2004 cutoff[edit]

I do not understand why you've changed the MEP year category, it seems a very odd title. Thanks.- J Logan t: 17:43, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map[edit]

Hi,

This is with respect to this image: Image:India subdivisions flood hit between July 3 and August 15 2007.png

Its a good effort, but there are a few things about the image that make it unsuitable for wikipedia.

  1. Format is PNG. The recommended format is SVG, a vector format.
  2. The raster template map is obsolete. It uses old colours. The new map Image:India-states-numbered.svg, has the newer colouring as recommended by the Wikimaps project.
  3. Map is POV and biased. Although you have listed the dispute, it still does not depict the actual status on the map. Remember, maps are visual, and footnotes cannot be a band-aid patch for POV rectification.

Would you be comfortable with creating a new SVG map from the newer templates we have? Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:24, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My replies:

  1. Use of standard colors – Those colours are mentioned on Maps project. Based on the recommendations made by the Maps project, we launched Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian maps. The project offers four distinct colours that would be visible to visually-challenged users too. So, we don't have an issue here.
  2. Accusations of bias – I was not insinuating you of bias, rather the fact that such a map is POV despite footnotes present on the image page. Remember, readers view the map, they never view the image page.
  3. Creation of a new SVG map – It's unfortunate that you cannot access software (viz Inkscape) for map creation. At one point of time, I too did not know how to draw maps, but necessity proved stronger that a long wait, so I learned to create my own maps in inkscape. Thus, for all SVG maps we have of India, are derived from my India map. Instead of using the older template map, you can use the PNG format of this image Image:India-states-numbered.svg to highlight states of India.
  4. It's not to difficult to edit SVG. If you do have knowledge of XML, and SVG, you can use any text editor such as Notepad to edit the shaded regions.
  5. Anyways, having a map, is better than having no map, so please, under no circumstances am I mentioning that what you are doing is bad. It's just that there are more professional levels that can be achieved for cartography.

Thanks! As a short term measure, it does suffice. However do mark up the image page with the tag {{converttoSVG}} {{ConverttoSVG|Map}} to add it to a category that notifies cartographers about pending PNG conversions. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:56, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
