New Article Title?[edit]

Hi Coemgenus. Ref: British Nobles and Gentry, who deserted James into Williams camp. Can you suggest a shorter or more applicable Article heading? I'll just list the basic names; titles; dates to start with, adding further bio/info later. (I'm still relatively new to Wiki, so any editing/formating &c assistance much appreciated) PS. I've used your [green box] format to tidy up my Talk page, if this is OK? If not I'll delete it. Regards. Stephen2nd (talk) 12:11, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Abigail_Masham.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 06:55, 3 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. OsamaK 06:55, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it says that user created the image themself, but why on Earth do you believe that that means that the image creator has released it into the public domain? You absolutely can NOT just assume that uploaders are happy for images to be released under a random free license. If the copyright holders do not release it, then we cannot use it- it's as simple as that. We can't just guess a license. Have you done this before? J Milburn (talk) 21:52, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have not, but the deletion seemed so obviously incorrect that I took an educated guess. Coemgenus 13:11, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article whose FAC you commented on before, up for FAC again[edit]

FYI, an article that you gave comments on during a previous FAC a while back, is up at FAC again. See Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Early life and military career of John McCain. Wasted Time R (talk) 11:36, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beer category decision[edit]

A discussion has been opened on changes that have been made to the existing Beer category system. The changes reverse the decision made by the Project in April 2006. The changes were based on agreement by only two people, and by a discussion that took place outside the Beer Project. There may be some merit in the changes, and to prevent future conflict it is important that there is some discussion of the matter. If you're interested, please see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Beer#Brewery_cats. SilkTork *YES! 14:13, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edits[edit]

Welcome, and thank you for your attempt to lighten up Wikipedia. However, this is an encyclopedia and the articles are intended to be serious, so please don't make joke edits. Readers looking for serious articles will not find them amusing. If you'd like to experiment with editing, try the sandbox, where you can write (almost) whatever you want. Smuckers It has to be good 11:59, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have not made any joke edits, and I have no idea what you're talking about. Please double-check before you place erroneous templates on users' talk pages. And there's no need to welcome me; I've been here a good deal longer than you have. I will also reply on your talk page. Coemgenus 13:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:Civil and WP:Good Faith and don't leave snide remarks on my talk page. As to why I put it on your page, I saw a edit you did in late '06 that was a joke edit. Smuckers It has to be good 22:29, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for work on Sarah Palin article[edit]

Thanks you, Coemgenus, for your assistance on the Sarah Palin article. I hope you keep checking in on the article, as it seems to have a history of consternation and animosity. It's also appreciated when you correct grammar . . . including my own. Ursa2008 (talk) 18:42, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

French Revolutionary Calendar[edit]

Thanks for appreciating my work on the calender.

It may be nice to know that the calendar is a direct descendant of your small template. On the Dutch wikipedia is an extended version by RToV that grew out of your template. It is calculated rather than picked out of a list. I ameliorated it, and by doing so learned how to program in Wikipedia. The calendar has a complete new system, but still is a direct offspring of your original template. --LexTH (talk) 22:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date links[edit]

Your recent edit to Broadway Limited broke a link. 20th Century Limited is a proper noun and should not be written with a lower case C. Slambo (Speak) 14:11, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite right -- sorry for the sloppy editing. Coemgenus 14:16, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I spotted this too. There is now a test in my monobook for proper names. If you replace the entire contents of User:Coemgenus/monobook.js with

  • importScript('User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js')

clear your cache and do the same edit again with that or any other article, you will find that the problem with 20th Century Limited will not happen. Then you can add the other bits of your monobook that you still use. Lightmouse (talk) 13:56, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Watertown, NY explosions[edit]

Sorry about that revert...did this actually happen? Clinevol98 (talk) 00:32, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. I couldn't find it in the New York Times or on Google. Now, it won't disappear. Maybe I need to clear my browser cache or something. Coemgenus 00:34, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah that's strange...the same thing happened to me. This editor also went to the Watertown, New York page and made some note about how 200 people died in these supposed explosions and suggested it might be a suicide bomber. Clinevol98 (talk) 00:35, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Charles Sawyer Russell[edit]

Hal,

Do you have any information on Charles Sawyer Russell? I wrote the article yesterday, but most of the sources are non-military (genealogies, chiefly). I think he's in Generals in Blue, but I'm not sure. Any time you could spare would certainly improve the article. --Coemgenus 17:31, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He's not in Warner's GiB because he was only a brevet Brig Gen. You can find his Eicher entry at http://books.google.com/books?id=Fs0Ajlnjl6AC&pg=PA466&dq=Charles+Sawyer+Russell+eicher&ei=ILqkSOGVIKK-tgPerYmeBQ&client=firefox-a&sig=ACfU3U10iPhRcqnvmqquzt-ki6Od79_LHw . I can send you his extract from www.civilwardata.com if you want to email me. See my user page. Hal Jespersen (talk) 23:05, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ascension / accession[edit]

I left a message on Awxy (talk · contribs)'s talk page requesting that he be a bit more civil with his edit summaries. While I don't agree that "ascension" is "illiterate", the usual term for when a king or queen takes to the throne is accession. Therefore I think we should change it back.

Of course, we probably wouldn't be having this discussion had Awxy left a more curteous edit summary. JRawle (Talk) 20:26, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page[edit]

I'm not sure why you reverted the vandalism warning wrongly placed on my talk page, but I'm interested to know. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Agnamus (talkcontribs) 21:27, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're not supposed to erase warnings left on talk pages. See WP:TALK for more details. --Coemgenus 23:19, 18 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Really? Because WP:TALK says that "Users may freely remove comments from their own talk pages, though archiving is preferred. They may also remove some content in archiving. The removal of a warning is taken as evidence that the warning has been read by the user. This specifically includes both registered and anonymous users." I don't know about you, but the plain meaning is that I can remove whatever I want from my talk page. I'm not sure what kind of crap you're trying to pull, but please mind your own business.Agnamus (talk) 03:45, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So, by your logic, you won't be able to delete this, right? Sweeeeeeet.

Please stop your disruptive editing, such as the edit you made to User Talk:Agnamus. If your vandalism continues, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. Agnamus (talk) 03:51, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reported at WP:AIV. Try concentrating on editing. Good-bye --Coemgenus 10:48, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So you reported that (1) you intentionally misinterpreted a WP policy to vandalize my talk page/attempt to bully me, and that (2) angry user response to said vandalism is vandalism in itself? All of this without actual vandalism (how is this vandalism?) or warning? It'll go far. If any admin actually spends 5 minutes investigating this rather than just letting you rep me out, they'll see I'm right. Agnamus (talk) 14:58, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah Palin Edits[edit]

Hi Coemgenus. Ref "Sarah Palin" you deleted my references to two investigations claiming that they are referenced elsewhere in the article. I can not find any references anywhere else of these investigations of Alaskas Governor. This is a politician who ran on the platform of "Ethics reform" and "Open and Transparent Government" She even gained notariety filing charges against others of "violations of the ethics act" I think it is very germaine that she is under two seperate investigations. Can you please review your edit and get back to me? Thanks.

Dave Adamson209.112.147.8 (talk) 01:02, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Sarah Palin "trivia". It's still a case of you're being way too subjective. There are many, many instances on the Sarah Palin page which could be construed as irrelevant from several points of view. I even suggested a place be made for this type of information in my edit, so it wasn't as though it was thrown recklessly into the article.

Henry S. Huidekoper[edit]

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Sarah Palin edits[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but your recent edit removed content from Sarah Palin. When removing text, please specify a reason in the edit summary and discuss edits that are likely to be controversial on the article's talk page. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the text has been restored, as you can see from the page history. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia, and if you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. Blogs generally aren't reliable sources but editorial ones from reliable sources such as CBS news are. Please dont be so quick with the undo link. Rtphokie (talk) 17:31, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[replied on his talk page] "Instead of dropping a vandalism notice on my talk page, you might have just left me a message. Your edit was sourced by a Marketwatch blog citing the Huffington Post citing a video of unknown provenance. WP:BLP standards mean we must indeed be quick to undo edits that don't meet its sourcing requirements.
Should we disagree again, I hope we can discuss the matter without the use of vandal templates. Coemgenus 17:36, 3 September 2008 (UTC)"[reply]
