March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Personal style preferences

Please stop mass-editing articles about Roman gentes to change "at Rome" to "of Ancient Rome". "At Rome" is perfectly acceptable in English; indeed, "at" any place is normal usage and should not automatically be converted to "of" or "in" or anything else. That the topic is "ancient" Rome is generally to be understood from the context; but the phrasing in each article varies slightly, in part to avoid becoming overly formulaic; some say "at ancient Rome" and some don't; it's neither necessary nor desirable to make them all conform to the same phrasing.

I don't agree. Rome is a modern city. Ancient Rome is a civilization now disappeared. I doubt that all readers, especially those jumping into the article in some casual way, should "generally understand the context".

Also, please avoid removing images from articles such as "Roman naming conventions" on the grounds that they don't relate to the "argument". Aside from the fact that the article text is a discussion, and not an argument, these images were carefully chosen because they illustrated the culture being discussed, and because of the need to break up walls of text; you're unlikely to find many images of names being used by people, but you can easily find images of people belonging to the culture whose names are being discussed. In this case, an Etruscan fresco in a section discussing the interplay of Etruscan, Latin, and other Italic names in the development of the system; and a painting of a Roman child next to the discussion of names being bestowed on Roman children. They may not directly depict the names, but they're the next best thing, and necessary for a long article that would otherwise be all text. P Aculeius (talk) 13:00, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

My opinion remains that those images were added just for decoration. This style of illustrating articles is more proper for magazines than encyclopedias, I think. If the images describes a child who is spoken of inside the article, it's OK. Otherwise is just decoration, as you justified it "otherwise be all text". Where's the problem?. Readers are highly unlikely to reach any articles about Roman gentes by accident, or from anywhere other than topics about "ancient" Rome; and when English speakers refer to "Romans" or "Roman" topics, I think it's almost universally assumed to refer to antiquity, unless something about the context clearly indicates otherwise. That said, many of the articles already use the phrase ancient Rome in the lead. However, it seems pedantic to insist that every article about Roman topics declare that they're ancient Roman topics. As for the question of illustrations, I think it's perfectly appropriate to include an illustration of a Roman child with a discussion of cultural practices relating to Roman children, or a distinctly Etruscan fresco in a discussion of Etruscan cultural practices. You may regard them as "just decoration", but ultimately that's what most illustrations are; very seldom is an illustration strictly necessary to the understanding of a topic. Precisely what is the benefit of removing the illustrations in question? Does removing them make the text more readable? Certainly not; if anything it makes them less readable. Is the conservation of space an issue where articles don't exist in printed form? No. If you think that articles about abstract concepts such as nomenclature shouldn't have illustrations, you're free to write them that way, but I think forcing other editors to conform to your preferences impoverishes Wikipedia as a whole. Toast sandwich

DoctorWho42 has given you a Toast sandwich! Bread (🍞), toast (🔥), and bread (🍞) promotes WikiLove (📖💞) and hopefully this one has made your day better. Toast sandwiches are wonderfully delicious! They are made by putting a thin slice of toast between two thin slices of bread with a layer of butter, and adding salt and pepper to taste. Its origins can be traced to the Victorian years. Xanth novels

It seems there is an unintentional edit conflict with the Wikipedia articles for the individual Xanth novels. Having seen the template before on some of the articles and not others, I thought it had been missing. After the second edit, I thought something strange was happening, and that's when I checked the edit history and noticed that you had intentionally replaced the {{Xanthchar}} template with the ==Characters== section.

I wanted to write to apologize for the misunderstanding and for unintentionally undoing what you had done. You are clearly a more competent editor than I am, and I acquiesce to your edits. I believe there may be still several of the Xanth novel articles that still use the {{Xanthchar}} template. I will undo the changes that I had just made to the two articles before I noticed your edits.
