Henrietta Lacks[edit]

Great scholarship on the article. Do you have more information about her family. I am trying to find her parent's names. I think I found her on the 1930 census, but want to be sure. When I saw "talk", I had no idea what to do. I don't know much more now. Thank you for your compliment. Yes,her birth name is different. But, her last name was Pleasant or Pleasants. I did research on the family , and had contacts with them for a year or two,or more. I was asked to do research by residents of Turner Station after I was asked to come down and meet the BBC film makers of "Modern Times".

Later, I wrote a letter to Johns Hopkins, I received a BA there in 1972, asking them to participate in commemorative activities. They declined but they referred indirectly to the problem of discarded material that I wrote about in my edits of the Henrietta Lacks' entry in Wikipedia. I am not looking at this letter.

I worked hard to commemorate the family with members of the Lacks' family and Turner State residents for two to three years, and to promote other commemorations of them. I have continued to do so. But,I no longer work closely with the family or the Turners Station community.

A Commission ended in 2002 I think; the same year Moore died ,again I think, which pointed to the need to make sure that Americans were informed about discarded materials.  Discarded materials is not covered by the informed consent provision. I am not giving her name to you now because I do not know whether publishing this fact may be detrimental to efforts being undertaken to commemorate her.Bwyche 15:02, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How can you call what I was doing "vandalism" when most of my edits were just entering inline citations which were requested by reviewers of this article. And when you reverted my edits I was only trying to fix a broken link in the external links section and in the text. I had put the link in earlier and had found out that it was not working. If you look at the history section , you will see that most of my edits were in-line citations, and external links. With the last link I was fixing, I thought I would have been finished making the inline citations and external links requested. I have reverted the rv by the previous editor. It would appear to have been a mistaken rv when the editor was on vandal patrol. That's really the only conclusion i can find. Your edits were fine, and some of your sourcing far beyond what Wikipedia expects. I have never seen 10 seperate sources quoted in one paragraph before! Thank you for your excellent contributions. Be aware that we have thirteen year olds reverting as many vandalisms as they can as fast as they can in game like fashion. Mistakes get made. Also realize that the message was "canned" and sent automatically and not actually thought out and typed out. So no need to get upset. It is just typical wiki-style mistake and correction. Sorry you got caught by it though. Cyber-space can provoke real emotions even if some do treat it like a game. I read it. I was trying to verify points that may be controversial. Tell Mike I am a "she" not a "he", a "girl" and not a "guy"I probably got carried away I was so frustrated when I saw almost no new citations and references after I provided some around February. faux pas - Imagination over sense - I imagined you as a fifty year old "guy" gladly contributing to any Afro-American history that you were interested in (Hey I type with one finger too) and being swamped with the "sacred cows" in wikipedia. I have never refered to you a male or female within the project. Emails it wouldn't trace long to source. I was not offended ( I thought it was funny) and if you meant over fifty and African American you were right on these two counts,though . I'm interested in African American and non African American history. Thank you for everything. May I recommend you start with Wikipedia:Ignore all rules and a prior version that might be more helpful. Especially "Over time, familiarize yourself with the rules as well as the underlying philosophies behind them. [...] Participation in Wikipedia is not contingent upon knowledge of any rules. If someone unknowingly breaks a rule, politely point her to the appropriate rule pages, but still consider that her judgment may be correct." WAS 4.250 12:13, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article status[edit]

Notice to all members of WikiProject Maryland[edit]

There are a few things going on right now in WikiProject Maryland that I thought all members should know about, especially the first one.

  • Not too long ago, Marylandstater raised the question of exactly how many members of the project are still active. For this reason, I'm asking everyone who is still active, and wants to remain in the project, to put an asterisk (*) after their username on the project's participants list. You have until the end of November 17, 2007 to do so, sometime after that, all the names that do not have an asterisk will be removed. This is just to clean up the ever expanding list. If you've been gone and come back to find that you've been removed from the list, don't take it personally, just re-add yourself! I won't feel bad at all if no one gets removed, in fact, it would be nice if all 30 members still consider themselves active. Also, this won't affect the two subprojects, but speaking of the subprojects...
  • As of sometime next week WikiProject Baltimore City College will be no more. Myself, Golem88991, and John Carter have decided to make it into a task force of WikiProject Maryland. If you have any objections, concerns, or comments, please post them in the talk page topic concerning this.

Now for the exiting news:

  • I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Baltimore Task Force! Those interested in contributing to Wikipedia's numerous articles related to Maryland's largest city, now have a place to collaborate.
  • I'd also like to take this time to propose a project newsletter. Any comments should be directed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maryland#Newsletter.

A couple last things:

  • The portal is in desperate need of maintenance, anyone who's interested, go check it out.
  • It's probably a good idea to add the project page (and thus the project talk page) to your watchlist. That way, you can easily see when new comments are posted.

Use of New Template[edit]

I have created a template {{WikiProject Maryland/flag/animated}} using a commons image that could be used on the front page of the Maryland project. As you can see, I have configured it to fly behind the wiki-puzzle-world logo in the upper left portion of the screen. Chill on Mr. Hopkins[edit]

It would probably be a good idea if you stepped away from Johns Hopkins for a little while. You have a lot of interesting information about things semi-related to the man, but the article is absolutely unreadable. I've tried in the past to comb through and put together a decent article, but everything gets reverted and you continue to overdecorate the tree. The Sociology WikiProject is conducting a roll call (or min-census, if you prefer). More then five years down the road, we have over 50 members, but we don't know how many of them are still active in the sociology area. If you are or want to become once again an active contributor to the sociology content on Wikipedia, please move your name from the inactive to the active list on our roll call.

In other news, we have reactivated the newsletter :) At least, for this announcement. We also have a new, automated to do listing, an active tag and assess project (which has identified about 1,800 sociology articles on Wikipedia, and assessed about 1,3000 of them), and three new userboxes for your self-identification pleasure :) On a final note, I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions.

WikiProject Sociology Newsletter: III (December 2010)[edit]

Spreading the meme since August 2006

The Sociology WikiProject third newsletter is out!

According to our April mini-census, we have 15 active members, 6 semi-active ones and 45 inactive. Out of those, 4 active, 3 semi-active and 1 inactive members have added themselves to corresponding categories since the mini-census. The next one is planned, roughly, for sometime next year. The membership list has been kept since 2004.

On that note, nobody has ever studied WikiProjects from the sociological perspective... if you are interesting in researching Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Research and wiki-research-l listerv.

Moving from research to teaching, did you know that many teachers and instructors are teaching classes with Wikipedia? This idea is getting support from the Wikimedia Foundation, and some really useful tools have been created recently. I have experience with that, having taught several undergad classes, so feel free to ask me questions on that!

And as long as I am talking about professional issues, if any of you is going to any sociological conferences, do post that to our project - perhaps other members are going there too?

In other news: the a automated to do listing reported in the April issue went down shortly afterwards, but seems to be on the path to reactivation. We still have an active tag and assess project, and comparing the numbers to the April report, we have identified about 350 more sociology-related articles (from 1,800 to 2,150) and assessed about 100 (from 1,300 to 1,400).

We now have a listing of most popular sociology-related pages. It is updated on the 1st of every month, starting with August, and reports which of our sociology-tagged articles are most frequently read. Of course, GIGO holds true, so after looking at it right now and trying to determine what is our most popular article, my first action was to shake my head and remove Criminal Minds (which, perhaps not too surprisingly, outranks all sociology articles in period tested). Second item I noticed it this month's Industrial Revolution, beating Criminal Minds, that moved from close to 30th position in August/September, to 9th in October and 2nd in November. Finally, with the reactivation of Article Alerts, we are getting our own here. Bookmark that page so you can keep track of sociology related deletion debates, move debates, good and feature article discussions, and more.

Our first task force (Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology/Social movements task force) was created (1 June 2010).

If you have basic or better graphic skills, our projects needs a dedicated barnstar (award) (currently the closest we can get is the Society Barnstar.

As always, I highly recommend watchlisting the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sociology page, so you can be aware of the ongoing discussions.

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Maryland might be inactive or semiactive and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States.
