Hello Jon[edit]

Hello there, based on your messages at Talk:Jon Butcher I assume you are Jon Butcher himself? I see that you were asking for help and I would like to offer my assistance if you would like.

To answer your questions, I've given some information about editing Wikipedia in my welcome template above. Some of the basic tenets of Wikipedia are included. You can feel free to read them at your leisure, or suggest that your friend do so (I assume your friend was the one logging in as JBAxis?)

Wikipedia does have guidelines regarding a person who edits his own biography (or the biography of a friend or other person he is close to), and considers that to be a conflict of interest. That doesn't mean that it's forbidden, but there are suggestions on the best way to do this without rubbing other editors the wrong way. The main reason why we suggest caution when a person has a conflict of interest is because it's often difficult for a person to be impartial when writing about themselves or someone they are close to.

On the other hand, we also have a policy for biographies of living people which states that we take great care to keep such biographies as fair and accurate as possible. In order to not defame or otherwise unfairly portray a living person we try to keep everything in the article referenced by reliable sources. We also take seriously the complaints brought against an article by the subject of the article, and if there are inaccuracies we certainly would like to know what they are so that they can be corrected.

My suggestion to you is to make suggestions on the talk page of the article, not unlike what you have done already. Or, your friend can do so. I suspect that neither of you are familiar with Wikipedia, and that's just fine, we welcome everyone and we try to be helpful to those who are new. Some of the recent edits to the article have rewritten the article in a style that isn't appropriate for the encyclopedia and have broken some rules, but there are experienced editors willing to help you in correcting the material in the article (or adding more information). You might wish to avoid editing the article directly, however. If you have any questions please leave a message at my talk page and I'll see what I can do for you. Thank you! -- Atama 23:23, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re: Jon Butcher Wiki page- help ![edit]

Hello Atama, First, thank you so much for contacting me, I can't tell you how confusing my brief experience this afternoon with the Wiki interface was[ LOL]. Anyway 'yes', I am in fact the Jon Butcher, here's what brought me to this sorry place; an associate [ not really a friend but someone with whom I've done business but never met] volunteered to assist with my Wiki page after he brought it to my attention. I took a look and it was indeed populated with incorrect factual information [ places, events, timeline, dates], missing information[ time line, career biography, discography ] and patently mis-leading statements of fact. Being the subject of the page it seemed obvious that i would be best qualified to confirm the official record, with the actual changes being done by my associate Scott. This he attempted to do, and it was this morning that I happened by to give it another look when I noticed the posted warnings, none of which I completely understand.

In any case I am quite prepared to either start over from scratch [with your desperately needed assistance] OR simply re-craft what's already there into 'Wikik-spec', again with your explicit guidance. My only interest was and is one of accuracy and thoroughness. Though much of my history is Google-able I do consider myself a forthright and reliable source where factual data is concerned. If the text that's there is too worthy i'm certain your guiding hand would make the difference in short order.

The fact is I really need help. Given the situation I feel completely unqualified to do the actual page setting up myself, and I'm wondering if there was any way you might be able to set it up for me ? I realize this is probably an imposition but I really do feel inept right about now. And I'm be happy to populate your Jon Butcher music collection in the bargain ! Warm regards and standing by, Jon

RE: Jon Butcher Wiki page- help ![edit]

(copied across from Talk:Jon Butcher - although that page is for discussing the article itself, requests for help are best placed on your own talk page)

To Whom It May Concern, I am requesting help from some of you more knowledgable individuals who can help with my Wiki issue. Not long ago a friend and associate volunteered to assist me in improving my Wiki page because it was previously full of factual errors and other mistakes. To that end I supplied him with relevent factual information and specific detail in order to make the page interesting and factually correct. Upon reviewing his efforts today I now have multiple [public] warnings at my page and I don't know why, nor is it clear to whom I should be addressing these concerns, or even what the problems with the page are. I am keenly interested in fixing these problems asap, and as the subject himself I feel that I am in the best position to present factual and complete biographical information. I am therefore posting here to hopefully solicit some helpful direction regarding the creation of my Wiki page which confirms to the rules and is factually complete. If you can assist please contact me asap. Thank you, Jon Butcher jon.butcher@ca.rr.com phone no removed, studio 9/25/09

Hi there. Wikipedia is extra-careful about biographic articles, so if there is any information (particularly negative information) that lacks an appropriate reliable source, let us know and we will remove it immediately. Additionally, you may wish to contact the Wikimedia Foundation - please see WP:BIOSELF for information on this.
With respect to editing an article about yourself, please take the time to read about conflict of interest, and best practice in these cases.
Please ask a specific question below, and add {{helpme}} so that we are alerted - or talk to us live, with this or this.
Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  19:15, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
