BBC

I saw the [[1]] page which you edited, and made a couple of trivial edits myself. My concern is that there seems to be little or no referencing and one of the few is to the BBC itself. It feels rather like some of the troublesome bus and train pages.
I am not up to dealing with it. [[2]] seem to be involved, so maybe all the unsourcec stuff is OK?SovalValtos (talk) 10:45, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
Those pages are a mess. They attract fancruft and original research but I have not had the time or energy to get stuck into them. Wikiprojects are informal and may just be a collection of enthusiasts with little respect for wider Wikipedia standards. Wiki policies trump local consensus among such groups.--Charles (talk) 13:06, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
I am beginning to see the necessity of managing one's efforts and priorities. An occasional Spring Clean as an example might not go amiss though. SovalValtos (talk) 13:27, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Adoption issues

Dear Charles,

I want to be adopted by yourself. My name is Dmitri, i'm 24, i'm Russian and live there. I'm interested in a plenty stuff like economics, history, linguistics, culture of Scandinavia and find myself in other spheres often. The page I fundamentally edited by myself (by IP editions as well as under my nickname) in the English Wikipedia is called Eastern Slavic naming customs, so that's possible to assess my efforts. I have chosen it because the subject seems to be intersting for me and i felt myself as being able to contribute the refined and positive information in details to other readers. The mentioned page is my first in the Wikipedia so I can truly say that i'm unexperienced here. I'd like to try to get some adoption school to probably continue editing.

Adoption for me is about meeting several goals. In particular, I will be glad to be adopted because I'd be glad to practice my English, to make some contribution to World society within my abilities, to meet new people from another countries to discuss the issues i'm preoccupied with and other :) I probably like the communication with another people itself as well.

Consider the adoption issue please, plz.

Sincerely, Dmitri

Hello Dmitri
I will be pleased to help any way I can. It is good to have editors from non English speaking countries to help improve coverage of those countries. It is an interesting subject you are working on. You need to Include citations to sources for any facts you add. The sources do not have to be in English and do not have to be online, but they do have to be published and reliable. The nice thing about Wikipedia is there are other people who can help improve the English and you will learn by watching what they do. Happy editing!--Charles (talk) 21:42, 8 June 2014 (UTC)

Dear Charles,

let's try then :) I suppose the mutual interaction to be seminal by it's essence, i adore British English (love it's pronounciation which is close to germanic) and i found the subject of English churches to be interesting. And yes, i'm not a native speaker of English, so, although i know all the grammar, i may do mistakes or use unproper linguistic tools sometimes; the practice only is the remedy ;) I've noticed your recomendations regarding citations made above, i'll try to fill this lack. And relatively to the subject of my potential edits - i think the direction you've figured out is proper: i'd probably start with articles on national (or East Slavonic as whole) culture. I can't say that this subject is my favourite, but I like it in general and i assessed the potential novelty for English-speaking World, which I hope to be able to contribute. I'm not informed relatively the established practice of co-operation within the adoptions, but you can add me in your Skype if you want, mine account is dmitri7807.

What should we do technically to make it able for me do be adopted by youself?

You are adopted. No formalities needed. I had to uninstall Skype because it messed up my Wikipedia edits. It formats book ISBN numbers as telephone numbers and I could not find any way to stop it.--Charles (talk) 12:23, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Charles,

thank you very much. No problems about Skype, we talk here then. So couldn't you refine how would we arrange the interaction? Is it about my possibility to ask you when i have some difficulties or it implies something else maybe?

P.S. If that still matters: the treatment of described problem with ISBN and phone numbers is in Skype settings. Menu "Tools" -> "Settings" -> "Advanced settings" -> to turn off the flag "Use Skype for dialing numbers 'calto: links' at web-pages" (i don't use English version of Skype, so the titles of menues may differ, that's just a translation).

Hi Dmitri. Thank you for the advice on Skype. If you have any problems just ask me here.--Charles (talk) 17:07, 10 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello, Charles

may I ask for your advice. The idea is that i want to extend the article about the monastery. I want to retain all the information that takes place now, but to add a subpage relatively to the cathedral of monastery. I also probably assume the articles to be like that: the main page about the monastery includes some paragraph about the church with some brief information; that paragraph contains the link to the main article about the church. There's no article in English Wikipedia about that churche now. I've got several tries to perform all this, but they were unsuccessful, unfortunately, that's why i am writing. --Sterndmitri (talk) 08:41, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Hello Dmitri
I have seen similar sub-pages kept for less interesting buildings within other compexes so that should be acceptable. The best way will be to make a user subpage in your own space where you can work on it until it is ready to be moved to the main encyclopedia. Similar to this page I have been working on for too long. You can make pages like this by typing User:Sterndemitri/page name in the search box and clicking "go". This will generate a red link which you click to create the page.
If you wish, when the article is ready, you can submit it to the "Did you know?" section of the main page, where new articles are shown for a day. You then get a shiny gold credit for making it. I have done this with a few articles such as this one. It will then be reviewed by experienced editors to see that it is up to basic standards, although it does not need to be perfect.--Charles (talk) 09:17, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Charles,

thank you for your reply, it is very helpful. Beautiful buildings you describe. One more question, related to previous. I would potentially like (if i'll have enough free time) to drive to that monastery (i am close to it) and make my own pictures for pasting at the page. I don't pretend these pictures to be of some special cultural or financial value, so i'm ready to share them with pleasure. I also think, that they may represent the latest image of the monastery (reconstruction works have taken place, so it looks a little bit differently in its particular parts, than present pictures posted in Wikipedia) and (this is my personal desire) I would probably like to represent "with my own eyes" what I describe, if the last doesn't contradict to any principles of Wikipedia.

Couldn't you refine (or redirect me to some page), what will be the typical procedure for adding these pictures? I ask, because I have problems related to pictures in Wikipedia from time to time due to different reasons, including specification of copyrights, not simultaneous adding and ability to use etc. The last time I tried, I had failure. --Sterndmitri (talk) 11:07, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Using your own photographs is good. Upload them at Commons so they can be used on other language wikis. Follow the upload wizard and it will be easy with your own photos because you own the copyright. You can link them to the article with double square brackets as usual.--Charles (talk) 13:41, 12 June 2014 (UTC)

Pangbourne College

Please could you have a look at this page Pangbourne College . In the past few weeks I have been trying to remove trivial detail as requested on the Talk page. An IP editor, or rather a series of editors with very similar styles, have been editing without putting anything in the Edit Summary and without giving references. There have been no responses in Talk. SovalValtos (talk) 09:54, 13 June 2014 (UTC)

Indiana University South Bend

Dear Charlesdrakew. I recently made a couple of small edits on the page Indiana University South Bend. One has been reverted without reason given in Edit Summary, seemingly by an editor even newer than myself, who may have COIs. I have further received a message on my talk page questioning my involvement. I feel I should be able to deal with this myself, but I cannot do it as quickly, accurately or as diplomatically as the other editor deserves. There seem to be plenty of assertions on the page which could do with refs and now a rush of additions without refs.SovalValtos (talk) 14:05, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

There is no Talk page for user Tlsheppa, so although I have replied to the message left on my Talk page I am not sure it will have been brought to the user's attention. The only thing written on the user page is "Tlsheppa is an employee at Indiana University South Bend, a regional campus of Indiana University located in South Bend, Indiana. I have many duties, including editor of the Wikipedia page for IU South Bend." SovalValtos (talk) 12:17, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Obvious conflict of interest. The first post will start their talk page. I suggest placing the template {{subst:uw-coi}} there. That will generate a COI warning message. You can also leave a talkback message to show you have replied by going to their talkpage and clicking the "tb" tab at the top of the page.--Charles (talk) 13:42, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. I have started the user's talk page by posting the template. I was not sure if I should have signed it, being an official looking thing. In the end I did not, as my lack will presumably be corrected automatically. I could not find the User's tb tab anywhere. SovalValtos (talk) 14:00, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
The page history shows who posted it anyway. Having the tb tab probably depends on having Twinkle enabled in your preferences.--Charles (talk) 16:34, 19 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. I will not Twinkle yet, too much else to do. SovalValtos (talk) 06:17, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Creation-Evolution Controversy

Never feed the trolls.

So, what is your stance on it? Dan Watts (talk) 00:04, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)*glances at Flying Spaghetti Monster userbox on user page* Uh...
As I myself am on both sides of the the fence (even tend to deny the fence's existence), when I say Charles does damn good job at maintaining a neutral point of view in such matters, you can rest assured that whatever his stance is (even if it was Last Thursdayism), it would not bias his editing. Ian.thomson (talk) 00:19, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Ian.--Charles (talk) 08:27, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I apologize for being WAY too curt. What is your stance on the information that you removed? What is wrong/unclear/unreferenced about it? Dan Watts (talk) 09:54, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

You brought up consensus. Consense (or go on record against it). Hello? Hello? Operator? Dan Watts (talk) 11:23, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
If I wish to comment on that I will do so at the article talkpage. I merely pointed out that you need to gain consensus before changing the article. Now run along.--Charles (talk) 13:00, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Reverting an edit is not what I would call merely pointing out the need to gain consensus. Perhaps your definition of pointing out is different than mine or perhaps that phrase doesn't mean what you think it means. Dan Watts (talk) 19:11, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
I infer you are a Little less talk, and a lot more action person. Strange, considering the gain concensus message you send. Shedding light on the subject might help. Oh well, we wouldn't want hobgoblins. Dan Watts (talk) 11:41, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
One more edit against talk page consensus and you will have to justify it at WP:ANI/3RR.Charles (talk) 12:49, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
I've added the page to my watchlist. Ian.thomson (talk) 13:02, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Ian. Plenty of trolls there wanting to be fed.Charles (talk) 13:18, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Odd working bus types from Rainham Garage

Hello

You should look at London Vehicle Finder it's a website where it tracks all the London Bus Routes that are currently in service. I like to add the other bus types on route and you have reverted the changes that I made. If you put in 174 on the search box of the London Vehicle Finder search box and if you find a fleet number on the list which is 150__ then it is a Scania Omnicity. With the Enviro400's on the 365, fleet number that begins with 19___ is an Alexander Dennis Enviro400 running as odd working on the 365. But most of the time the Scania Omnicitie's operate as odd workings on 174 but its not listed on the London Bus Routes details page. There is also recent photographic evidence by Michael of the Scania Omnicity on route 174.

I hope I explained the situation regarding the matter about it.

No indication of being a reliable source, no inline citation and unencyclopedic trivia anyway. Using photos is original research and not allowed.--Charles (talk) 16:35, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

Evening Charles

London Vehicle Finder uses data from Transport for London feeds. They may not be official allocations, but it's being used to fill the Peak Vehicle Requirement as the tender says. So you may be interested to see more about London Vehicle Finder by looking at their FAQ page and discuss at their Yahoo Group. Even Live London Bus Maps uses TFL feeds, when you click on a moving red dot on the map, it indicates a live bus and gives you the registration of the bus.

Freebbc (talk) 21:30, 5 July 2014 (UTC)

The terrible spelling on that FAQ page does not inspire confidence in its reliability. Self published by some unknown person. I do not care what it is fed on, it is not a stable or reliable source for Wikipedia. That type of ephemeral trivia does not belong in an encyclopedia. There are other places such as UK Transport Wiki on Wikia where you can do that sort of thing.Charles (talk) 21:06, 6 July 2014 (UTC)

Hammersmith Palais

Hi Charlesdrakew. I see from these edits (diff, diff and diff) that you're helping to keep unsourced edits out of the Hammersmith Palais article. The bigger problem with the article is the general lack of referencing throughout. For example, in all this text the only reference appears to be irrelevant.

The Palais de Danse opened in 1919 in order to host ballroom dancing and various kinds of dance bands, among which were the new jazz bands. It remained a popular dance venue from its start to the 1980s, but after that played host mainly to live pop music. For a period in the 1930s, part of the Palais site was also used as an ice rink, with the original London Lions ice hockey team using it as a base. During the 1960s Joe Loss and his Orchestra, with singer Rose Brennan, were a regular feature on Saturday nights.[citation needed] On 21 January 2007, the Palais was condemned for demolition. The venue closed in April 2007.
The Palais had a secret: it was used to make tanks during the war. It was also used as a tram-shed for London's trams. The rails for the trams were still under the floor, along with the pipes for the ice rink. Parts of the very well sprung dance floor had removable sections where one could clearly see all the tracks and pipes. During the 1960s and 1970s, the house bands included: Joe Loss, Andy Ross (of Come Dancing fame) Ken Mackintosh, Tony Evans, and Zodiac, a band still active in 2010 with at least three original members.[2] Many Saturday nights, in excess of 2,000 people would visit the venue. One of the features was a huge revolving stage with a band on each side (this also caused a number of accidents when microphones and stands were left on the revolve).
The Palais played host to countless artists; among them: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, David Bowie, The Sex Pistols, The Cure, The Police, U2, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation, Hanoi Rocks and Kylie Minogue.
The venue was named in the The Clash song "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais". Joe Strummer managed to get thrown out one Thursday afternoon for gaining entry without permission. It was named in the Ian Dury and the Blockheads song "Reasons to be Cheerful, Part 3". Bands such as PiL, The Cramps and Soft Cell (who played their "farewell" concerts there in January 1984) made the venue popular for London gig-goers.
From the late 1980s onward, the Palais staged a mix of live music gigs, dance nights, and private events. The venue accommodated the popular School-Disco club night, which subsequently moved to the London Forum in Kentish Town. Promoters Onyx Promotions championed Brit-Asian bands and DJs including: DCS, Heera, Juggy D, Panjabi Hit Squad, Premi, RDB, Rishi Rich and Xzecutive/San-j Sanj. The Students' Union at Imperial College School of Medicine frequently hired the Palais as a venue for student nights.
In its last years, the Palais was owned by a company called Barclub Ltd, controller of a chain of themed bars named Po Na Na. In the early 2000s, the company briefly renamed the club Po Na Na Hammersmith, but in recognition of the venue's historic reputation the original name Hammersmith Palais was reinstated. The Palais closed in April 2007, with Kasabian, Idlewild, and Jamie T among artists playing the last gigs there.
The final gig at the Palais was a performance by The Fall on 1 April 2007, a recording of which was subsequently released as the live album Last Night at The Palais.

If this is an article that you're interested in maintaining, maybe it needs a complete rewrite, or at least the history section substantially trimming. --Northernhenge (talk) 20:55, 12 July 2014 (UTC).

Interested yes but too busy to do much in the short term. I am sure there must be sources out there but I have not found much on the net.Charles (talk) 21:18, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Please do not alter my external links

Dear Charlesdrakew,

Please would you refrain from removing the eternal link to the website about Dartford. The content for this website is entirely appropriate and relevant to an encyclopedia article on the town of Dartford. Should you have a specific concern(s) about aspects of this website's content please let me know in detail what they are first before removing any links.

Thank you

(talk page stalker) I hope you don't mind that I redid your comment to remove leading spaces - they don't work well as formatting on Wikipedia pages. I'd be careful with terminology such as "my external links". They aren't yours; they are the encyclopaedia's, and other editors can and will alter or remove them as they see fit. You signed up for this when you edited the page. You are actually being treated very reasonably by both Charles and the other editor who also removed the link. If you wish to discuss it further you should first read up on policies, as you have been advised, and next take it to the article's Talk page and try to build a consensus there for its inclusion. That, I promise you, is your best chance of a good outcome. Finally, you possibly didn't mean "eternal link" in your body text, though if you did it is quite witty! :) Best wishes DBaK (talk) 00:14, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Adoption

Hello Charles ! I Am New To Wikipedia, And Wish To Become a Good Editor. English Is Not My Main Language So There Can Be Problems. Will You Consider This ?

@AIHGAIHTH8ATH8AHGAG9JA9GA: Sure. If you want to make a positive contribution I will help. What sort of thing are you interested in doing?Charles (talk) 21:39, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Why? It makes sense to put page title at the first place. Also, MOS:BOLDTITLE seems to agree with me: "If an article's title is a formal or widely accepted name for the subject, display it in bold as early as possible in the first sentence". --80.7.87.151 (talk) 14:41, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
