Regarding Houston ISD and "Houston public education"

The reason why I had some schools in both categories is because Houston ISD does not cover all of the city of Houston. Many areas of Houston are in other school districts. WhisperToMe 23:42, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

I can understand that some of the schools in the city of Houston are other school districts. As far as I know, the only schools that I removed from Category:Houston public education were ones that legitimately were also a member of Category:Houston Independent School District. Schools that are in HISD are implicitly a member of HPE because of the subcategoriziation structure. Since HISD contains nearly 300 schools in total (even though articles for all of them do not yet exist today), it is desirable to keep them in only HISD if they are indeed a HISD school, rather than cluttering both the HISD and HPE categories simultaneously. Indeed, creating subcategories for each of the other school districts might be desirable in the future, but I do not think it is necessary yet. -- Bovineone 06:07, 16 October 2005 (UTC)

Simon Wessely

I had already linkified all those items, but anon user:84.9.60.246 undid it when he (once again) performed a paragraph-by-paragraph reversion to a strongly POV version which I have repeatedly toned down. There are there users with no edit history outside of this article who are intent on making it a hatchet job against the subject; one of them is User:The One Click Group, which is a phrase which appears in the text (it's a sufferers' group). The three have an agenda against Wessely and are systematically undoing any change which presents him in anything less than unflattering terms. - Just zis  Guy, you know? ^[T]/_[C] (W) AfD? 08:25, 15 November 2005 (UTC)

• Much of that article seems to be written in a strangely non-encyclopaedic style. It reads like it was copied verbatim from some webpage, especially since there are so few wiki-links. Note about Template:main usage in Periodic table#History

I see you added a note in the Periodic table#History source to "Please be mindful of the talk page discussions that have determined Template:Main's appearance." What part of that discussion (somewhere in Template talk:Main I assume?) did you have in mind? Did you have some concern of particular relevance to Periodic table, or was this a general warning to unwary (unwary of...?) editors? DMacks 02:56, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

the Colonel's military title

Bruce Hampton is his family's first male descendant, in a very long line of distinguished militay titans, to NOT join the service. That must have taken a lot of guts, and he must have faced tremendous pressure, because he essentially broke with tradition and ended the esteemed family's proud heritage. When Bruce was called in to interview with the selective service, in 1967 or 1968, I forget exactly, he arrived wearing one of the family patriarchs' decorated uniforms, complete with marine style crew cut. But Bruce had the barber carve a big capitol H in the center of the back of his head. He spent the entire interview discussing military history and strategies, successful and otherwise. Like each of the other members of the Grease band, Bruce was not called up for service, even though he insisted he had a family obligation to honor. This may have been Bruce's very first performance art piece. How do I know? I grew up with these guys. My childhood friend, Wayne Phillips, older brothers were original bass and guitar players in the Grease band, and they used to practice in Charlie and Glenn Phillips parents house. That big H made quite an impression. Bruce also went through another incarnation as, briefly, Hampton B. Coles, Ret.

mr roboto

ok, but what argument do you use to back up this claim? do you even know who kraftwerk are? have you even seen thx1138 or sleeper? the mr roboto aesthetic and concept (not to mention the concepts in the rock opera) are clearly taken from my references. ok, so i don't have the time or the energy to write this into the main "mr roboto" document (not now, at least); but for now i give the "see also" links. why do you just delete before even figuring stuff out for yourself? why this sort of automatic logic which seems to go like:

1. .-to me, these links don't seem to have an obvious relevance to the article
2. .-tell user i'm deleting
3. .-delete

what ever happened to:

3. .-try to ask around and figure the relevance out for myself (since i don't know everything about everything)

Actually I did give you time to respond and correct it. You added the links on 2006-05-16. I notified you on 2006-05-16 on your talk page but you never responded. So after waiting 8 days, on 2006-05-24 I removed the unexplained links and mentioned the reason in the edit summary. I might also point out that none of the 5 links you added have a corresponding back-link to Mr. Roboto, so it is reasonable for there to have been suspicion regarding their relevance. If the links have a valid connection that is not self-evident to me, then they are likely not evident to another casual user that is also unfamiliar with the topic. So therefore it would be reasonable to need additional explanation besides just a blind link. The "See also" guidelines say explicitly "When the relevance of the added links is not immediately apparent, provide a brief explanatory sentence". Furthermore, you might also want to review WP:NPA regarding no personal attacks. -- Bovineone 17:27, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I live in the Austin Area too. Help me understand what it takes to get listed on the Commercial Products section of your article. Our OS/2 Product from 1993, holds the distinction as being the very first commercially available 32bit Multi-Threaded Backup software, and the first product to offer complete disaster recovery from a boot disk. I'll be glad to document this for you.

While a high-school student I used to work at JPL for the Kidsat program in 1996 and coded the first Data System webpages (geo map navigator and photo viewer), and also the first versions of the Flight Software that ran aboard the Thinkpad laptop onboard the shuttle to control the camera to take the pictures. Edit to US-airport

Jeff -

Writing in regarding your edit to US-airport template that a) I added to discussion page and b) had a discussion with MJHankel about the addition of the link and c) seems to be figuring out a way to remove it instead of a way to keep it (the reasons for removal keep changing).

Simply looking at the nature of the link in the same light as Flight Aware and AirNav, the link to MyMetar is complimentary. It is providing pilots "flight rules" interpretation that is not provided by other services. "Flight rules" applies to the analysis of the current conditions and labeling the conditions as "Visual", "Marginal Visual", "Instrument Conditions", "Low Instrument Conditions". Pilots use this information to determine whether it is legal to fly given their certificate rating. The website is also a gratis service.

The FlightAware link was added in October 2005. FlightAware did not launch until November 2005. At the time the link was added, they had few users. MyMetar went public beta in October 2006 and is running 2M hits through it annualized.

I'm confused by, from my point of view, appears to be an inconsistent application of logic. Do I need to wait for other users of MyMetar.com post the link? If the addition of the link is a valid and value adding contribution when objectively evaluated on the merits of the content provided, does the source matter?

Notability is one major concern regarding inclusion status, for which wikipedia has established policies. Mymetar.com does not even appear to be in Alex's top 100,000 ranking. As I mentioned in the talk page, there also doesn't appear to yet be any significant amount of Google hits that would qualify mymetar's notability.

I am also a little concerned about the premise that your site is being positioned towards pilots to rely on your site to judge the safety of flying conditions. There are significant liability concerns about offering a non-certified source for such safety information. All pilots are expected to have the ability to directly understand raw metar reports provided by direct FAA sources without intermediate interpretation anyways, so I question the general utility of such a site.

And you again bring up the subject of self-promotion. Although the page in question is not quite a biography, Wikipedia has guidelines on WP:AUTO and WP:BIO that discuss some of the similar types of concerns that exist. --Bovineone 09:46, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Help with Virtual Iron entry?

Hi Bovineone,

I hope you can help, as you have a bit more wikipedia experience than I do and you have already contributed to the article in question. An anonymous user at IP 216.254.57.130 has repeatedly made the same change of incorrect information (does not match up to source). I am assuming (and perhaps shouldn't do so) that their complaint was to the reference of Virtual Iron being a top contributor to the Xen project. I've reverted the latest incorrect information from this user and omitted the reference to top contributor instead saying "to which Virtual Iron is a contributor to" (as "top" is a subjective word and probably should not be included). Is this the correct response? I'm certainly not trying to get into an edit war. Thanks for any guidance. Vanpedia 22:39, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Or how about a more recent statistics that can confirm the contributor information, than the outdated presentation that is currently cited? Also, can you clarify your relationship to Virtual Iron? Thanks for the reply. I don't have any other information than what I posted as a source and am not really sure if there's any updated information. I'm interested in the software and have downloaded VMware, Virtual Iron and XenSource (also, new to Wikipedia, at least as a non-anonymous contributor). I've become somewhat fascinated with the "wiki culture" over the last couple of weeks.

Fallingwater

Sorry, but I struck your recent edit to Fallingwater. Reinforcing steel is a trivial contribution to overall weight of a concrete member. Plain concrete wieghs 145 pounds per cubic foot; reinforced concrete is 150± pounds per cubic foot. MARussellPESE 13:49, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm not a structural engineer, so I cannot validate your apparent claim that adding steel to concrete will never result in deadweight. You might want to remove the same text that is found in Frank_Lloyd_Wright#Notable_projects_after_the_Prairie_Period, since that is my source for it and I thought that was a significant claim if true. -- Bovineone 14:11, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Figuring it out is fairly easy for me. Consider this example, and not that removed from the Fallingwater cantilevers:

A 20' long cantilevered balcony (an assembly area at 100 psf), 12" thick (150 psf), would need 1.70± in²/ft of reinforcing steel. (¾" bars at 3" centers.)

If one doubled that (3.4 in²/ft, ¾" bars at 1½" centers), the additional weight would be 4.0 psf vs. the 250 psf total of dead and live service loads. (< 2% increase)

You also would now have serious problems getting concrete placed around a mat of steel that tightly spaced. Since the record doesn't indicate that the contractor had placing problems, even after doubling the steel, I would concur from a cursory consideration that the cantilevers were likely woefully under-strength.

About Rechenberg and Gaussian adaptation

I have observed that Rechenberg used Gaussian adaptation (GA,in this mail) prior to me, Gregor Kjellström, alias kjells. Unfortunately, I can't see any scientific reason for that in the litterature. GA is about maximization of manufacturing yield and minimization of tolerance costs (centering and tolerancing).

As a model of natural evolution GA may also carry out a simultaneous maximization of mean fitness and average information using the theorem of Gaussian adaptation, not discovered by Rechenberg. Also, I can't see any references to Rechenberg about centering and tolerancing in any important paper in these contexts.

In the article about GA I have included a reference to Rechenberg about the probability of success which usually is = .18 in his case and 0.37 = 1/e in the GA-case. This is only an example showing that the theorem of efficiency may be applicable to a large class of genetic algorithms including the algorithm due to Rechenberg and many other algorithms such as Gaussian adaptation and Simulated annealing for instance.--Kjells 14:16, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

I was tending to believe it was from an episode TNG rather than a movie, since you had uploaded the image with the television template declared on it. I cannot immediately recognize the particular instance, but it looks like Earth is in the background. I don't see any contributions from you on Platform Computing, so I assume you must be the same as User:Paladin1979. In any case, you appear to have been warned many times on your User talk:Paladin1979 page by other users about spamming (spamming is a form of vandalism). Please see WP:SPAM regarding advertisement links. Rara Avis

Hi, you recently added a redirect for "rara avis" to the music group Rarae Avis. Most people typing rara avis would be looking for the meaning of the term, which can be found in the entry "List of Latin Phrases (P-R)". It would make sense to have a disambiguation page offering both a link to the music group and to the latin phrase but I don't know Wikipedia well enough to create that page. I would suggest something like three columns, "First round participant", "First round semi-finalist", "Second round participant", and possibly a fourth "Won round" listing the two winners only. Slacker

Thanks for the cleanup-- i was doing a fast rough cut. I suspect the history section could do with yet more shortening--My idea was to remove everything discussed in the later parts about the actual service. And my presumption tends to be that sections written in the present tense in a history section are likely to be either a copy of press announcements or writing in the same style. The first thing I did was changed them to the past, so it doesn't read that way now--but probably every one of them should be rewritten to avoid the likely copyvio. (The second thing I did was change almost all the "SLACKER" to "the company" or "the service".

If you like to do this sort of spam removal , we can certainly use help. I learned what I know from Durova's excellent guide WP:BF

I agree that much of its history section should be abbreviated and maybe rewritten into more of a general prose format, rather than just date-stamped list of items.
