Holoki & Digitaldua

Thank you for your report to Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention (UAA). Whilst the username was a concern, the guidelines at the top of UAA, its instructions at WP:UAA/I, and the policy guidance at WP:BADNAME all recommend to report spammers to the most appropriate board (in this case WP:AIV). Regardless, good work and thanks for your diligence. NJA (t/c) 11:45, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for your message re: User:Holoki. I didn't report to AIV because although they obviously were spamming, they hadn't had any warnings until the one I gave, so I didn't think that was appropriate. Is that not the case? Had they not been spamming or had only added, say one link, would you not have blocked them as a violation of the username policy? Just trying to get it all straight in my head - thanks. --BelovedFreak 11:51, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Likewise User:Digitaldua - had only one warning and hadn't edited after warning. Isn't that more of a username concern? Regards, --BelovedFreak 11:52, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Heya, thanks for the quick reply. It is a bit confusing, I admit. Essentially we try to limit UAA to blatant name policy violations, where there's nowhere better to report it. Since there was obvious spamming of external links by the two names I mentioned, then WP:AIV would be the best place. However, and admittedly confusingly, if only a link or two had been done by the name(s), then the most serious concern of the two (i.e. name violation versus spamming) would have been the name, thus making it more of a UAA concern in this scenario. Honestly I'm not trying to discourage or confuse you, just hoping that you might be able to see the subtlety between the two scenarios, and thus making your reports that much better. Ask away should you have questions or are completely confused. :) NJA (t/c) 12:00, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok thanks for explaining. It is confusing - it's very subtle, isn't it? But I see where you're coming from. I'll go back an re-read the policies and go from there! --BelovedFreak 12:08, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

BIt of help

Hi ther! Hope ur ok, Hope you dont mind me bothering you! But you said I could ask if I needed any help. I woul dlike to add an image to one of the pages I've worked on (Tee. A. Corinne) but not sure about what I need to do or how to do it? Could you enlighten me?

Regards!

Orionsbelter (talk) 17:33, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Ok, first of all, where is the image from? Is it one you've taken yourself, or have you found it on the internet? Do you know if it has a copyright? --BelovedFreak 17:36, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there!

I don't actually have an image yet - but I have had a look about on the internet. How can you tell if its subject to copyright? Orionsbelter (talk) 17:38, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Usually it will be, unless it specifically states that it has been released under a different licence. With articles about living people, we can only use (nearly always) free images of people since it technically should be possible to obtain one. Since Corinne is no longer alive, it's unlikely that a free image would be obtainable, so a non-free image may qualify as "fair use". It's quite complicated, but have a look at Wikipedia:Non-free content which goes over the issues. To actually go about doing it, you would need to upload a picture via the "upload file" link in the toolbox to the left. You need a rationale to go with it, basically to demonstrate why the image is needed in the article, can't be replaced etc. Here is an example: File:Flora Sandes in Salonika with Kara George Star medal.jpg. Also note that the image needs to be a small size & resolution. Having done a little google search of images myself, I would suggest going for a straightforward picture of her, not one of her with someone else, and not one that is particularly "artistic" - maybe one like this? --BelovedFreak 18:04, 3 February 2010

(UTC)

Thanks for the advice Belovedfreak! Although I would quite like to add an image to the article, I think it may be a bit too complicated for me to attempt! I'll put a note in the talk page of the article and ask someone else to have a go for me! Orionsbelter (talk) 20:07, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

It is quite complicated, but let me know if you want to go for it, I don't mind talking you through it / checking on the result. --BelovedFreak 14:28, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Know what you mean about complicated! I've found an image - and have up loaded it onto the system (thanks for explaining how) but have renow recieved a mesage saying it is being deleted after a week! What should i do? Regards! Orionsbelter (talk) 18:31, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

The key to this is using a fair use rationale. Non-free images without a rationale will be deleted because you have to say why you think using that image qualifies as fair use. I've added a rationale for you, so hopefully it won't be deleted now. The important bit of the rationale is the last bit where you say why it's not replaceable.--BelovedFreak 19:19, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Why are you deleting the anole care links?

Wikipedia is meant to HELP people. Someone who may have found an anole either outside or in a box of oranges* may search wikipedia for info on it hoping to care for it.

  • yes that did happen. Someone clicked on my link through wikipedia, read my care site, and emailed me saying that he would've just killed it had i not helped him.

Do you want dead lizards haunting you?

Heaven forbid, no. Replied at User talk:Mrgoogfan.--BelovedFreak 12:26, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
from User talk:Mrgoogfan:
Hello, I removed the links to your website because they don't really add anything of encyclopaedic value to the articles. I'm sure your website is very helpful, and I'm glad you're able to save lizard lives, but that's not really what Wikipedia is about. There are lots of helpful websites out there that help people, but this is an encyclopaedia. It's not a directory of links, or a how-to guide. (See What Wikipedia is not.) If you have useful information to add to these articles, then please add it as prose, and make sure it's backed up by reliable sources. Not your own website though, that would be a conflict of interest. Wikipedia is also not here to help you promote your own website. Let me know if you still have questions, Regards, --BelovedFreak 12:23, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
Well the thing that really bugs me is that those links have been up for over a year and nobody had a problem. Only when i updated them because i moved the website did they get deleted. Many admins have visited those pages while they were up and do not seem to be bothered by them, only you.
Also i have noticed that someone other anonymous user seems to have reverted your edits in disagreement with you. It wasn't me. my ip is 71.186.193.167. This only proves my point that people feel those links are useful. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrgoogfan (talkcontribs) 19:43, 8 February 2010 (UTC)
Ok, well I can understand you feeling annoyed when they were there for so long, but the thing is, Wikipedia is a work in progress. It has millions of articles and millions of articles that are less than perfect and need work done on them. Just because other editors have seen the articles and not noticed the links up until now, or were not bothered by them, doesn't mean that ultimately they should be there. "People" may feel that links are useful but people are also capable of using google to find sites like yours. It's not just me that thinks like this, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not is a Wikipedia policy.
It seems that you know a lot about anoles, and you seem to want to improve Wikipedia, so it would be great if you could improve the articles in other ways. Blue anole for example is a very short article, maybe you could find some information from reliable sources and add to it. Maybe you have some books or magazines about anoles that would have some useful information that could be added. Regards, --BelovedFreak 15:23, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
About your Third Opinion request:
Disclaimers: Although I am a Third Opinion Wikipedian, this is not a Third Opinion in response to the request made at WP:3O, but is merely some personal observations and/or information about your request and/or your dispute. I have made no previous edits on any articles about anoles and have no known association with the editors involved in this discussion. My personal ethical standards for issuing third opinions can be viewed here.

Comments/Information: While I can understand why the Third Opinion request for this dispute is pointed here rather than to a single article talk page, you really need to itemize the affected pages and removed links here, or at least provide diffs to them. A Third Opinion Wikipedian can't evaluate the links and their propriety to their respective articles unless they can see them, and not many of us volunteers — including me — are going to go to the trouble to dig them out of your user contributions.

Note to other 3O Wikipedians: I have not yet "taken" this request, removed it from the active request list at the WP:3O page, or otherwise "reserved" it, so please go ahead and opine on it if you care to do so.TRANSPORTERMAN (TALK) 03:16, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Anole Care Is this the one Off2riorob (talk) 16:27, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

  • WP:ELNO Although nice, the content looks like its on personal web pages from someone who is interested in the topic but there is no assertion that the person is a recognized authority on the subject, so no. Similar content could be added to the articles to help people though, if you can find similar stuff on wikipedia reliable sources. Off2riorob (talk) 16:48, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Third Opinion Hi, I found this on WP:3O. The addition of the link in question to existing articles appears to violate WP:ELNO. Instead, since User:Mrgoogfan appears to be interested in the use and care of Anoles as pets, they could start contributing to Wikipedia on the subject. A good place to begin would possibly be creating a section such as Polychrotidae#Use as pets, where, using reliable sources (i.e. not his/her personal web page), they could contribute the information they seem to think is missing from Wikipedia. Keep in mind, however, that Wikipedia is not a how-to guide. Mildly MadTC 17:04, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Rebuttal

So what everybody is saying is that if i did not write the website myself, it would be fine. Well i have bad news for you. There WAS an anole care website written by an expert (anole herpetologist) but he was ill for quite some time and died early last year. The website went down with him. Now all websites on the matter are written by "normal" people or are pet store caresheets (which are quite possibly the WORST way to care for your pet). All of the websites really contain nothing but a few paragraphs on the subject, while mine contains pages. For example look at the first pages on google when one types "anole care" and see how little info there is.

  1. 1 [1] small wikihow on subject
  2. 2 wikipedia itself
  3. 3 [2] small care sheet
  4. 4 [3] better than the rest, but still not very comprehensive
  5. 5 [4] isnt comprehensive, and some suggestions are dangerous for anoles!
  6. 6 [5] seems to be a blank page
  7. 7 [6] tiny caresheet giving terrible info.
  8. 8 [7] another small caresheet
  9. 9 [8] is an advertisement.

My website has been up for 4 years and it is still not indexed by search engines, because they dont like subdomains. Really the only way people (so far 8,000 of them) can see it is through those wikipedia links. I was suggested to put a small burb about anloe care on wikipedia, with my references as one of those websites. Not only would the references lead to crappy websites, some with info that may be dangerous to the anole's health, but honestly, nobdy looks at the references. They bowse the article and look at external links. Over 8,000 people have followed that link. I have received numerous emails thanking me for providing the best info. I have also received many emails asking for further help. I feel that i have made a damn good rebuttal, and if nothing else, i will hold a poll on the subject. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrgoogfan (talkcontribs) 20:17, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

No, if you hadn't written the website yourself, it still would not be an appropriate external link, or an appropriate reference, since it's not a reliable source. The fact that it is your website just adds the further problem of a conflict of interest. If there are no websites out there that would be reliable sources, then that's a shame, but there's not much we can do about that. What about books, newspapers, academic journals? I do believe that you want to improve Wikipedia and your edits outside of this issue seem to be in good faith, but the more you argue about Wikipedia driving visitors to your website, the more it sounds like you are acting in the interests of self-promotion. --BelovedFreak 20:36, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Again, Wikipedia is not the place to promote your website. If you want to increase traffic to your site, you should find another way to do so, perhaps by setting up your site so it is indexed by Google. As stated by WP:ELNO #11: "One should avoid links to blogs, personal web pages and most fansites, except those written by a recognized authority." As far as reliable sources are concerned, if you doubt the quality of available internet sources, I'm sure there are plenty of academic papers or non-internet sources on the subject that you can use. After all, how did you acquire the information for your site? Mildly MadTC 20:50, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
I AM NOT JUST TRYING TO PROMOTE MY SITE! i am trying to help other people. someone who is looking for anole care isn't going to search the web for academic papers, buy a book, etc. Wekipedia is meant to be an EASY WAY TO HELP PEOPLE. I am really starting to lose faith in this once- user created website. Every change that some admin does not agree with gets shot down. This website seems to be run now by admins, not the community it was meant to help. "the encyclopedia anyone can edit" ...bullshit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrgoogfan (talkcontribs) 05:08, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
As I said, I do believe you're trying to be helpful, but it sounds a little like you're trying to promote it when you're complaining that it's not indexed by search engines and that all of your visitors come via Wikipedia. This issue has nothing to do with "admins v users" - none of the people that have spoken to you in this thread are admins, we are all just ordinary users like you. It is still a user created website, but there are so many users, it's important that we build consensus. Policies and guidelines are written by users over many years. They represent the consensus of the community. They're not set in stone, and changes can be made, if consensus is reached. We've made suggestions on how you can help improve those articles, and I hope you take them up. Noone is suggesting that people looking for anole care reads journals or (heaven forbid) buy a book, we were suggesting that if you have books, you could use them to improve the articles. Wikipedia is, as you say, the "encyclopaedia anyone can edit" - not the "link directory that anyone can add their link to".--BelovedFreak 10:05, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

I am writing to you regarding your elimination of a link for HAMBURGER. I understand your concern. However, the link was added with the pure intention of diplaying current examples of what typical "the Lot" burgers consist of in Australia.

I believe that "the lot" burgers are already described in the article. If you wish to expand on that, then please do, with references to reliable sources (ie. not your own blog). If you feel that the article needs more pictures, then please upload free images to the commons and then add a link to them from within the article, which will display the image. Let me know if you need more help with that. Please also have a read over Wikipedia:External links and Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not. Regards, --BelovedFreak 15:48, 6 March 2010 (UTC)
