Clarification of COI depth

Oshwah, on SharabSalam's talk page, you provided feedback concerning my request for reversion of an edit. After looking at the links you provided, I have the following questions.

1. It's clear that I have a COI with the Ken Coar page as an editor, but I don't see anything in the links that supports your statement that I forbidden to even discuss its content. Can you point me to whatever section I'm missing?
2. What makes a Twitter account 'verified'? Isn't it always a matter of hearsay? Or does it require the seal of verification Twitter applies to some accounts? (Or used to do.)

Hi Coar! Take a look at this section of Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines. It states that "you are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly". While it doesn't directly say that you shouldn't discuss the articles either, it does say that "you may propose changes on talk pages (by using the {{request edit}} template), or by posting a note at the COI noticeboard, so that they can be peer reviewed". In general, you shouldn't participate in discussions that seek to receive input from the community if it directly affects an article that you have a conflict of interest with. Sorry, I just realized that I didn't answer your other question about reliability, verifiability, and Twitter. Take a look at this section of Wikipedia's verifiability policy. It states that Twitter can only be used to verify information that the person has written about themselves, nothing else. Even then, I'd try and look for and provide references to other sources as well, as even Twitter posts have been later deleted due to being hacked, etc. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions for you and I'll be happy to do so. :-) Best - ~Oshwah~^{(talk) (contribs)} 04:15, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Please be careful

Wikipedia has a conflict of interest policy. If you are are or are related to Ken Coar then be aware that Jimmy Wales got into a lot of disrepute for editting his own page on Wikipedia. If you find things that are untrue, then leave a comment on the relevant talk page if you are related. It's about being open :-) Victuallers (talk) 12:54, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

This page is about myself, yes. I ceased editing it directly when I was made aware of this.

Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. This category was created awhile ago but creating an category for a foundation you founded falls pretty far outside what is permitted with COI. Obviously you have a committment to non-profit tech with the Apache Software Foundation and I'm confident you can make positive contributions here. I am not *the* founder of the ASF, merely one of mine - and the one who took the initiative to add it to Wikipedia. I guess I didn't see that as a COI, as I tried to be objective and I believe I also add (at least) Sam Ruby to it. So, my bad for that.

However.

I guess it's a done deal, but claiming the category is poor because the intersection between it and individuals listed on Wikipedia is a bit simplistic. If you look on Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social platforms, you'll find that very many members identify themselves there as such. They just don't have Wikipedia pages, and even if they did, they wouldn't be allowed to edit their own entries to add their ASF member status, so the membership is naturally under-represented in the category.
