Below is a copy of the email I've sent:

"Hi, Thanks for your email about the external links I removed from the "James Boswell" and "An Account of Corsica" articles. I had not been 100% sure myself about their removal, so after I received your email, I double checked with someone who has much greater experience than I do concerning this. Yunshui has agreed with my removal of them and also helped by pointing out the Wikipedia policies regarding this.

I have a problem with date formatting in the template "cite journal" on the page Gian_Paolo_Borghetti, section Essays ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gian_Paolo_Borghetti#Essays ). I'm trying to refer to essays which were serialised in magazines, where I know when the series started but not when it ended. I'm using date parameters such as

|date=From N°39 (15 février 1867) onwards

and

|date=From 15 May 1868

which are not accepted by the system, so I get the error message "Check date values in: |date=". I've looked at Template:Cite journal, Help:Citation Style 1 and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers, but I can't find any way of entering a date range with a known beginning and an unknown ending. Surely I'm not the first person to want to do this? Any help would be very much appreciated :-). Diquadeimonti (talk) 21:19, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the "date=" parameter is quite the best choice for what you intend. "From N°39 (15 février 1867) onwards" seems more about the issues, not about the dates, for example (ignoring for a moment that it's French, too). Were those essays really so long that a single issue didn't hold the entire essay? Then it may ultimately be easiest not to use a citation template but to do it manually and to provide full dates and other bibliographical details for all issues that hold parts of the essay, not just the first. Other than that, I can only suggest the use of "c." with the one date you know; that should work. Help:Citation Style_1#Dates provides a little more information, but unfortunately doesn't give a more satisfactory answer to your question. Huon (talk) 22:13, 13 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the essays in question were long enough to be published in dozens of consecutive issues! I don't have details of all the issue numbers or dates, and even if I did it would be a bit too much information for the page. "c." would fit in the template, but isn't appropriate here (I know the first issue details precisely, but the last not at all). In the end I followed your advice and removed the "cite journal" template altogether, replacing it with manual text (now why didn't I think of that?!). Thanks for your help!

Gian Paolo Borghetti[edit]

Categories don't count towards the total for the template, and it's only linked from two articles in article space. The template was added automatically by AWB, and I'm not sure what its threshold is for calling an article an "orphan", but I would suspect it was identified as such because it's only linked to two articles and not more. --Ser Amantio di Nicolao^{Che dicono a Signa?}_{Lo dicono a Signa.} 19:52, 7 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
