Nine Inch Nails at FLC (again)

Thanks so much for your comments on the previous FLC for the Nine Inch Nails discography. Unfortunately the FLC failed since I just didn't have enough time to address the issues raised, but I have since had a bit more free time, and have addressed the problems and have resubmitted the article for Featured List status. Featured List of the Day Experiment

There have been a series of proposals to initiate a Featured List of the Day on the main page. Numerous proposals have been put forth. After the third one failed, I audited all WP:FL's in order to begin an experiment in my own user space that will hopefully get it going. Today, it commences at WP:LOTD. Afterwards I created my experimental page, a new proposal was set forth to do a featured list that is strikingly similar to my own which is to do a user page experimental featured list, but no format has been confirmed and mechanism set in place. I continue to be willing to do the experiment myself and with this posting it commences. Please submit any list that you would like to have considered for list of the day in the month of January 2008 by the end of this month to WP:LOTD and its subpages. Is it just me, or was the review and subsequent fail of Joy Division when it was on hold for about a day or two odd? Please tell me what you think. I've gone through most of the sources available right now on Siamese Dream. Next I'm going through the DeRogatis book and the Siamese Dream tab book, where Billy Corgan gives all that detailed information about the songs (by the way, I think we could make a "Cherub Rock" FA article, if you want to). When you have the time to work on it during Thanksgiving I think you might also want to try and find more contemporary reviews. After the DeRogatis Chicago Tribune one I'm not sure what else I can find; the Rolling Stone one doesn't have an author or original publication date listed, and the Allmusic one looks like it was written well after the album was released. A bit of a snag: The Siamese Dream tab book no longer can be previewed on Amazon.com, and Google Book Search doesn't provide one. Unfortunately the book is out of print and I lost my copy a few years back. You could buy a copy from Amazon's used section, but the starting price there is 37 dollars. I also don't see it on eBay. Future projects

My goal is to have Joy Division, Loveless (album), and R.E.M. (band) reach FA status by the end of the year. Once those are done, I hope to get more focused than I have been in recent months. While I always help with the COTW, compared to the people I regularly work with (editors like you, CloudNine, and Ceoil), I haven't been yielding too many GAs/FAs. I definitely plan to work on Britpop next, but is there anything else you might want to work on together? I'm thinking another album article, because those seem to be the easiest to reference and write. There's still In Utero, after all, but there's also Ten, and others that would be worth working on, and quite a few I'm interested in but not sure if you are. Let me know if anything strikes you. Working on stuff like Siamese Dream highlights problems I try to avoid; while I'm totally interested in working on the album, we've both found our resources restricted. I want to make sure we have enough information about recording information, sales figures, and the music itself, in addition to plentiful reviews. I've mulled over what I have available and here's some ones I feel sufficient resources are available for and that I am interested enough to work on for a few months (Note: I've left out Beatles and Zeppelin albums, as well as Nevermind, because the sheer amount of material available means I'd spend months reading first before real work would get done. I still want to finish Nevermind, but there's too much to process first, if you know what I mean):

The point of the quotes in the newsletter is to include something completely ridiculous in the spirit of fun (and hopefully to get people to pay attention). Thus I try to top myself every month. I was working on the newsletter a day before it was sent out and I was at a loss as to what it should be this month. Then I went into my Spin: 20 Years of Alternative Music book and found this e-mail interview with Thom Yorke, which was a godsend. By the way, congratulations on making the backlog template at GAC with Slay Tracks. Maybe that'll result in some unsuspecting editor discovering Pavement. WesleyDodds 02:53, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

I think we should both pitch in on this article, if a lot of the suicide dispute hub-bub is going to be moved there. The msot important thing the article needs is to actually describe Cobain's death, the discovery of his body, and the reactions to it before going into the whole debate. Hey my man. Is there a reason Zero is omitted from the "singles" section in the discography?—Well, other than oversight. I was going to just go ahead and add it, but I don't really have time right now, so I figured I'd run it by you first to make sure. Seems like a rather large oversight if that's the case. The coment you made of the number inconsistancy I did not fix though, on my previous featured article for Godsmack we reached the concensus that numbers up to ten should be written and anything over can be in # form. RIAA certifications such as 2x platinum are an exception for the rule however. I would really appreciate if you would put music samples in the article. If you do please do this:
  • "Man in the Box" in the "Facelift and Sap" section
  • "Would?" in the "Dirt and Jar of Flies" section
  • "Again" in the "Alice in Chains and decline" section
  • "Nutshell" in the "Alice in Chains and decline" section in the Unplugged paragraph
Also if you wouldn't mind (you don't have to) maby put samples in two other articles for me? Keep in mind you don't have to. And I myself cannot get a picture of Staley, but I am trying to see if someone else will. If you want I can give you the URL for the image, and you could get it (again you don't have to). I can't stress how much of a help you are. On your userpage I saw the articles you contribute to, which ones are you the main author for? My first and currently only FA is Godsmack, I must have gotten off pretty easy on that one, AiC is much more of a challenge than Godsmack, but I have to keep in mind they have twice the history. Would Chevelle be too short for FA status? They have a short history, but if possible I would like to skip GA and go to FA. When I saw them play at The Fillmore in July that's exactly how it was performed, right down to the keyboard noodling at the beginning. If you like Different Class, you will mostly likely also dig His 'n Hers, the album before it. Both records are very much in the same vein. Despite the importance of Zen Arcade, I feel New Day Rising is a much better album, and is possibly one of the top ten greatest alt-rock albums ever. But that's me . . . Miscellanea

I was wondering for a while why the review for Mellon Collie wasn't on the Rolling Stone website. Then last night I realized Jim DeRogatis' review for the album in his book was from his tenure at Rolling Stone, and given what he said about that period in the "Hootiegate" chapter its absence makes sense now. That article's almost GA ready and I've been doing more work on In Utero lately. Music Sample Help?

Hi, my name is Dark Executioner, and I was referred to you by Burningclean for help with music samples. I have no clue on how to put them onto Wikipedia at all. You see, I have been working hard to help get Six Feet Under (a seminal death-metal band) up to GA. I have put tons of references, cleaned the article up, and even broke their history down into descriptive subsections.

Sounds like a plan. Letting you know right now that Exit Music has about eighty pages dedicated to OK Computer, and since I'm not too into Radiohead in the first place, it's going to be a bit of a slog for me. OK Computer was initially planned as an upbeat reaction to The Bends and defiant demolition of Radiohead's gloomy image. But as recording progressed, its trip-hop symphonies and sci-fi lullabies brimmed over with nausea, disgust and travel sickness: "The crackle of pig skin, the yuppies networking/The vomit, the vomit." Pigs, crashing vehicles and millennial despair became recurring motifs. "To me the album's more about speed and transport rather than the future and technology," says Jonny Greenwood. "The songs are very transparent, it's very clear what they're about."
Yorke tried to make his voice sound different on every track. "He was getting very sick of the fact that he could sing about garden furniture and it would still sound very passionate," says Greenwood. Dark references to "the IMF and cattle prods" also reflected the singer's growing interest in "voodoo economics" and digestion of political tracts like Will Hutton's The State We're In and Eric Hobsbawm's The Age Of Extremes.
The track 'Fitter, Happier' was voiced by computer speech software and ended with the brutal comment on modern consumerism: "a pig in a cage on antibiotics" - a line adapted from Jonathan Coe's darkly comic novel about arms dealing and the death of the welfare state, What A Carve Up! This extraordinary slice of digital nihilism was even considered as the lead-off single for OK Computer.
Instead, the towering six-and-a-half minute epic 'Paranoid Android' was chosen with an animated video by Magnus Carlsson featuring murder, mutilation and topless mermaids. MTV censored the mermaids. Eleven minutes long in its original form, this neo-prog mammoth was hailed as a 'Bohemian Rhapsody' for the '90s. Jonny began to despise it. "I just couldn't stand it after the second time," he recalls. "If I was working in a shop or a factory, I'd go out for a cigarette break."
Colin Greenwood says "the idea behind 'Paranoid Android' was trying to do a combination of DJ Shadow and The Beatles. We've always aimed ourselves at this trajectory towards other people's music that we've fallen in love with. It's like lover's flattery, we try to emulate these people and we always fall short. When we did 'Creep' we were heavily into Scott Walker. We aim for the stars, and we hit just north of Oxford, ha!" (Dalton, Steven. "Radiohead and Whose Army". OK Computer audio samples

Any more thoughts on this? I'm still a bit concerned about the placement of the samples within the article, and the weakness of the fair use rationales. The fair use rationales talk about illustrating the "widely successful" Karma Police and "final single" No Surprises, which would suggest that the samples should go in the "Reception" and "Release" sections respectively instead. If we're wanting to illustrate the new, unusual musical styles on the album, then it might be good to put in something like Paranoid Android or Fitter Happier. Alternatively, we could just rewrite the fair use rationales to explain which specific points about the "Musical style and theme" section the samples are illustrating. DSotM Legacy

I've been searching a lot this morning on the internet for reliable sources of musicians talking about the influence DSotM had on them. So far I haven't come up with much; Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree, and a list of groups Pink Floyd supposedly influenced, from about.com (David Bowie, Genesis, The Nazz, Queen, Phish, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Yes). I've been searching relentlessly to see if any of those groups from that list (which aren't already mentioned in the article) ever talked about Dark Side of the Moon specifically, but to no avail. Also, I've been trying to find if any of Pink Floyd's contemporaries said anything about the album (Yes, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, etc.), and have come up with nothing. I would double-check some of your books for this kind of info but at this point I'm thinking that, while I'm sure that some of those bands talked about DSotM at some point, the information is inaccessible. Oh, and evidently Roger Waters doesn't think much of Radiohead, or OK Computer. --Brandt Luke Zorn (talk) 20:39, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
I encountered the same problems, the comparison of OK Computer to DSotM is from a single author in the Reising book. I'm positive there are any number of music critics who would compare albums favourably to DSotM, but as for musicians - most of them I imagine would be too proud to admit it.
