Sorting films

Hey Doc, glad to see you made a start with your user page! Just wanted to let you know that in sorting films, we ignore all articles in the beginning of a title (English and foreign). Have a sunny day! (Canada where? -if I may) Hoverfish Talk 20:31, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Naturally, I was in brain-neutral when I added that. I'm an Ontarian. Doctor Sunshine talk 20:08, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Actors and Filmmakers

Hey see my proposals at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals#Actor and Filmmakers and the main WP Film and Biography talk page. Know anybody who is interested? Actors and all film people articles need a body on wikipedia to upkeep them asthey need more focus -it would be a part of Biogrpahy and Film. If you are interested or know somebody who would be, please let them know and whether you think it is a good progession for the project or not. Please leave your views at the council or biogrpahy main talk page. THanks ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 14:48, 19 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dumbland

I don't know if Dumbland is really appropriate for the Film Wikiproject seeing as it was made for the Internet (and presented as episodes so technically it was an Internet TV series). Do you know if there's perhaps a related project for webfilms/webseries? 23skidoo 02:35, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I was thinking of them as short films but they are more webisodes. I've added an Internet wikiproject. The categories may still need to be fixed. Doctor Sunshine talk 02:58, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's a better wikiproject - thanks for making the change. We'll have to see what categories are applicable. 23skidoo 03:43, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Model page for WikiProject Film Bio started

I have started a page model for the new project User:Ernst Stavro Blofeld/Film biography page model. Please note that it is still in its infancy stage and the templates have not been fully completed. THis is how I'd like the page to look but with an adaption of the task side plate further to incorprate film and biography goals on wikipedia. What do you think as a start? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "I've been expecting you" 16:19, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great work there. For just a start it's already pretty huge. Well done. I might suggest a Production Designer section, that's a fairly key position. Otherwise, it looks like you're on the right track. Keep at it. Doctor Sunshine talk 10:20, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A question of inclusion

Hi, I am planning to formulate this for a more general discussion, but it's best to hear some opinions first. We are compiling film lists by country, and some editors including Blofeld copy whole dumps from imdb and try to enter them all in the lists, which become like telephone catalogues in this way. Notability-wise it could be that every film that has ever been screened is acceptable. For having useful lists, however, this is very questionable IMO. Should we make lists for "most notable films" only, or should we get listed every last film ever screened? Hoverfish Talk 23:54, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to agree with you. I think it's a big enough job just getting every film with a wikipedia article on the appropriate lists. Really, who knows how many IMDb entries are erroneous, or duplicates or fakes. IMDb is fine to get started but I think we should only be listing films that can be confirmed by multiple reliable sources (which excludes the IMDb). One thing I was wondering, maybe it's possible to automate the process at least partially, maybe a bot-savvy individual could set something up to rip information from the infoboxes of articles in various film categories. I'm sure it would still need manual monitoring but it should speed things up, if it is possible. Doctor Sunshine talk 00:29, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

From the little I've read about bots I doubt such "milking of data" is a programmable bot option, but I may be wrong. I have done the List of French films by hand from scratch and it took me only 3-4 days. As you see I have included all the films with articles in wikipedia only (but am open for missing important films), and at one point I had to ask Blofeld to stop entering massive amounts of films without an article (mostly shorts of the early period). He did so out of kindness, but just "for now". I am uneasy as long as this issue is not cleared out by consensus. The Lists of films without article are there for all the background work. To my cautioning about copying IMDb dumps there, it was promissed that these work-lists would first be filtered for notability and only important films would hit the main namespace lists. I never learned how or if the filtering happened. I think mostly not. Please take a look at what is about to happen in the List of East German films. Also Aussiepete did something similar in the List of Australian films, but with a more crtical touch and now we still have to do some filtering to get out (or merge in single entries) some unimportant films. Surely it's mostly positive contributions, but this point remains open. Hoverfish Talk 08:44, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually they don't. The only example of this is the List of East German films where somebody had compiled a scruffy list from imdb that I tried to quickly cleanup by putting them into the formal tables!!! I certainly don't want every unotable film in the lists!!! I would like the see most feature films in the lists but not four minute shorts, or one of films, or unotable tv films etc. The major film producers have prodcued a massive number of films though! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" "S.P.E.C.T.R.E" 14:56, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Film genre/Cinematic genre

Hi Doctor Sunshine, Please help me to move the page properly. The academic term is 'film genre". Also the category is "category:film genre." In addition the common usage term is "film genre." Google has 574,000 hits for "film genre" and 27,000 hits for "cinematic genre." I have a degree from U.S.C. film school and I promise this is the right term. So please help me. Fair use exemptions

Regarding your post at Today's Featured Article:

Take a look at the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Fair use exemptions. The movement to keep fair use images off of the Main Page is pretty strong right now. I don't agree with them, but I won't expand on that here, save to say that nearly all of the free-content-on-the-Main-Page supporters are actually missing an important point — one that causes our content to nevertheless remain decidedly unfree.

Also look at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Kat Walsh's statement, which was designed to clear up our media licensing policies. It's part of a move towards finally cracking down on freer media licensing, the guidelines which have actually been around for quite a while. There's admittedly a paragraph in there about fair use exemptions, but nobody ever allowed that to get in their way. — Rebelguys2 talk 06:21, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I've already seen read through both of those and commented at the former. The movement may be be strong right now but it wasn't strong enough to remove the exemption, and discussion's pretty much died out on that talk page. Anyway, I see the original fair use image is back (for now) so I'm happy. Doctor Sunshine talk 06:39, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Beijing Bicycle

Thanks for your review of the article Beijing Bicycle and your suggestions. However, there are a few things i'd like to clarify:

  1. The Interpretation section clearly opens with "According to Elizabeth Write of Senses of Cinema..." The readers can then refer to the References section for the appropriate link to source.
  2. As for the inclusion of both a Notes and References section, i'm just following the guideline in Wikipedia:Citing sources, specifically Maintaining a separate "References" section in addition to "Notes". i know currently the Notes section of Beijing Bicycle is not overly long, but it is just wasteful of time and effort to arbitrate exactly when it is considered "too long". So i chose to do it the way you saw.
  3. Similarly, the flag icons used in the infobox, in my humble opinion, look fine for now. If i may let out a little of my pussy complaints here, Wikipedia is way full of differing opinions and fast-shifting conventions for pretty much anyone less than the hardcorest Wikipedians to follow. i just want to focus on providing accurate and helpful contents.

It's just coincidental that i happen to disagree with all of your views in this particular case. i don't mean any hostility or offence at all. :) --Plastictv 23:04, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No problem and no offense taken. I'd encourage anyone to take any advice from any source with a grain of salt. But while you're here, you might consider streamlining the notes so that they only include the author and year, see B Movie for an example. And even if you've stated the source's name in the interpretation section (which I did see but it didn't register with me, for some reason) a citation at the end of the paragraph would be helpful. Otherwise, it's your baby and you've got my blessing to proceed as you see fit. Doctor Sunshine talk 23:26, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page Image

Sorry, but nowhere does it say that Fair Use images may be used on the Main Page, and the new board policy to limit fair use precludes its inclusion there. You might want to go back to see the discussion over Scooby Doo when it was a featured article. Danny 03:01, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is not a small sect of editors, nor was their attempt unsuccessful. As Makemi pointed out, this is a new policy, in line with efforts to reduce Fair Use. In this particular instance, there is a reasonable alternative, the image of Warhol himself. Its use on the main page is much more in keeping with the concept of a free-content encyclopedia, which we have always been stri9ving to create. Danny 03:14, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Shintaro Katsu in Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Yearheader template

Hi the talk page banners yes that would be fine thanks for asking. I agree that the size before it was difficult to see - but I thought the colour was too pale. I suggested that color to Hoverfish originally but as I have been working extreme on the lists the darker colour seemed bolder. As the current film reels will be dleeted I have been reofrmatting the list templates to WiseKwais approval with the film flag icons ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 20:59, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I was just playing about with the colour on the header -. Yes the full extent of the countries is now mapped out that world list template looks grand doesn't it -I feel quite proud of it!!! The next task will be to add all the missing titles (there are tens of thousands missing!!) and fill in the details by country. See List of Argentine films:1950s and List of Italian films: 1960s and List of British films:1950s and List of Bollywood films for how they are developing. Many of the list have now developed by decade on seperate pages - in about a year we should have acomplete list of films from each country in order by country including the US ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 21:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - this should be the only site in the world that documents all film history across the world and this like no other has the potential to do it! Luckily several users have been doing the lists for me in places. I'll let you in on a secret I want to do the same with American films see American films of 1940 for instance but this will take an incredible amount of effort. (I didn't tell anyone in case they disapproved) - I need help and by tens of people!!!! You see the idea though. I would think all the ists are very encyclopedic summarizing periods of film history ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 21:23, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The american films 1939 to 1943 are up and running but the others need formatting. I am gradually adding the years from the 1944 but I haven't the time to complete all the details yet -it'll look fantastic when finished I promise! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 21:27, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See American films of 1940, American films of 1941, American films of 1942, American films of 1943. (I thought the naming was better). Of course I want the studio to be noted too ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 21:36, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that is in its infancy but should develop very quickly. The pink is a little bright I'll pale it a bit ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 21:43, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks -I am hoping someone'll give me the film barnstar - I haven't had it yet! Your're in America? I'm off to bed in aminute. All the best and thanks for your support and encouragment. Regards ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Expecting you" Contribs 21:52, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cloud-hidden, Whereabouts Unknown

Hi, I'm head first into reading lately. It could be I'll be doing an article on a book, not sure. Also I got burned out with the general fight on categorization and want to wait until some undisputed pattern emerges, whether due to software progress or to some prevailing logic. Another thing is the uncontrollable growth of navigations and templates and a general ugliness I don't wish to start arguing about. So I'm giving it time and see how others react, what they like and what not, what they care for and what not, and I may resume somewhat later. Hoverfish Talk 20:10, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use disputed for Image:Il Posto DVD.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Il Posto DVD.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 02:23, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, there's something I wanted to ask you about the trivia question of the Suzuki article. It says: "Suzuki is the only director to be commonly referred to by his given name, Seijun", but my Japanese friends always call Kitano Takeshi simply Takeshi... Do you trust the source for that info (Tony Rains)? Skarioffszky 14:31, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of trivia

I undid your removal of triva, and have now renamed it to Miscellaneous Facts. if you want to discuss this please contact me on my talk page Compwhizii 19:42, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, i now understand, unundoing! Compwhizii 20:04, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Branded to Kill on front page

I just logged on and noticed Branded to Kill on Wiki's front page. Congratulation, Doc! Great job! Also, thanks for putting together such an interesting article on such an interesting film!. Dekkappai 00:20, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Barnstar of High Culture
In recognition of taking Branded to Kill all the way from DYK to GA to FA and making the article of the day on December 3, 2007, it gives me great pleasure to bestow this Barnstar of High Culture on Doctor Sunshine. BrokenSphereMsg me 16:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This was only the second Suzuki film I've seen (Youth of the Beast was the first). I have to say that I didn't like it as much at first since it's such a trip and the latter is more straightforward, but your writing about it has made me appreciate it more. I remember looking at the article after watching Branded to Kill and it being quite basic, but it's since shot up there thanks to your efforts. Besides, you can't beat Misako for the femme fatale appeal. ;) BrokenSphereMsg me 16:55, 3 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen Tokyo Drifter. That there looks like a good candidate for you to work your magic on as well. Thought Phoenix Tetsu's rendition of the theme song was pretty catchy. I'm still puzzling though as to why he decided to abandon the singer in the end and continue his wandering. BrokenSphereMsg me 04:52, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
