plot is often to thin, the idea that Blofeld has indeed been expecting him despite orderingh to have him assassinated is purely intentional. Its my humor. Good luck with the article. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 14:18, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Exactly, the relationship is intended to be an overly friendly one, given that they are sworn enemies. Its the same with other villains such as Scaramanga in Golden Gun and Franz Sanchez in License to Kill where the villain seems very fond of Bond. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:23, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

user-friendly

I understand what you said, and accept it. Have you changed it? Or shall I? Rhmccullough (talk) 06:01, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

I'll do it. Rhmccullough (talk) 06:05, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

I did a quick scan of C (programming language) and didn't see "user-friendly" mentioned. It would surprise me to hear somebody call C a user-friendly language, because I'd say it's on the low end of the "higher-level" languages. Am I misinterpreting your remark about C and user-friendly? Rhmccullough (talk) 06:24, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Amog? Am I talking to myself? Did you leave my talk page before I started talking about abstract concepts & general purpose KR? Rhmccullough (talk) 07:05, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

I think I'll call it a night. I can't keep track of who's on what page anymore. Thanks for all the helpful advice. Rhmccullough (talk) 07:38, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

SVCE issue

Hey amog, why was the swimming pool and the med centre pics removed?? (Kaushikmechano (talk) 04:05, 24 June 2008 (UTC))

Re:Regarding this edit

I had already tagged a large number of that user's uploads, so I would rather I offered them a decent explanation of why those images were being deleted and gave them a chance to respond. I would rather avoid deleting a large number of uploads from a good faith established user who is in the right area. Furthermore, if we're going to be picky, I would say they were not I9, but I3, as I suspect the uploader had permission for them to be uploaded to Wikipedia, provided they were unmodified. J Milburn (talk) 15:38, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Deceptive edit summary?

Can I ask why you believe that removing a deletion notice on an image without addressing the concern constitutes a cleanup? J Milburn (talk) 15:54, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Re: WARNING Vista users and FF3

I was also warning my fellow editors about the above. Kathleen.wright5 21:13, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but putting that in the talk page isn't the way you should go about it. - Amog | Talkcontribs 06:00, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletions

Hi there. I notice you've been tagging quite a few articles for speedy deletion recently. For example, you tagged Foothills Middle School and Billimari, New South Wales, both of which had been vandalised. I checked both though and found that, whilst they had been vandalised, there existed perfectly good versions of them in the article history. And google searches reveal that both are real places that meet notability guidelines.

Please be very careful in speedy tagging; it's a very powerful tool. So, as politely as possible, please be a bit more careful with the speedy tagging. Thanks. — Lincolnite (talk) 08:43, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Wanted

That wasn't vandalism, which you just reverted. The last line of the book Wanted really is "This is my face as I'm fucking you in the ass" not "I enjoy eating piles of cheese."

Ah okay. Sorry. Please add citations since addition of explicit words appear vandalism. - Amog | Talkcontribs 07:52, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

I have explained my removal in the discussion page, if you would care to look. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.67.180.127 (talk) 10:05, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Need help on South Asia ASAP.

I have a wiki-stalking IP on my back making drastic edits without any consensus. Please help Thegreyanomaly (talk) 03:22, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

The edits appear drastic, but don't look like vandalism. - Amog | Talkcontribs 05:58, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

I was being really stupid. There is no vandalism. The IP is fine. BTW I had one other question. Can you remake the vegetation map to include Tibet and Myanmar, so that it could fit all the definitions of South Asia. Thx. Thegreyanomaly (talk) 10:39, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
