removal of soundfile[edit]

hi andrew, i noticed you removed my contributed and CC usable sound file of a bicycle i've recorded. is it because i add that i recorded it? i could have removed that, if that was a problem?

hope to hear from you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArnoudTraa (talkcontribs) 11:54, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nope. I removed it because, after listening to it, I didn't think it added anything useful to the article. -AndrewDressel (talk) 12:54, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Andrew,
I'm a bit surprised. I worked on a project (created by wikimedia) to transfer several hundred sounds to the dutch wikipedia site. Bicycle sounds where part of it, among many other 'descriptive' sounds.
You don't think it's not useful because of what reason? (there is a bicycle bell sound on it). Do you not think it could be interesting for a person who has never cycled a bike, to hear it? ArnoudTraa (talkcontribs) 14:54, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it is a little hard to describe why something is not useful, similar to how "to prove that something is impossible is usually much harder than the opposite task." The utility of recorded bicycle bell is due to the fact that bicycle bells are designed to be heard. Their purpose is to make sound, and so the nature of that sound is relevant. Bicycles are not made to make sound, and many make little to no detectable sound at all. Thus the sound of a bicycle is as helpful to the bicycle wikipedia article as the sound of trees would be to the tree article. -AndrewDressel (talk) 15:02, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that a bicycle bell has that purpose, but than it's better suited for the bicycle bell page, isn't it? Perhaps it's my imagination, but every bicycle definitely sounds different and people actually comment on the noise or sound other peoples bike make. i agree to disagree and am a little dissapointed that you take this so seriously as not to allow 1 sound to be added. if wikipedia want to be a place for shared knowledge and facts, this is the opossite. - ArnoudTraa (talkcontribs) 16:04, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The bicycle sound is also provided in the bicycle bell article. Some other editor thought it is a sound characteristic of bicycles as well, and apparently no one has objected. The only time I have heard someone comment on the noise of someone else's bike is when the derailleur needs adjustment or the chain needs lubrication. Please read the article what Wikipedia is not to understand what content is appropriate. Specifically "a Wikipedia article should not be a complete exposition of all possible details, but a summary of accepted knowledge regarding its subject." -AndrewDressel (talk) 16:14, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Uppadine bicycles[edit]

Henry Uppadine was one of the very first people to manufacture racing bicycles for the tour to France… But he is omitted from your list of bicycle manufacturers... although the company is no longer in business it was pretty famous and there is a rumor that he did invent the Rams style handlebars.. I can't confirm that it's just from family folklore .. thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1:B04F:617C:F4F8:CA1:8CB8:F17 (talk) 01:21, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I created the article: Uppadine Cycles. There is not much source material available online. Feel free to add what you can. A picture would be great. -AndrewDressel (talk) 13:48, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
