Formal Mediation for Sports Logos

As a contributor to Wikipedia_talk:Non-free_content/RFC_on_use_of_sports_team_logos, you have been included in a request for formal mediation regarding the subject at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Use of Sports Logos. With your input and agreement to work through mediation, it is hoped we can achieve a lasting solution. --Hammersoft (talk) 13:39, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK template

You won't have errors like this if you use the DYK nomination template (there are instructions at T:TDYK#Sample DYK suggestion strings and also in the documentation for Template:NewDYKnomination) rather than just copy-and-pasting an older nomination. Ok, since you aren't interested in discussing this with me, I have raised the issue at WP:ANI#User:Bobak's block messages. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 23:59, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK image

Do you have any other images of the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in your collection? I have nominated the new article for DYK using one of your pictures. I'm thinking about a picture with less trees and more fish, even if that means some of the fish is missing. I've found some cool pictures of just the mouth and head on the internet [1] [2]. This angle [3] is pretty nice! This roadside attraction needs to make the main page! I've only been through Hayward once and the big fish is UNFORGETTABLE! Royalbroil 05:15, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

I'll try it with the picture that you have uploaded. I thought I'd give it a try. Cheers! Royalbroil 03:38, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

5 years

5 year blocks are reserved for open proxies. Other IPs should not be blocked for longer than 12 months. I'd strongly urge you to dial it back to a year. –xenotalk 20:00, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Is reblocking every year really that much of a bother? ( I realize that's most often what occurs ) 1 year is our usual ceiling for these things. –xenotalk 20:02, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
My hope is that in the brief period of time before the annual block is re-applied, there might be a few students who catch the constructive-contributor bug. But a 2 year soft-block with account creation enabled would be OK, I guess - I still think a year without is appropriate (as leaving account creation enabled just gives us a steady stream of VOAs to block). See this recent AN thread to get a gut-check of consensus on this for a very similar situation where I changed a length from 3 years to 1. –xenotalk 20:11, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
(re your comment while I was composing the above) Thank you. –xenotalk 20:13, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Just wanted to let you know out of courtesy that I've nominated your panorama as a Featured Picture Candidate. You're welcome to express your own opinion at the nomination. Good shot. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 12:04, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

NFL Draft articles

IP 96.254.146.122 is being extremely disruptive on several NFL Draft articles. Since he is switching team names around it is extremely difficult to spot without carefully going through the diffs or happening to spot an error. Can you please protect the articles and/or block the IP? Strikehold (talk) 20:00, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't personally care whether it's called a Light or a Lighthouse. fWIW, I believe you stepped in to a long standing controversy, and I believe that there had been a prior consensus that is to the contrary. In any event, the list of lighthouses in the United States should be updated to reflect the change. 7&6=thirteen (talk) 11:54, 15 July 2009 (UTC) Stan

Yes, there was a little bit --often to my surprise after I looked up the images on Commons to see what cat they'd fit into. I also went ahead and placed a few of yours that hadn't been placed on en.wikipedia yet (e.g. the Wausau fairground photo). Museum, house, jail?

Hi, noticed your adding pics to several NRHP list-articles and joining up at wp:NRHP. Welcome!, from a fellow member. Nice pic of the National Register of Historic Places listings in Michigan#Luce County one. It doesn't look like a jail to me, but I suppose you know. :) Feel free to post notice of your new articles or pictures in the corresponding announcement boxes at wp:NRHP, and to comment or ask any questions at wt:NRHP. Glad you're on board. doncram (talk) 17:54, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, welcome to the project! We always need more good photos and photographers. Nyttend (talk) 19:59, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I have a lot more to come from central CA. As for the image: yes, it is a jail --but its a combined jail/sheriff's house. In fact, if you open up the full file size and zoom in on the plaque to the left of the door you'll be able to make out "Jail & Sheriff's Residence". I saw something similar in Cheboygan, MI (see here) and its much more obvious in that structure that it was both. --Bobak (talk) 20:58, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
More on the image: if you look at the sat photo (here at corner of Court and Harrie), you can see the small, boxy jail at the back of the house. --Bobak (talk) 21:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Good to see all the pictures of all the NRHP-listed properties — and the Hanna photo was quite impressive! I can't imagine living out there; my apologies if you think otherwise :-) Nyttend (talk) 19:51, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I don't live out there. I do a lot of aerial spotting when I fly on commercial flights; it took me an hour of looking around Google Maps to figure out I had a photo Medicine Bow (I knew it was somewhere in the WY/CO/MT/UT area... that's a lot of area to scan!), after that I was able to quickly figure out the next photo I took was Hanna. Maps and aerial images have always been a favorite of mine. --Bobak (talk) 20:58, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Today I was asked to create a wikipedia account and help edit a bio. You blocked me from editing and made accusations that are simply not true. I work with SU Athletics and did not realize the rules of Wikipedia and was merely trying to help the department (who owns the CP material). I began learning tonight and came accross Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers. This is exactly what you did to me. While I will be more careful next time I would hope you would respect the fact that I was new and did not realize what you were accusing us of. Jhrubin (talk) 00:47, 31 July 2009 (UTC)jhrubin

WP:Hornbook -- a new WP:Law task force for the J.D. curriculum

Hi Bobak/June 2009 - December 2009,

I'm asking Wikipedians who are interested in United States legal articles to take a look at WP:Hornbook, the new "JD curriculum task force".

Our mission is to assimilate into Wikipedia all the insights of an American law school education, by reducing hornbooks to footnotes.

  • Over the course of a semester, each subpage will shift its focus to track the unfolding curriculum(s) for classes using that casebook around the country.
  • It will also feature an extensive, hyperlinked "index" or "outline" to that casebook, pointing to pages, headers, or {{anchors}} in Wikipedia (example).
  • Individual law schools can freely adapt our casebook outlines to the idiosyncratic curriculum devised by each individual professor.
  • I'm encouraging law students around the country to create local chapters of the club I'm starting at my own law school, "Student WP:Hornbook Editors". Using WP:Hornbook as our headquarters, we're hoping to create a study group so inclusive that nobody will dare not join.

What you can do now:

1. Add WP:Hornbook to your watchlist, {{User Hornbook}} to your userpage, and ~~~~ to Wikipedia:Hornbook/participants.
2. If you're a law student,
(You don't have to start the club, or even be involved in it; just help direct me to someone who might.)
3. Introduce yourself to me. Law editors on Wikipedia are a scarce commodity. Do knock on my talk page if there's an article you'd like help on.

Hi Bobak, since you are the main USC guy on Wikipedia I know that is active in all things USC, I wanted you to take a look at the recent edits of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football rivalries page. Someone from an unregistered IP address keeps reverting the language from "USC" to "Southern California", claiming that USC is never used (however he/she is leaving "USC" in the paragraph in multiple places and only reverting my edits). Moreover, his/her edits are disrupting the reference tags, as he/she is changing the reference names on the tags as if it were regular copy. It is clear this person does not know to properly edit and does not know any of the etiquette of Wikipedia. I would keep posting notices on his/her talk page but it seems pointless. What can be done to stop his/her disruptive editing? Regards. Tedmoseby (talk) 22:38, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I looked over the situation and completely agree with you. I'm confused as to the motivation of the other party. Interestingly enough, of all the variations, its "Southern Cal" that's considered undesired by the university (I think they got tired of being confused as Cal's southern campus, which was actually what UCLA started as). I've made an edit and a comment that I hope clarifies the situation. If it continues I will add a warning and probably semi-protect the page. --Bobak (talk) 00:21, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for looking at this Bobak! - Tedmoseby (talk) 03:20, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Looks like this person is continuing to revert edits. Tedmoseby (talk) 16:27, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
This person is at it again, calling your edits vandalism. Regards. Tedmoseby (talk) 22:21, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

DYK nomination of Confidence Hall

Hello! Your submission of Confidence Hall at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. USC Quarterbacks

Thanks for the praise regarding the USC quarterbacks. I used the media guides from 1984 to the present (except for the couple I don't have) for the starting lineups from game to game. For earlier years, I used the media guides as well but have to rely on the biographies of the returning players. I'll be going through the 'LA Times' archives at some point in the near future and will find more information for that page (and plenty of information for other pages). Air photo

I don't understand. There are two pictures. One that is clear, one that is foggy. And you say that the clear photo was when the air was bad? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BeijingSmogComparison-Aug2005a.gif --Jay(Talk) 20:51, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry about the delay, I was out of the country for a few weeks. In response to your question here, the "foggy" photo was a sunny day (no natural clouds) with smog; the clear photo with high cloud cover (blocking the sun) was after a rain. --Bobak (talk) 05:52, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I would think that after a rain shower the air would be fresh and clean. And this wasn't the case? I find this to be quite fascinating. --Jay(Talk) 16:56, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
Just to be clear, the one on the left was after rain showers (and is thus cleaner), and the one on the right was on the sunny but polluted day. --Bobak (talk) 20:54, 9 September 2009 (UTC)
No worries. My confusion stems from the way you described it. You used the terms first visit and second visit, so when you later said that the second photo was on the day the air was poor, I assumed you meant second visit, which you described as the rainy day. See where I am coming from? --Jay(Talk) 16:11, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Indefinite semi-protection for Notre Dame Fighting Irish football rivalries?

Just curious why you have indef'd semi-protection for Notre Dame Fighting Irish football rivalries. The article hasn't been edited very much in the past few months. You appear to have a content dispute with the anonymous editor who has repeatedly edited the article so if protection is appropriate you shouldn't be the one to apply it. The anonymous editor's edits don't appear to be blatant vandalism to me but a content dispute. Further, it seems that you have only edited his or her Talk page once with a vandalism template and you haven't edited the article's Talk page at all. Finally, even if the editor is vandalizing the article it seem that the better course of action would be to block him or her, not to indefinitely semi-protect the article.

Am I missing something? I can't quite understand your actions. --ElKevbo (talk) 19:27, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

I will let Bobak himself address the appropriateness of his actions, but I can agree with him that the IP is clearly wrong in this case. I don't know if I would qualify it as vandalism or not, but "Southern Cal" is not an appropriate or accepted usage for the name of the school or its teams. It is called either Southern California in full or USC for short. Strikehold (talk) 19:50, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry about that, I actually only meant a week of semi-protect because of a problematic anon that's been going after the article because, as his edit history shows, he's all about USC only being South Carolina, which has created problems with this article whenever he reappears every few weeks. I finally had to give him a 24 hour block, though I don't necessarily expect him to realize it given his edit history. --Bobak (talk) 20:35, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

User: 68.108.141.244

Hi there. I was on this user's page when I noticed this warning. It does seem that this person probably isn't acting in good faith. However, the phrase "I will crush you" could come off as a personal attack. Even if it wasn't intended, please remember that making such statements could anger vandals, provoking them to vandalize further and making them less likely to reform and contribute positively. tktktk 21:25, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

A spambot? Once it becomes self aware, we'll be all that stops them from turning into SkyNet, or at the very least a very ill-tempered Microsoft app. Thems be teh internets. --Bobak (talk) 21:49, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean... just because the user posted a spam message doesn't mean they weren't "self-aware". Apologies if adding a "last warning" after an "only warning" wasn't the right course of action; but it seemed harsh to issue an "only warning" after just one recent spam edit, particularly with the "I will crush you" added to it. WP:SPAM says that "if an editor spams numerous articles in a systematic fashion" they can get an "only warning", but that certainly was not the case here. I just want to be sure that users are treated appropriately, vandals included. tktktk 22:25, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

USC vs. Cal, 10/3

SC scores again

Are you going to the game? --BrokenSphereMsg me 01:54, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi there! Unfortunately, no. I was at the Ohio State and Washington games (and have some good photos from each I need to upload), but this time (due to some work that needs to get done) I'm watching from a sports bar here in Minneapolis. The sad thing is I have a friend who offered me a ticket, its now going to his wife. Are you going? --Bobak (talk) 07:20, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Yes, as I am a Cal season ticket holder, so I can sympathize with your pain at the loss to UW. Sort of, I think...still stewing over the thrashing from Oregon a little, but I'm looking forward to Saturday. I was hoping that you would have your camera with you, but I will do my best! --BrokenSphereMsg me 03:56, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Congrats on the win! Reminds me of the 1999 season during the Holmoe era when Cal football was fighting to be the doormat of the Pac-10. Here's Damian Williams after he got that PR for a TD, right underneath where I was sitting in the north end zone, of all places. BrokenSphereMsg me 19:44, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Weedpatch Camp

Thank you for adding the pictures of Weedpatch Camp to the article. I got the idea for creating the article after reading two books about the Dust Bowl to my students. One book mentioned Weedpatch Camp (no, it wasn't "The Grapes of Wrath"). I asked the NPS to send me a copy of the nomination. When creating the article, I found a lot of historic photos at the Library of Congress website, but I don't know how to download them. Einbierbitte (talk) 00:25, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Spirit of Troy?

You told me to stop vandalizing wikipedia and that article or i'll be blocked, in april 2008. When did I ever vandalize that article? 69.136.246.3 (talk) 02:35, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks! The large houses are all pretty spread out, and so many were nice that I opted to put a few examples together. The sun was also being uncooperative, so it limited the angle I could use. --Bobak (talk) 01:29, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Another great photo! The huge logs make it clear that the building is a sawmill in a way that nothing else really could. Nyttend (talk) 16:19, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
I've now finally uploaded the 100+ photos I took on that epic August day where I visited NRHPs in 4 counties, several universities and still had time to take photos at Vikings practice. Now I've got to catch up with the trips in between then and now, and maybe do another road trip to a nearby county. --Bobak (talk) 16:45, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Request for Notre Dame Football semi-protection

Hi Bobak, as you are probably aware, there will most likely be a coaching change at Notre Dame in the next few days. I am requesting that you semi-protect the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football page for the next couple of weeks. We are already getting edits from anonymous users trying to vandalize or jump ahead and edit for Weis being fired. I am asking you since you have been very helpful and cordial in the past. Any amount of protection you can provide is appreciated! Tedmoseby (talk) 17:47, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Caught me in the middle of move, hopefully things aren't out of control. I'll take a look. --Bobak (talk) 00:45, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Bobak, I fully agree that the plot section for Up in the Air (film) is severely lacking. However, I thought it would be odd for me to flag it myself. Although I know the broad outlines of the plot, I do not know the details of the plot sufficiently to write a coherent plot section. The film is in limited release in 175 cities this weekend. I will not be able to see the film until it is in wide release on December 23, 2009. I will attempt to expand the plot section as soon as practical after seeing the film. If you wish to expand the plot section, please do so. --Dan Dassow (talk) 19:33, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

A note

Bobak, I just wanted to congratulate you for the impressive work on the Todd Marinovich entry. I came upon it at random knowing nothing about the man and with little interest in football, but it was so well-written that I read the whole of it. Thanks for your effort!
