Notability of Los soneros del barrio[edit]

A tag has been placed on Los soneros del barrio, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Re: Deletion[edit]

Hi, first of all I wanted to state that I don't have access to deleted articles, so I won't be able to enter into specifics here. Your page was tagged by me for deletion, and this decision was endorsed by an admin as you can see in the deletion log. It was deleted on the grounds it was an article about a company that does not assert the importance or significance of its subject. We have certain criteria bands need to meet to be included in Wikipedia. I invite you to read them. As you see, the most important part of the rule is assert. If for example you write an article about Bill Clinton saying only "He was born in 1946, and he's a funny guy that told jokes to Boris Eltsin", it will most likely be dteleted. I you still believe Los soneros del barrio is notable enough to be included, I suggest you to ask the deleting admin, User:Phaedriel, to review his decision. -- lucasbfr ^talk 09:17, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, dear Cmlewan. I've read your message to me regarding this deletion, and I concur with Lucas' assessment on this matter. According to you, this group may be within the notability guidelines we require, but unfortunately, this wasn't evident at the text you wrote. A good way to get more familiar with the matter is reading some of the following pages: WP:BAND and Verifiability. I encourage you to rewrite the articles following these lines and then re-submit it; I can gladly review it for you in order to doublecheck its suitability. Los Soneros Del Barrio is a New York salsa band since 1999. The leader and singer of the band is Frankie Vázquez. He was born in Puerto Rico but moved to New York as a very young child. He returned to Puerto Rico later in life but now lives in New York since a long time. He has worked with New Swing Sextet band - with whom he worked on and off for 15 years - Charansón, Orquesta Calidad, Sonido Taibori, Típica Novel, Louie Sánchez y Las Siete Potencias, Wayne Gorbea, Javier Vázquez y La Sonora, Sonora Matancera, The Lebrón Brothers, Conjunto Libre and Jimmy Bosch.

In 1999, Frankie Vázquez started Los Soneros Del Barrio together with the late Martin Arroyo and John Benítez. (Vázquez has called Arroyo and Benítez the "architects" of the band in an interview.) Los Soneros Del Barrio have released three records: "Martin Arroyo and Frankie Vázquez" (1999), "Remembranzas" (2001) and "Siguiendo la tradición" (2003). The music that Los soneros del barrio play is often described as salsa dura rather than salsa romantica. It has a classic salsa touch.

article suggestion[edit]

Hello, I couldn't help but notice your message on Phaedriel's page about the salsa band that you like. I wanted to suggest that you write the article text either offline or in a subpage, such as User:Cmlewan/sandbox. This way, you can work on the article at your leisure, until it is ready to be officially posted. I also suggest finding references, such as reviews of their performances and any recordings that they may have done. Many albums on Wikipedia mention reviews from the All Music Guide or Rolling Stone, for example. If the band is already the subject of an article on another language Wikipedia, you can also mention this by using this syntax: (for example, the Spanish Wikipedia) [[es:name of band]]. My point is that the more polished your article is, and especially if it asserts notability with independent reviews and other references, the more likely that your article won't be deleted. Please don't be discouraged that your article was deleted. You have to understand that with Wikipedia, you have conflicting desires about the suitability of articles. On one hand, Wikipedia aspires to be comprehensive, far more comprehensive than any print encyclopedia. Towards this end, there are all manner of articles on subjects than would never be covered in such detail by a regular encylopedia: cartoons, roads, etc. On the other hand, there is also the desire to improve Wikipedia's quality by deleting articles that do not appear to merit encyclopedic coverage: often someone's pet dog, an impromptu garage band that never reunited, someone's idea they thought of while drunk, etc.

Your article was unfortunately a victim of this second impulse. Please understand that because there is no centralised control over which articles get included or deleted, what one person sees as valuable, another person may not. This also leads to many topics being overlooked, as you have discovered yourself.

The best way to assert the notability of an article is to include third-party references, especially ones that demonstrate how the subject has exerted some historical, cultural, or scientific influence. I don't know much about salsa music, but perhaps if you looked at books on world music, you might find mention of Los Soneros del Barrio. I think you mentioned that they were/are active in the New York area, so references from the Times, the Post, and the Village Voice might also be good. First, please excuse me about my belated reply, even tho I see my friend Kyoko has expressed great suggestions to you above. I beg your forgiveness, but I still can't understand why you said "you're giving up" on this article. I wasn't aware that you were expecting a reply from me to your previous message; I believed I had already explained to you the basics on writing an article about a musical band or ensemble in compliance to our policies, and I even offered myself to review it for you. The offer still stands, and the whole thing is quite simple, in fact: just a few external references that ensure that the article follows any of the criteria at WP:BAND would suffice. Is that so hard? I'll even offer myself to do it for you, if you want me to. But, sweetie... don't give up so easily!
