  • The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks. [1]
  • Seven new wikis have been created:
  • You can now watch message groups/projects on Translatewiki.net. Initially, this feature will notify you of added or deleted messages in these groups. [9]
  • Dark mode is now available on all wikis, on mobile web for logged-in users who opt into the advanced mode. This is the early release of the feature. Technical editors are invited to check for accessibility issues on wikis. See more detailed guidelines.

Problems

  • Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using mapstyle="osm". This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed. [10]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 May. It will be on all wikis from 2 May (calendar). [11][12]

Hi @TrevorGaeillan!
Having your email address verified won't allow you to upload an image just yet. What you need instead is for your account to be autoconfirmed, which will happen automatically once your account is both 4 days old and you have made at least 10 edits. Once that is so, you should be allowed to upload an image. In the meantime, you can check out this help topic for how to use images once they are uploaded!

How to change or edit the name of the Wiki page?

I submitted an article, and if published, I need the title or name of the wiki article to be edited. How do I edit this? It doesn't show anywhere on the source code.

@TrevorGaeillan, thanks for your question! Once your account is autoconfirmed and the article is published under the mainspace, you will be able to move the article to a new title (provided a valid reason for the page move). Let me know if you have additional questions!

Hi @WatteryFire and thanks for your question! On Wikipedia, most users are humans. However, there are a couple bots that perform automated actions (they have "bot" in their username) that would be tedious to do by hand otherwise. These bots do not have a will of their own (nor is there artificial intelligence around here) and they act under a set of algorithms, supervised by their bot creators. If you want to learn more, you can check out this documentation.
So, simply put, no I am not a bot, but your human mentor here to answer questions you have about editing Wikipedia!

  • The appearance of talk pages changed for all wikis, except for Commons, Wikidata and most Wikipedias (a few have already received this design change). You can read the detail of the changes on Diff. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at remaining wikis in the coming weeks. [13][14]
  • Interface admins now have greater control over the styling of article components on mobile with the introduction of the SiteAdminHelper. More information on how styles can be disabled can be found at the extension's page. [15]
  • Wikimedia Enterprise has added article body sections in JSON format and a curated short description field to the existing parsed Infobox. This expansion to the API is also available via Wikimedia Cloud Services. [16]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 May. It will be on all wikis from 9 May (calendar). [17][18]
  • When you look at the Special:Log page, the first view is labelled "All public logs", but it only shows some logs. This label will now say "Main public logs". [19]

AfD closes

Hi Cocobb8, I was just wondering why you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Craig Murray (disambiguation) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gerhard Lomer as keep, given that they'd been open for less than 24 hours? I !voted keep in the Craig Murray (disambiguation) AfD, but I feel it would have been beneficial for the nomination to have remained open for longer than it was, especially as XfD discussions are usually only closed after seven days. Hey @A smart kitten! I realized that those had over 3 keep already with no delete (or even other) !votes, and didn't see this suddenly turning over to delete consensus, so I thought it was fair to quickKeep them both. Hi. I agree, let the AfD's run even if they are doomed to fail. Some users don't check on a regular basis and there could be valid points raised. And as someone who is committed to keeping Gerhard Lomer (and who is confident zero valid points were available) it hadn't even run 24 hours. Oblivy (talk) 00:02, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Timeline for publishing?

Hi there Cocobb8!! Thanks so much for always responding!

I recently submitted an original article of a actor/voice actor, but, the tags that were automatically attached was "deprecated (unreliable) source." That's unfortunate, because I worked pretty hard to ensure that all sources were valid.

First: Why was this tag auto-attached? Second: Will this tag cause a delay in publishing?

Hello @TrevorGaeillan, thanks for your question. I believe you are talking about Draft:Ronan L. Summers? To me it looks like the article was declined for not being properly sourced. If someone mentioned a deprecated source, that's because some websites/publishers are essentially not used as Wikipedia sources. If you removed such sources, your draft has a good chance of being approved should you fix the issue mentioned below. You may also like to check out this help topic, which outlines which websites/publishers are generally considered reliable.
There are a couple of unnecessary citations in your draft, however. For example, a Wikipedia article citing a Wikipedia source should not be done (you should remove them). Instead, focus on secondary and independent sources.
You will also see that I've fixed the formatting of the reference list.

@Manyareasexpert Reviewing that argument was what the participants in the AfD discussion did. Even then, there was a clear consensus to keep this article with strong arguments, and no delete !votes, this seemed like an obvious consensus to me. Cheers! But the participants could address it, or they could not. But I assume that the one closing the request should. And "Consensus is ascertained by the quality of the arguments given on the various sides of an issue, as viewed through the lens of Wikipedia policy" and is not "the result of a vote" - Wikipedia:Consensus . See WP:NACD. Having 4 participants appealing to the nomination with strong arguments such as having significant WP:RS and meeting WP:GNG for keeping the article is a very clear consensus. The participants do stated that, without providing actual sources which are out of a 2-month news burst however. So we should not call these "arguments", but rather unsubstantiated claims. And it's also very easy to check, so everybody would expect the closer to check these before the close. You can even check it now. ManyAreasExpert (talk) 15:52, 11 May 2024 (UTC)
As I said many times already, 4 different editors came to the same conclusion. They had arguments, and I will not undo my close. As I already said, I was enacting an obvious consensus. If you really think this article has a chance of being deleted, then please bring this discussion elsewhere (where you will likely be told the same thing as I have here). I've re-opened the debate as per WP:NACD (uninvolved administrator clause), as it shouldn't have been closed early. As per my administrator colleagues at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2024 May 11, this shouldn't have been closed early per "SNOW", as it doesn't meet that criteria. I just saw Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Craig Murray (disambiguation), Why did you close this AFD a WEEK early with absolutely no explanation for why? This was a terrible decision. Even an admin who had been editing for 20 years wouldn't close an AFD like this the same day it was posted, much less be a NAC. Liz Read! Talk! 05:42, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

@Liz @Daniel Thanks for letting me know. I was already told the same earlier on my talk page. This happened due to my misunderstanding of the fact that AfDs should run for a week. I have learned from that, and AfD closes that I have performed after that were only for obvious keep consensus after a week (any comments on my other closes?). I will be much more careful in the future. Let me know if there's any other issues. You may go ahead and re-open them though, no problem! I think I will go ahead and step back from AfD closing for a while.

Recent changes

  • On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word __EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__ to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [21]
  • If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [22]
  • Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the alt= attribute. This is identical in usage to the alt= attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [23]
  • The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [24]

Changes later this week

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [25][26]
  • The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [27]

Future changes

  • In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [28]
  • Two columns of the pagelinks database table (pl_namespace and pl_title) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the new linktarget table instead (lt_namespace and lt_title). In your existing SQL queries:
    1. Replace JOIN pagelinks with JOIN linktarget and pl_ with lt_ in the ON statement
    2. Below that add JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id

I would like to edit the page "Novopil, Donetsk Oblast" to remove biased language, but I'm unsure as to where the boundaries lie with that. I believe some of the information, while factually correct, may overemphasize certain aspects of the subject. For example, the use of the word "liberate" and the inclusion of "not a single undamaged house remained in the village after the Russian occupation" could present some bias. How could this be effectively altered without removing important information? Should the stated justification behind political decisions be included to provide perspective, or would that only further introduce bias and lead to speculative conclusions? I agree with you, taking a look at the article, some language is a little biased. Please see this complete Wikipedia guide that will explain neutral point-of-view, and that should make it clearer than I can on how to fix NPOV on that article.

Hello @Ofranzen, thanks for your question. I believe you'd be talking about the article suggestions on your homepage? I don't think there's a way to set it to display articles from different languages of Wikipedia, because each Wikipedia language is its separate project. You may however wish to visit the Swedish Wikipedia to see if you can contribute there too!
