The term metal fume fever is correct and very dangerous. The center for disease control contains some but not all information on the subject. As a person who has encountered and experienced metal fume fever here are more facts from my bodies personal experience.. welding or grinding fumes parts per million collect in the air around the welding, grinding metal work area. Once inhaled the eyes start to burn , tear a little and edema of the menegines in the skull cavity sweels the inside of the head. a feeling like a hammer hitting from the inside out. your head feels like a watermelon. the throat and mouth get foam like and you want to spit. of course your thinking is blocked from lack of fresh oxygen and you go back and forth like a poisened racoon in circles. you spit and your eyes tear and burn as your head sweels more. The only hope is remove yourself from the environment immediately and get oxygen or fresh air. gulp in and breathe deep as much fresh air as you can. I tried burnt toat to try to absorb some of the poisons as well as charcoal capsules. the problem with charcoal capsules is they deplete the body of all vitamins minerals and metals. it does take two or three days to recover. Only a very good quality filter mark rated for welding exposure can be used lined with additinal paper or something else. remember the fumes can enter through your eyes, and your clothes at home have to be taken off and washed. your skin also has to be washed and hair. it is like a poison cloud of dust when it is in the air and it settles on you. i am looking into different herbs to try to absorb the fumes before they attack the lungs and airways and cause me such pain. i am sure in nature there is a natural protective plant... i will search for it.
