Iowa Barnstar

Good work on the barnstar!! I Love it!! CTJF83Talk 17:09, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar

Very cool - also, thanks! --Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:17, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks from me too! I had fun learning about Iowa while researching these museums. If you come upon any missing ones, please add them in! Jllm06 (talk) 02:30, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Sutliff Bridge

Thanks for taking the picture of the collapsed Sutliff Bridge: you can see that I've created an article about the bridge, as it was on the National Register of Historic Places. Nyttend (talk) 01:53, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Sauganash article

Thank you for creating that new map for the article. It's definitely appreciated. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 21:48, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Swedesburg picture

Looking at Swedesburg iowa.jpg, I was quite curious: aside from being at the post office, do you remember where in the community this is, i.e. what intersection? A church in Swedesburg is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and your picture would be useful for that church if the one pictured is it. Nyttend (talk) 20:25, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Moreover, since your job takes you all over Iowa, could you look at the list of National Register sites in Iowa, and try to get pictures of them when you have the chance? So few of these properties, especially ones in small communities, have pictures, and it would be invaluable if you could try to do this. Nyttend (talk) 20:29, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your note! Have you ever uploaded pictures to the Wikimedia Commons? If not, I'd encourage you so to do, as they're more useful there (other projects besides the English Wikipedia can use them) and easier to find, as many more user-created pictures are uploaded there than on Wikipedia.
On a related note: since pictures on the Commons that illustrate communities are acceptable, even if you don't already have a specific Wikipedia use for them, why don't you just upload the ones you wouldn't otherwise use? If you can simply identify the community and the site, say an intersection or the address of a building visible in the picture, that would be enough. You could create a user category for your pictures, so that all your pictures would be counted together. Moreover, if you were willing/able to upload pictures for which you had no certain use, perhaps you could have a user subcategory — say, "Category:Billwhittaker's unsorted pictures". Since (if I understand rightly) you're willing to let me work with some of your pictures for which you have no use at the moment, having such a category could help me work with them easier: you could upload any such pictures with location information and place them in such a category, and I could take them out of that category once they were appropriately used, sorted, etc. Don't think I'm trying to tell you what to do, of course (sorry if that's how it sounds!); just trying to give helpful advice. Nyttend (talk) 05:01, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the note :-) One big benefit with identifying your pictures, even if you don't exactly remember the location, is that we have Google satellite and Mapquest aerial pictures: that's how I was able to identify the location of the Swedesburg church. One "request" for picture taking in the future: if you're at an intersection, could you perhaps try to get a street sign in the corner of the picture sometimes? As you may imagine, that makes identifying the location far easier. Nyttend (talk) 23:40, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Iowa Map

Hi there. My compliments on the nice map that you created, and have displayed within the Iowa article. Call me a stickler for details, but I was fairly surprised when I noticed that Dubuque is NOT shown on the map displaying the state's cities, when Burlington, a city less than half its size, is!?!? Perhaps you still have the file saved, and can upload an amended version. I think that would add better clarity to those not familiar with the state and the cities within it. DBQer (talk) 04:46, 29 December 2008 (UTC)

Iowa Small Town Photos

Enjoyed viewing your photos of small towns in Iowa. If you ever get a chance to stop by Stone City, Iowa plaese take a few photos and add them to WikiPedia. I created the page for Stone City but was not able to take many photos of the town. Kepper66 (talk) 14:24, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Meskwaki Settlement

Sorry about the confusion: because the link didn't go to a community with a standard-format name, I assumed that it wasn't a modern community, and because it was a redlink (you see I removed it about ten minutes before you created the article), I couldn't check the article to see otherwise. The Original Barnstar
This barnstar is issued to Billwhittaker for his meaningful contributions to the article Chronology of the War of 1812. Green Squares (talk) 14:26, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Do you plan on expanding this page? Other wise I think it should be nominated for deletion. CTJF83Talk 00:05, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

NRHP sites are of sufficient notability, to be sure, to have their own articles. On the other hand, one-sentence stubs really aren't a good idea: you really need to have several sentences in the stub. The article as you created it, in fact, probably would have qualified for speedy deletion under criterion A3. I've expanded it, so there shouldn't really be any problem now. Nyttend (talk) 17:53, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I wasn't aware of the expansion of all the historical places. The article looks better now. CTJF83Talk 21:42, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Copyright

Hi Bill,

I am seeking permission to use your photo of downtown Shell Rock, IA for that city's comprehensive land use plan. I am a public employee based in Waterloo contracted to work on this document for them. I like your photo and I think it would be great to have it in the document. I've never asked for permission of photos off wikipedia before, so I am not familiar with all these licensing agreements and various "tags." I'll stay tuned to this post for your response. Oh, let me know how you would like to be cited/credited if you grant permission and wish to be credited for your work. Thank you. -David

Hello David, You may use the photo, just put "photo by Bill Whittaker, used with permission" on it. I have a bunch more of Shell Rock, drop me a line if you want to see them.

Thanks, Bill. I'll be in contact if I need more photos. -David

Iowa Barnstar

Thanks very much: the outcome (and more importantly the hard work of folks like you) gives me faith in Wikipedia. T L Miles (talk) 16:14, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi!

Hi, I'm sysop at es: and former sysop at Commons, I use to upload some pictures from here to Commons as my daily homework, and I did it with some of your pictures, hehe. Have you though to upload your own images at Commons directly? They could be used in other Wikimedia projects as well. Cya! Kordas (sínome!) 18:08, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Easier to upload to WP

Hi Kordas- The reason I don't upload to Commons is that I work exclusively in WP and the "Upload File" button on the left sends me to the WP upload page. If I were to upload to commons, it would add about 5 steps. The vast majority of my pix are of interest to only folks in WP; for those few who want my images in Commons, they can upload them with my blessings. Bill Whittaker (talk) 15:29, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Council Bluffs and Bertrand?

I don't think the steamboat Bertrand belongs in the Council Bluffs section as the event didn't happen in the town (or even the county). It would be more appropriate in the Blair or Harrison County section. There were other steamboat accidents in the immediate vicinity or, for instance, the Steamboat Arabia exhibit in KC which was actually on it's way to Council Bluffs when it sank. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.116.177.82 (talk) 06:36, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Bertrand

I like the Steamboat Bertrand article; thanks! I'm asking both you and Doncram this question: which picture do you think is most suitable for the Bertrand Site listing at National Register of Historic Places listings in Washington County, Nebraska? I've placed the picture of the model, but I wonder if the artifacts might be better. Nyttend (talk) 15:31, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks!

Although I don't display my barnstars, I appreciate them. Thanks very much. I noticed that I can get some of the articles from the local newspaper in Davenport online, so I might add some more information that way. I'm in Connecticut, nowhere near Davenport (I think I must've driven past it once.) If you have an interest and are close enough for it to matter, I bet there are some great sources there that are not online. I quoted from the abstract of a paper delivered at something called a "law association" some years back. It would be interesting to see what details the author has in the actual paper, but my time and interest is limited. Anyway, thanks for the barnstar. -- Noroton (talk) 20:57, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Interesting pics you've taken, by the way. Have you ever taken the same shot as some old postcard from maybe a hundred years back? I've done it a couple of times here in Connecticut, and it's always interesting to see the things that have changed, the things that have stayed the same and all gradations in between. I used to upload a lot of postcards from eBay (I stuck to the ones before 1923 because the copyright is definitely expired, although apparently you can upload later ones). With the leaves still off the trees, this is a good time of year for building pictures. -- Noroton (talk) 21:03, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I reduced the size of File:Iowa rainfall.jpg, cause it was pretty big to view it all at once. I hope that's ok, if not, feel free to revert me. CTJF83Talk 02:02, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I have the urge to get Iowa up to GA status. Would you like to help out? CTJF83Talk 19:24, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure! LOL, I just know it would be great to get it up to GA status, and I didn't really wanna do all the work myself. Besides a thorough copyedit, what do you think we need to add to the page? CTJF83Talk 20:29, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Ya, it needs a major overhaul. How about a picture of Hoover, the only President from Iowa? Briefly off topic, I'm thinking about taking a day road trip, you got any ideas on what to look at roughly between Davenport and Iowa City and Dubuque to Burlington? I'm off for now till about 9ish. Let me know how you wanna proceed with fixing the article. CTJF83Talk 21:09, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
I mean I have no specific destination in mind, just wanna go driving. Anything I should see, like monuments or buildings, etc. CTJF83Talk 21:21, 1 April 2009 (UTC)
Do you think Hoover's main pic would be better? CTJF83Talk 16:53, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
No, no, this is our drive to get it to GA status, if you like the radio one, that's fine with me! CTJF83Talk 17:08, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
Hey, maybe we should start a to-do list so we can be on the same page for the edits to improve Iowa. CTJF83Talk 17:41, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
So what about this? What can we do to really get Iowa up to GA? CTJF83Talk 02:59, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Ok, I'll compare it to Minnesota and see what we can do to fix it. CTJF83Talk 17:32, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Can you look at my second post here and tell me what you think of including just those notable Iowans, and shortening the list on the Iowa page. Please post on that page too. CTJF83Talk 06:38, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I know I haven't done anything to Iowa yet, but I promise I will soon. CTJF83Talk 05:19, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

NRHP infoboxes

Thanks for the compliment: my advantage is that I know where to find them, as I can't make them any better than anyone else can. On that note — you'll find tons of NRHP data at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp, part of a website run by User:Elkman; if you click the "Create an infobox..." line, you'll be able to get a nearly-complete infobox simply by typing the listing name. However, it's not complete: the full publicly-available NRHP database was most recently updated last April, so nothing added in the last year is available; to get information for sites listed since then, you have to go to recent listings pages.

All that being said, I don't know what I can really add to your mound group infobox. Because some information is not included in the recent listings pages (or, for that matter, in the mound group's Federal Register page), you'll have to obtain it from the nomination form or somewhere else. Many of these nomination forms are online (although I think not all; I can't guarantee that the mound group is one of them), but I've never discovered where to get them. You'd probably do best to ask Doncram, who relies heavily on them and thus should be able to find it for you if it's online. Nyttend (talk) 00:53, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome; it was interesting learning about it. What do you mean, by the way, when you say "blocked out"? Nyttend (talk) 15:50, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
"Blocked out", to rough-out something complex with simple blocks (such as a crude WP page); in hindsight, I can see why that might be confuesed with "block out", to repress or intentionally ignore. Bill Whittaker (talk) 19:36, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Union Block

Nice Union Block picture and stub! Just wanted to let you know: judging by the actions of Doncram, Elkman, and others, I believe that the standard disambiguation format for NRHP properties is "NRHP-listing-name (Cityname, Statename)", not "NRHP-listing-name, Cityname, Statename". I wasn't in on the discussion that established this, so I don't know the reasons for this. Nyttend (talk) 03:47, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Your rollback request

Hello Billwhittaker, I have granted your account rollback in accordance with your request. Please remember that rollback is for reverting vandalism/spam, and that misuse of the tool, either by revert-warring with other users, or simply reverting edits you disagree with, can lead to it being removed. For practice, you may wish to see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback. Good luck. Acalamari 16:16, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Talkback

Hello, Billwhittaker. You have new messages at Ctjf83's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hey, I'd like your thoughts on this template. I just merged the county and cities from each state into one section per state, and added an attractions section. I'm thinking of removing most of the cities, since most are really small anyway, and adding a few from Illinois, namely the county seats of Henry and Mercer counties. What Do you think? I just think the list of cities is too long. CTJF83Talk 22:15, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

While I'm at it, I'm not sure we need a separate sports section. Perhaps merge it with attractions or remove it all together? CTJF83Talk 22:17, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

It would be helpful if you could confirm the photographer of the image concerned, has granted release under the licenses shown. You can do this by getting them to make a formal release, by writing to the OTRS permissions queue as detailed in WP:COPYREQ Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:24, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Freely licensed images

Thank you for uploading images/media to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view previous uploads by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'file' namespace from the drop down box (or see [1]). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading! Sfan00 IMG (talk) 14:24, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Defusing the Image issues

It seems that there have been some issues with images you uploaded, some which were moved to Commons in good faith. Do you have a list of images that you feel were wrongly deleted or moved because it may be possible to recover them, with a view to resolving the images you feel exist?

Whilst I do not yet fully understand the actions made by other editors that you mention in your message, I've been advised to offer a partial apology, in the hope that your continued participation can resolve the issues you mention (such as image crediting) in a favourable way.

Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:59, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Explanations

I'm very sorry that you're upset about this, and hope that this might help you feel better.

Perhaps you didn't properly understand the purpose of the Commons project. The idea is that, if ten different Wikipedias (in ten different languages) all want to use the same image, then they can all store it on their own servers... which means ten different copies of the file. Or it can be stored on Commons, and all the different Wikipedias use a link to Commons. Commons itself does not use the images, it stores them and makes them available for external users.

There are hundreds of different Wikipedias, and tens of thousands of images. It's much more efficient to use a central storehouse rather than multiple local copies.

Anything else you'd like me to explain or fix? DS (talk) 17:19, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Commons

Dear Sfan and DS- Thanks for the responses. I understand Commons full well, and the reasons people give for transferring files to it. What I object to is the different ways commons files are treated; especially the deletion without notification. In WP it is pro-forma that if a file is proposed for deletion the original contributor is informed and can at least have a chance at salvaging it.

This has happened a few times, mostly to images of no consequence, but the one incident that pushed me over the edge was the deletion of Giant_ground_sloth_Iowa.JPG This image was used on about 10 Wikipedia pages, including Mammals, sloth, Geology of Iowa, Iowa Museum of Natural History, and several Pleistocene pages. Wikimedia User:FunkMonk deleted it because he felt it did not have adequate copyright release. If he had bothered to inform me of this decision, it would have been a very easy thing for me to fix- I work closely with the museum that owns the model in question, and their directors were happy to see the image on line. However, I did not hear about this until after it had been deleted from every Wikipedia page. Compounding my frustration was a number of spurious copyright challenges on Wikipedia, the most annoying of which was Robert Longo Sleep 84.jpg (you can read that debate for yourself). In looking at similar images that were not so tagged, it has become clear to me that there is no consistent application of copyright. Another big problem is that any editor can nominate any image for deletion for any reason, and the burden is placed on the contributor to defend the image, and if no defense is given, the image is deleted.

While most claims of copyright problems are in good faith, I began to feel that for some claiming a copyright violation is a very effective form of vandalism. Defending an image from a copyright claim takes a lot of work, more work than it took to create and upload the image. With my frustrations mounting, I decided to get out of the game. There a several articles that I still keep tabs on and want to improve, but my days of uploading images are over. Thank you, Bill Whittaker (talk) 18:21, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm working on a number of projects simultaneously, including the restoration of that Giant Sloth thing. It used to be that images once deleted were gone for good, but now we can restore them. You know "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" ? Wikipedia has hundreds of hands - and the Wikimedia hands may not even be in the same room. We're trying (very trying) our best, and people do make mistakes. Have patience, please. DS (talk) 18:28, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for being reasonable on the images issue.

On something specific - Concerning File:Council Bluffs, Iowa, Old Town.jpg which is an image you originally uploaded here on enwiki,

I note that the verticals in the image are not vertical, presumably this is due to the way the photo was taken.

I am looking into the possibility of getting someone with appropriate skillset to look into attempting a correction, Do you still happen to have the hi-res uncompressed camera image of this picture? Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:13, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Splatter (film)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Splatter (film), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

no assertion of notability - having an IMDB profile doesn't confer any kind of inherent importance

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Archaeology help

You've worked a lot with Iowa archeology; do you know if you could help me with South Dakota? Over 15% of its listings, including virtually everything in Fall River and Harding counties, are restricted-address archaeology sites, and I'd like to create broader (perhaps by-county) articles to which many of these sites could redirect. And if you don't think you could help directly, do you know of any websites I could use and/or WP editors whom I could ask? Nyttend (talk) 13:10, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

This is outside of my geographical range, but a lot of the sites are discussed in Storied stone By Linea Sundstrom; her book can be found on Google Book. Bill Whittaker (talk) 14:49, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks!

interview..?

Hello! I am brand new to wiki, so please let me know if there is another way to contact the author of a page.

I live in Iowa City and was wondering, Billwhittaker, if I might be able to talk to you a little bit? You seem like a valuable resourse when it comes to Iowa history! I would love to exchange a few emails and then hopefully sit down and really chat with you a bit. Please let me know if you would be willing to talk with me, and the best way to contact you, or how I might pass along my info.

Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Melissa, First rule is to sign your message with four tildes (~). Welcome to Iowa City. Alas, my mother always told me not to meet with strangers on the internet, advice I'll pass on to you as well. Good sources for local history include the Johnson County Historical Society, http://www.jchsiowa.org/ and the Iowa City library of the State Historical Society. http://www.iowahistory.org/ Guidelines on how to edit Wikipedia can be found at Wikipedia:Tutorial. Good Luck! Bill Whittaker (talk) 20:56, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Line of succession

Re: this withdrawn comment. If one of your ancestors was the Electress Sophia of Hanover and none of your ancestors in that line had done anything to get them and their descendants excluded, then yes, you too would be in that list. Of course, you'll need a reference from a reliable source, and no original research! :).

The web page Persons eligible to succeed to the British Throne as of 1 Jan 2001 has what purports to be a complete list as of 1 Jan 2001. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 13:54, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Unblanking your talk page

Sorry to unsatisfy you by writing on your looseleaf paper :-) Easy problem: the coordinates are wrong. Put the right coordinates into the infobox and the dot will show in the right place. I'll fix it momentarily. Nyttend (talk) 14:03, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

You're quite welcome. Problem was a typo in the NRIS (it recorded it at 90ºW rather than 96ºW), not an error on your part. Nyttend (talk) 14:09, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

AAAS?

Are you an AAAS member? Acroterion and I are trying to expand Mummy Cave in Wyoming (yes, I know that this is far away from your Iowa specialty :-) I've found what looks to be quite a useful source here, but I don't feel like paying $15 for the article or even more for a membership that I'll never use. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 23:40, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I've downloaded and let Acroterion know about it; if he doesn't say anything in a day or two, you can take it down then. If he wants it at some later date, I can email it. Thanks so much! Nyttend (talk) 15:08, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Both of us have downloaded it; you can take it down. Again, thanks! Nyttend (talk) 16:20, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks; but you really should credit Acroterion for it more than me — I began the expansion process, but he's done most of the writing. Nyttend (talk) 16:48, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

16 to life

I have redirected your article 16 to life as it is not notable to warrant its own page at this time if you work on the article in a sandbox and add more information and more sources to back up your claim then fill free to create the article but for right know it it is not notable.--Xsonxfanx (talk) 02:16, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Xsoxfanx- I'm going to revert your redirect of 16 to Life, since it clearly meets the WP:notability requirements, ("If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article.") it is a feature film with a well-documented outside reliable reference. If you truly believe this is in error, you should go through the formal Nomintation for Deletion process to remedy the situation, and then once it is deleted, do a redirect. Thanks, Bill Whittaker (talk) 12:53, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Iowa arch.

Hi Bill! What I meant by needing to be wikified, is that there are a lot of possible wikilinks that could be added to the article, especially the links for anything to do with history, geology, arch., etc., that are relevant to the content. (For example, anything to do with historical periods or civilizations, like: "Archaic Period" should be wikilinked.) Also, instead of having inline ext. links for the universities, etc., those should be wikilinked and then add an ext. links section with the respective urls. to the bottom of the article. Relevant navboxes, i.e., for "Iowa topics" and/or "Arch. topics" would be great for the bottom of the article. Again, there are more suggestions at: WP:Featured article criteria. Hope this helps! --Funandtrvl (talk) 18:01, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Brighton, Iowa

I need to know Bill, what happened to Brighton Iowa? I use to live there, my dad died there, my aunt still lives there. How did it become such a dump? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.196.223.182 (talkcontribs) 16:16, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

I don't think it is a dump, it looks pretty average for small Iowa downtowns (see my article Rural flight for more info). It was a gloomy day when that photo was taken, I am sure it looks finer in the sunshine. If you want me to e-mail you all the ca. 25 pix I have of Brighton, leave me an e-mail address. Bill Whittaker (talk) 17:27, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

My e-mail is sara_burton2000@yahoo.com I guess your right about it being average. Most small towns do look like that. Maybe you know my aunt, Vickie Patton, maybe not. Im told she likes to makes scenes. Anyway, thanks for writing me back. Although I havent been on in over two months. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.197.121.237 (talk) 20:54, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

Just curious

How are numbers assigned for archaeological sites? I know that the first two digits represent the state, and the two letters in the middle represent the county, but what about the digit(s) that follow? Are they assigned chronologically, with the lowest numbers being those that were first assigned, or does it work some other way? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 18:57, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation. While looking at information on some Ohio sites yesterday, I observed that one recently-discovered site had the highest number of all the National Register-listed sites in the county, and that made me begin to wonder. Nyttend (talk) 22:30, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Smithsonian Trinomals again

What happens if a site is registered in one county and turns out to be in another — is the designation changed? A large number of sites were just added to the Register in Carbon and Duchesne counties in Utah, but one of the sites listed in Carbon County is "42Dc706" — I'm not sure whether the archaeologists initially thought this was in Duchesne County and discovered that it was in Carbon County after it was too late, or if the Register should have listed it in Duchesne County. Nyttend (talk) 14:20, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Just so you are aware someone's tagged the image I helped rescue for you as non-free, which means some trigger happy admin will delete it unless there is a rationale or OTRS from the museum concerned.

William Pidgeon

Hi, Bill. I understand the naming conventions, but there are a few problems with what you did yesterday. First, your creation of William Edwin Pidgeon was a cut-and-paste move. I recommend that you read WP:CUTPASTE and WP:CWW, but to summarize, cut-and-paste moves are not a good idea because the article's revision history doesn't go along with the content. The result is incomplete attribution, which is a copyright problem. What you should have done instead is use the move button to move the content of William Pidgeon to William Edwin Pidgeon along with its page history. The other problem is the disambiguation page you want to create. WP:DAB says, "If there are three or more topics associated with the same term, then a disambiguation page should normally be created for that term.... If only a primary topic and one other topic require disambiguation, then disambiguation links are sufficient, and a disambiguation page is unnecessary. However if there are two topics for a term but neither is considered the primary topic, then a disambiguation page is used." There are only two topics associated with the term "William Pidgeon," and the Australian painter seems like the primary topic, so I see no need for a disambiguation page. The hatnote I added should suffice, unless you don't think there's a primary topic.

So with all that in mind, what do you want to do from here on out? Let's keep the discussion on your talk page, if you don't mind. Thanks, A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 22:54, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Conflicted licensing on image File:Pele San Diego.jpg

The above noted image or media file appears to have conflicted licensing. As an image cannot be both 'free' and 'unfree', a check of the exact status of this media/image concerned is advised.Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:17, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Despite what the warning tag states, images can have two CR issues- the object that is depicted (in this case a sculpture) and the image itself (in this case a photo I took). A rationale was made for the use of the Pele sculpture, addressing the first issue, and I gave permission for the photo, addressing the second issue. Bill Whittaker 18:27, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Calvin Beale photos

Thanks, but I was already familiar with these USDA photos; as you can see if you check Commons:Category:Calvin Beale, I've already uploaded dozens of photos from this collection, including the images for Franklin, Mitchell, and Worth counties. Between my work and the work of others, all NRHP-listed courthouse pictures have been uploaded and used here for all states except New York, Virginia, Illinois, Missouri, and Oregon. Still: thanks for making sure that I was aware of this site! Nyttend (talk) 21:17, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

File:Pele San Diego.jpg listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, File:Pele San Diego.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Files for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 22:43, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

  • Seems like a capricious deletion. By far the best image of Pele (deity) in the article. A fair use rationale is provided in the image file. None of the other images are discussed in the article either, so that should not be an issue. Bill Whittaker (talk) 15:57, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

And finally, some good news ...

This image thanks to the permission you forwarded is reinstated, and on Wikimedia Commons for use by many projects, not just English Wikipedia.

I am currently considering trying to get Rusty on the Main Page at Commons, any encouragement you can give to Commons to do this, much welcomed :)

Sfan00 IMG (talk) 23:22, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey Bill; I'm a local admin here. Now that the image of Rusty the sloth has been tagged with an OTRS ticket proving that someone knowledgeable about copyright has been in touch with you and cleared the image for free use, it should be safe from deletion at commons. If someone tries to mess with it feel free to contact me or put {{adminhelp}} on this page, and we will see about hosting or discussing it locally. Regards,  Skomorokh  14:36, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Archaeological site categories?

As far as I can see, there are no categories for archaeological sites by period. I'm finding that it might be helpful to have categories for Archaic sites, Woodland sites, etc., but I can't find any. Do you think that it would be a good idea to create categories like this? I don't really know what I'm doing, so I don't want to start without getting input from someone who knows better than I do. I would have posted this question at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Archaeology, but that page appears to be largely inactive. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 01:41, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

That'd be a great idea! Great, meaning, great for someone other than me to do :). Eastern North America universally uses the Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, Late Prehistoric, Historic sequence, which is subdivided into local variations and phases. Let me poke around a little bit and see if that's a good way to do it, maybe I'll use the few Iowa sites as a test. Bill Whittaker (talk) 14:18, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! Heironymous Rowe pointed me to your suggestions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Archaeology, where I've replied. Please check back there for questions from me: I'm willing to work on this :-) but not without input to make sure that I'm going the correct way. Nyttend (talk) 20:34, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I am 100% for renaming James Allen (Mormon Battalion) to James Allen (US Army) or however you want to do the punctution and such. File:Peterson iowa blockhouse.jpg

Nice photo; I'm surprised that such a structure has survived for 150 years. Nyttend (talk) 01:14, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Long story, that one. It was removed from Peterson in the 19th c. and converted to a stable on a farm, where it was overtaken by a barn. When the barn was demolished, they found the bottom storey of the blockhouse still intact. It was disassembled and put back in downtown Peterson, the second story was added and a new roof put on. Not in exactly the right spot, but reasonably close.Bill Whittaker (talk) 12:49, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 19:01, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Nice work improving St. Mary's Church and Rectory (Iowa City, Iowa)! Bill Whittaker (talk) 15:09, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Bill, I enjoyed doing it. I enjoyed my time in Iowa City in the early 90s. I believe you have taken pictures of other IC landmarks, if so and you're able/interested, could you take a picture of the old St. Mary's Rectory? I just posted that page this morning, and would like to get a photo for it. The address is on the page. I remember seeing it, it's a rather non-descript looking place as I recall. I'm not sure what kind of shape its in now. I was in Iowa the last couple weeks and was able to take some picture in the Quad City area, but I didn't make it to Iowa City. If your not interested, its not a problem, I've written other pages for Catholic Churches near Iowa City and I might make it back there in the not too distant future to take pictures of them.Farragutful (talk) 20:14, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you for the photo of the old rectory. I really appreciate it. The place looks much better than I remember it. Farragutful (talk) 22:36, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

The original church was on the same site as the current church, which was built around the old one and then torn down when the new church was under roof. From what I understand they continued to use the old church until it was torn down. There used to be a photo of the old church either in the parish hall (basement of the church) or in the offices. I know its in the parish history published in 1993. The old rectory was roughly on the same location as the present rectory. It could have been closer to the street, etc. It was moved to its current location before construction of the present house. Fr. Mazzuchelli bought two lots around 1840 and they are the lot the church is on and the lot the rectory is on. Msgr. Schulte bought the lots for the convent and school, which are up the street where the Newman Center currently sits. Farragutful (talk) 19:25, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

William Desmond Taylor (Directorial Career)

Regarding your changes to the William Desmond Taylor page, I find no evidence that Taylor directed the first 7 films you listed, nor that he worked for the American Film Mfg. Co. prior to 1915. (The IMDB is not a reliable source, and anyone can add information there.) I researched Taylor's film career extensively for the book William Desmond Taylor: A Dossier, and found no indication of Taylor's involvement with those films. He was working elsewhere when those films were made. Do you have a solid source for that information other than the error-ridden IMDB?

Also, you wrote: "Taylor directed more than 60 feature films, notable films include..." But only the last two films on your list could be considered features, the others on the list are only one-reel short films, not feature films. Of the films on your list, only Diamond from the Sky might be considered notable. How was it decided that those other films on the list were "notable"? The films of Taylor's which were indeed notable (Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Anne of Green Gables, The Soul of Youth) were not mentioned. Pikabruce (talk) 12:01, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Okey-doke. Go ahead and correct. I just felt that there should be a list of Taylor's greatest hits; it sounds like you are the perfect person for the job. Thanks, Bill Whittaker (talk) 13:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Dudley

Basically what you've done is turn it into a set index article. I personally don't think this the best idea, since we can surely pull up more coverage for either or both of these communities; however, it's definitely within the set index guidelines, so I have no reason to complain. If you'd like to expand both of them, you could just turn it into a disambiguation page along the lines of Oakwood, Ohio.

You've not seen me around much because I cut most of Iowa from my watchlist. I've begun grad school, and I didn't desire either to spend too much time on Wikipedia or to have things on my watchlist that I didn't really watch. One plus is that I now have JSTOR access; I'll not need to request your help with sources such as the one you helped provide for Mummy Cave. And interestingly enough, down the hall from me is an archaeologist, although he's working with the "Terminal Classic" period of Mayan history. Nyttend (talk) 16:56, 2 September 2010 (UTC)

Terminology

As far as you're aware, is there any special term for an archaeologist who specialises in petroglyphs? I'm working on an article about James L. Swauger, one of the most prominent scholars in Ohio River Valley petroglyphy, and I don't know whether "archaeologist" or some other term would be the best way to describe him.
