Hi Dave, thanks for your comments and constructive criticism on the electrical sensitivity page. I have written a long reply which you may be interested to look at on the discussion page there. Will be interesting to see what people come up with. I guess we will both have a bit of a POV on this one :-) As a matter of fact I have never been an anti-mast campaigner (it seems totally illogical to me that people shout about masts when they walk round all the time with mobile phones pressed to their heads - what about the inverse square law?!), but unfortunately people with severe hypersensivity to EM waves will be the one group of people who can be affected (and fortunately it is so far a very rare condition at the severe level - I hope it remains that way). Funnily enough I am also from Portsmouth - Cosham to be exact (so have contributed a new page on that which should hopefully be less controversial!). No listed buildings there that I can think of (the two most interesting ones were sadly demolished when I was a child - it was the Tricorn and Portsdown Park era). I am now based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Happy wiki-ing. Play up Pompey! :-( Ian. Hyperman 42 01:11, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments, Ian. It's true that with my job, I guess I'm by no means the most neutral source either. :) Though I don't work in a technical field or radio planning, I do have some interest in keeping up with news of the latest research.
My concern with the alleged health implications of electrical appliances is the question of, by what means and due to what cause (technical or biological), is the health effect supposed to actually occur? Would it be due to possible thermal heating of the affected area (where most research has previously concentrated), or is due to a particular wavelength or frequency interacting with the body in some way? And if so, how? Or by some other means? Until some sort of mechanism by which illness could be caused is identified (and various campaign groups cite different causes), I find it difficult to accept that there is a scientific basis for the symptoms people claim to suffer.
I used to live in Hilsea as a child before moving to Fareham - perhaps I should follow your lead and write a page on the area :) Another one to add to the work list...

durham21 Link

Hi,

You changed my external link of durham21.co.uk on the Durham University page, saying that the 21 is not italicised on the site. This is certainly true for the main page, but if you check the about page then you will see that it is italicised here. Just explaining my choice, I don't suppose it really matters that much though. cBuckley (TalkContribs 19:23, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Erm, indeed, you appear to be correct. Inconsistency from d21 - there's a surprise. :) I must admit, I've never seen it italicised like that before, and I don't think I've ever seen it in general use like that. I suspect the current masthead is more recent than the last time the 'About' page was updated. Perhaps it's an internal preference amongst d21 people - though, as you say, it's a minor issue. :) Change it back if you want, but I think personally it's clearer non-italicised. Wondered if you might be interested in helping

Hi, I've recently been expanding Town and country planning in the United Kingdom quite a bit and have started a subcategory called [Category:United Kingdom Planning Law]. I've really written up a bit of a skeleton for this area of planning. The planning acts, the new planning structure, PPS's, all those bloody new abbreviations LDF,LDD,RSS etc.etc. So far the majority of it are stubs and I was wondering if someone like yourself, with more of a planning background than myself might be interested in lending a hand in some way. Most of the articles so far are pretty dry statements of fact(I think) and could do with some context, structure/re-structure, debate, proof reading etc.etc. I'm a complete novice at Wikipedia and sure there's a heap of no-no's I've committed (Posting direct to talk pages?!?). Please let me know if your interested or not. Many thanks Russ --User:McginnlyUser talk:Mcginnly--Mcginnly 22:21, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Page Blanking

On 07-Apr, you blanked Moseley and Kings Heath. Blanking pages is generally considered a bad idea. I've changed this to redirect to Moseley and Kings Heath Ward. If this was the result of a broken edit, you may wish to make the correct edits. If you believe the redirect should be deleted, please follow the redirect portion of the deletion procedures. If you believe an article should be written instead of the redirect, please write a stub. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 18:56, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment. You are quite right that I blanked the page for Moseley and Kings Heath; that was because the page was only a redirect, which was incorrectly going to the wrong target; therefore, it was to break the redirect. At the same time, I proposed a request for move and rename of Moseley and Kings Heath Ward, to the former. This is so that the naming convention for Birmingham wards can be preserved. I hope this is satisfactory for you, cheers. DWaterson 21:33, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
The intent & desired outcome is more than satisfactory. Instead of blanking, I would have changed the redirect while the move request is processed to avoid anyone being confused by landing at a blank page. -- JLaTondre 21:52, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
OK, I'll bear that in mind for the future. Thanks for your suggestion. DWaterson 21:59, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Portsmouth twin towns

Thanks for clarifying these. I felt the sister cities should get a mention; it's good to have them properly labelled. —Serein 21:58, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Geography/Durham

I noticed that you went to Durham and are in town planning. I wonder - did you do geography there? If so how did you get into town planning? How long ago did you graduate and did you find the degree relevant at all? Cheers. --Robdurbar 22:13, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Your Edit to Sandy Thom

Sorry, i did not understand it, could you explain it to me on my talk page please. --Joshuarooney2006 13:22, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

see CFD for category:MPs of the United Kingdom House of Commons, by Parliament and subcategories. Your comments would be welcome. --BrownHairedGirl 17:03, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

I've noticed similar spam in other articles of places in the Beaconsfield area (thebestof.beaconsfield link). I challen ged the person adding it and was told that it was a legitimate information source. As a more experienced user, would you say this link is useful or spam? -- Roleplayer 16:05, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your response. I have removed similar links that I have seen from two other articles: Slough and London Borough of Richmond. -- Roleplayer 23:07, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Our Mutual Friend

The tenacity of this guy is incredible! Reading some of his rants, I seriously think he might be mentally ill. At the very least, he has an inflated sense of self-worth given that he writes articles about himself in the third person (see Brighton talk page for URL). The worst thing is that it is virtually impossible to prove sockpuppetry because of his use of differing IP addresses. Gsd2000 23:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Shimgray

Oops - I got a bit overzealous there and didn't realise that he had only merged content from another article, rather than specifically linking to the website of the individual in question. Thanks for spotting and removing - the last thing I want to do is accuse innocent contributor of sockpuppetry. Gsd2000 01:41, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

David Cameron

Please don't revert the wording of the sentence in the David Cameron article about the Bullingdon Club a third time. The sentence you have now twice altered was one settled on after extensive discussion back at the time DC was first elected. I think it is important to present a fair and balanced view of David Cameron's past - accusing people who are merely trying to keep the article balanced of "POV pushing" is excessively rude. --SandyDancer 17:15, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Lancashire

I'm sure all the places listed in the Lancashire template include areas which lie in the traditional county. Where only part of a district lies in the traditional county I have noted it brackets. Which of the places in the ceremonial county box need altering? §Wenslet 16:15, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

Shakeel Goulthorp on Coventry

Shakeel Goulthorp is also listed on the Bedworth page, so its a bit moot if he should be in Coventry also, but he is pretty well known so I'm reverting your recent deletion of him. Just saying "who" isn't sufficient explanation for the deletion. MarkThomas 10:38, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Klute

No idea!

I'm really not sold on the idea it's important enough to be mentioned in the main article - it really isn't in any way a major feature of the city, or a landmark, or anything. Come to think of it, having an article at all doesn't really seem sensible - it's unsourced and mostly unsourceable... Shimgray | talk | 22:13, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

University of Durham Palatinate Purple

I simply copied the colour Palatinate Purple from the colour at the bottom of the Durham University logo display at the right side of the Wikipedia article. Keraunos 11:52, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

There are two refs in the leisure section which contradict each other. One says Staines of London, the other says he's in Ireland. Have we any idea which of these two will be suing Wikipedia for libel?

David Cameron

Just a note to say good work on sorting out the references on the David Cameron page - a real improvement! --SandyDancer 20:18, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Gyro Monorail

This article concentrates on explaining how this type of monorail works, which implies that it does, in fact, work. Indeed, it does state that all three pioneers built full scale prototypes, and Brennan's machine is depicted in the picture. Please take the trouble to read the article, before passing comment.

As far as depth of the analysis is concerned, believe me, this is probably as accessible as it gets, the source material is much worse. After all, we are talking about the dynamics of gyroscopes; a subject which trained professional engineers flinch at.

Making it accessible to the general reader is not an easy task - it becomes either so bland as to say nothing of value, or presents a mass of mathematical formulae and gobbledegook. I suggest you look at some of the physics or maths articles for this other extreme. This explains in prose, what a few lines of calculus would demonstrate.

I do not agree with the principle of restricting ourselves to the 'what' of a subject, it is legitimate to stray into 'why' and 'how'. Otherwise all we are left with are lists of phrases a parrot could recite, rather than real knowledge Gordon Vigurs 09:30, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

I am moving the article back to where it was as it is about the whole company, not just the ferry. Unisouth 17:22, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

If you have been to see the website, it clearly states at the top - Gosport Ferry Company Ltd. I think the website is down at the moment but it will be at www.gosportferry.co.uk . It is about the whole entity not just the ferry service, so it will remain at the original article namespace. Unisouth 10:08, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
The comapny that is part of that company is the original title of that article. Why dont you wait until the website is back up then we make a decision. It isn't a suitable alternative as it clearly states it just about the ferry. It is about the cruises, tours and the ferry. And to a lesser extent - the pontoons themselves. You can type gosport ferry in and will go to that article so you dont have to remember the full title. What more do you want? Unisouth 10:31, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

David Cameron photo

I've added a small comment but I'm not sure if it's in the right format. It was actually taken on an acquaitance's camera and then e-mailed to me so I only know that its a Canon camera but not what model etc. Hope that's good enough. Land of Hope and Glory 13:33, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Referring to {{Replaceable fair use disputed}} you remarked. Can you add your input to the talk page? It's now the article's only image and I am not wanting to have it deleted. I came and tagged it with a few details after seeing the same picture, but credited, published with a newspaper obituary and inconspicuously watermarked 'AP' on-line. If all angles are covered, it might stay. —Leatheristough 04:22, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Re your recent changes. I think you will find that all song titles should be shown as "All You Need Is Love", whilst all album titles are illustrated as Rubber Soul, as per the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Hope this helps for the future. Regards,

You are doing a great job at improving this article. I have detected that you are a conservative yourself (I may be wrong) and therefore I am all the more impressed that you are a genuinely neutral editor who is making the article far, far better. --SandyDancer 01:27, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Neutral is he? So why the frenzy to remove the Bullingdon photograph, then? 66.46.239.3 21:35, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
