Ghorfa stub choice

Hi there... I see you changed the stub on Ghorfa to read "This article about an African building or structure is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it." I'm not totally sure if that's the right stub, since a ghorfa is merely an architectural term to describe a type of building. The stub seems to imply that it's a specific building, rather than a more generic term. Does that make sense? Acarvin 17:54, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Castelvecchio museum

First off great photos. One thing I am concerned about though is the attribution of the installation to Richard Meier. Are you sure that it isn't instead Il giardino dei passi perduti by Peter Eisenman? DVD+ R/W 20:28, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

Oh, geez, yes, it is. Thanks Dogears 20:31, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

  • I've made the correction in the caption, can you rename the image you uploaded? DVD+ R/W 20:42, 22 January 2006 (UTC)
    • Making more edits to for flow, too. Dogears
    • ? Is there an easy way to change the image filename ?
      • My guess is that you can't, you'd have to upload under a new image & get the old one deleted (or blank it somehow). Canthusus 08:59, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Categories

Hi - I've undone a couple of your categorisations. I think you got the wrong thing in your paste buffer & inadvertently put the National Police Memorial and the Millau Viaduct as attractions in Tyne & Wear! I presume you meant to describe them as Norman Foster Buildings, but I leave it to you to do that. I also took out the categorisation of Sainsbury as a Norman Foster Building - this might be appropriate for one of their buldings, but not the whole company. Cheers! Bollards

Hi Dogears. Thanks for the rather magnificent bollard photo - I've popped it into the bollard article. Might mean I'll have to take out my lovely photo of Mallaig Harbour, but yours is definitely more illustrative. I'll keep my eyes out for interesting buildings, but I'm mainly London based & London buildings tend to be pretty well covered. But I'll browse the categories for photo-less articles.

Wikipedia style is to bold the subject in the summary (preferably the first sentence), and not thereafter. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:46, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

List of Architecture Schools

I'm not adverse to a separate list of "notable" architecture schools; my main goal was to clean up the list and make it more consistent. A separate list should probably just be officially devoted to listing as many architecture schools as possible, because everyone's going to want to add their own pet school and such a list wouldn't really be valuable enough to argue over otherwise. However, I think it would be more ideal to have a section talking about the most significant schools specifically in relation to their contribution to architecture and the profession; e.g., Ecole des Beaux Arts in the 1800s and early 1900s, MIT in the late 1800s, Harvard in the 1940s-50s, Berkeley and the AA in the 1960s, Cooper Union in the late 1970s, Columbia in the 1990s, etc. Gku 03:40, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Christopher Wren

You recently added Trinity College, Cambridge to the list of Christopher Wren buildings. Unfortunately, the image you tagged is of a building that predates Wren by around 3 centuries. I have moved the tag to a more suitable image, but you might want to make similar checks to other buildings that you have tagged as belonging to the category. Bluap 12:48, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

I think that the tags on the buildings are useful (for Architects, definitely), which is why I tagged the Wren Library - the part of Trinity College which was actually designed by Wren.

Template:Manhattan

Can you take a look at Template:Manhattan. Someone made a change to the template, and he believes his changes look better. All 5 boroughs use the same template, but he only changed one. You can compare it to Template:Staten Island. If you like his better, we can change all the others. If you dont think his is an improvement, please revert it back to the original template for me. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) 01:23, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Recat of Racquet Club? category syntax

Dogears,

I neither support nor oppose a move to make county sub-categories of historic places in New York. However, if you do, I think it should be called:

Eoghanacht talk 21:32, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Historic places by county

I think it would be appropriate to create a Category:Registered Historic Places in New York by county, and put all the county lists in that category. That would free up the Category:Registered Historic Places in New York for real articles. If needed, at some point, county subcategories (i.e. Category:Registered Historic Places in New York County, New York) could be added under the "by county" category. Obviously, the "List of ... in New York County, New York" article would then be placed in the appropriate county category, with a sortkey to appear at the top of the list.

I am also tempted to create a Category:Registered Historic Places by location and put all the state (and D.C., and Micronesia, etc.) categories under that. Currently the other subgcategories (like "National Historic Sites of the United States") get totally lost.

Something to sleep on, I guess. — Eoghanacht talk 01:57, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

FYI, I tried to made a mod to the list of Kentucy, and came up with a "File Way Too Large" announcement. Rather than make dozens of "by county" lists, I broke it up a different way. See: Category:Registered Historic Places in Kentucky. I thought you might be interested, or may have a better way. — Eoghanacht talk 16:01, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
I did not engage in the light sources discussion at all, so your not was confusing on that count. As for the Nat'l Register stuff, feel free to mod anything I have done. I am not directly interested in it, actually -- it is all indirect because a pet project of mine is National Memorial and Historic Site articles, all on the Nat'l Register. However, I would use "counties A-C" rather than "Counties A-C", and put each list in the home category with a "|* county name" sortkey as I did in for the Kentucky ones.

Light sources template

Thanks for comments. Light sources template needs carbon arc lamp. Better to use "Sources of light and lighting"; more broad than artificial light sources, "Lighting and Lamps". Forward slash, as in "Sources of light / lighting:", looks messy. Need to group by mechanism: "plasma excited by electricity", "black body radiators", "electron excited" (i.e. tritium-phosphor), "chemical light", "glowing filaments", "bioluminescence", etc. Existing "Sources of light / lighting:" box fairly good, but it needs some work: "natural /prehistoric light sources" is inappropriate term. Best to combine your work with this box.Anthony717 21:54, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Light bulb to Lamp (electrical component)

The problem was that "lamp", as defined in the article, includes many things that are not "light bulbs". While "light bulb" is the most common name for an incandescent light bulb, it is not the most common name for everything covered in the article. Since there is already an article for incandescent light bulb, it makes more sense to redirect light bulb to that, and have a separate article for the generic concept of a replaceable lighting module, independent of the actual technology used. "Lamp" was the best name I could think of for this generic concept, but that conflicts with the new disambiguation page (and creates confusion with the light fixture). Lamp (electrical component) seemed like the best available page name.

If this solution is not acceptable, another approach would be to remove the article altogether, merging the information about each type of lamp into the main article for that type of lamp. The disambiguation page at lamp would then contain a list of those main articles (Incandescent light bulb, Fluorescent lamp, Gas discharge lamp, Arc lamp, etc. ), instead of a link to a single article that summarizes all the types of "lamp" (in the sense of a lighting component.) This would mean, though, that there would be no way to create a valid link to an article on this generic concept rather than a specific type of lamp (since one should not link to disambiguation pages.)

If you have other ideas for how to resolve this issue, I would certainly be interested to hear them. Perhaps there is a better name for this concept? Or some other solution I have missed?--Srleffler 16:42, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Low on pictures

Hi Dogears, as you know the selected pictures tank is running low. Would you help me pick a nomination from a few that I recently uploaded? I was considering one of the Seattle Central Library, and am not sure which (I uploaded 9). They are thumbnailed at the bottom of my user page. If you don't pick one I will self nominate one, probably the street perspectival view with the yellow tree on the left. Any pictures you've taken that you'd like to nominate go ahead, or if you have any in mind feel free. I will nominate your Eisenman Castleveccio installation one of these days (I used it in the deconstructivism article if you don't mind). I would like to see others that you've taken, too. Hope all is well. D. DVD+ R/W 03:03, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Re: Fleur de lis

Also, remember that it is a good idea to use the {{Architecture SA}} and {{Architecture SI}} tags on article, and image talkpages, to get more feedback. DVD+ R/W 03:35, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Deadend pages

Hi, I saw your edits on Wikipedia:Dead-end pages. Good job, the more people working on it, the better since that list is getting huge. Btw, you don't have to cross out articles you have done, just remove them from the list. Much easier. Garion96 (talk) 00:51, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Template pages

Just out interest, why did you move all of the nowiki (copypaste) content out of Template:Infobox Modern building into the talk page? Other existing templates eg. Template:Infobox Bridge seem to have it in article space. Is there some policy I should be aware of?--Mcginnly 11:47, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

  • Thanks for your encouragement re. Arch. Portal etc. DVD RW and myself have been collaborating on Expressionist architecture. I've been waiting for a book on German expressionism from amazon that has just arrived. So I'll be writing about that aspect in detail this weekend. Another subject heading within the article is the work of the Amsterdam school which was broadly contemporaneous to German expressionism. The Amsterdam School has it's own article but is in need of expansion. Once that's complete we can write a summary and investigate the cross-influences between Germany and the Netherlands within the Expressionist architecture article. Would you like to look at the Amsterdam School?--Mcginnly 08:33, 22 June 2006 (UTC)
Thank you for your support in my RfA, which ended with the result of (74/0/0). If there is anything I can help with feel free to ask. Also, if there is anything I am doing wrong, please point that out as well. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Highest regards, DVD+ R/W 01:46, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Concerning your Portal Proposal

I noticed you proposed Portal:Historic preservation and it was summarily blocked by those who opposed it. This appears to have been in violation of Wikipedia's policy Wikipedia is not censored. Therefore I've nominated the portal approval process page for deletion. The discussion and voting page can be found at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Portal/Proposals. --Transhumanist 16:01, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject:Architecure Peer Review proposal

I'm trying to build a consensus for a Wikiproject Peer review process. I've opened a discussion page here. Would you like to comment? Would you be prepared to take part in the peer review process? Many thanks. --Mcginnly | Chinwag 12:20, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

IG Farben Building FAC

Also, I posted the IG Farben Building on the FAC on the 17th July. It currently has a support consensus, but only from 4 people. I'd be more comfortable with a stronger consensus and was wondering if you might be prepared to comment on the article? Many thanks. --Mcginnly | Chinwag 12:20, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Portal:Architectural Heritage

Hi dogears, great work on the Architecture portal by the way. Personally, I think in the fullness of time this is a pretty good idea, but not yet (but go ahead if that's what floats your boat). I worry about portals being created and then not maintained (By the way if yourself and DVD would like me to shoulder some of the burden rotating the architecture portal SA's and SI's let me know). Case in point really are the SI and SA's - it seems the 3 of us are the only ones who ever propose stuff or comment - is another portal a better idea than enriching the current portal with the content you describe? I've added the suggestion in any event to Wikipedia:WikiProject Architecture#Daughter projects.

I've been trying to whip up some support for the wikiproject because my view is that an active and vibrant wikiproject creates the necessary interest and dedication necessary to support Portals. My current concerns at the moment are to get more people to sign up. Longer term goals will hopefully then follow such as splitting out some of the subjects that currently come under the archictecture category that don't really belong there, such as Civil and Structural engineering, Landscape architecture, Construction etc. We've already done this with urban studies and planning and this seems to be taking off slowly. Do you know anyone else who might be interested in participating in the project?

I've recently been shirking my responsibilities on Expressionist architecture which I'd agreed to collaborate on with DVD/RW. I'm hoping to really get stuck into it soon. After that how would you feel about collaborating on something. I'm thinking of either expanding the Caernarvon castle entry (I was there the other week and had forgotten how amazing it is). If you fancied something more contemporary the National wildflower centre in Liverpool doesn't yet have an entry and it's quite and interesting building or Imperial War Museum North for a rare (and good quality) Libeskind building in the UK?--Mcginnly | Natter 23:31, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

While I'm here......would you like to comment on the proposal to start a 'in-house' peer review process for the wikiproject? You can comment here. The idea is to run an identical process to the standard peer review which may run a little better as the architecture wikiproject people are hopefully more clued up about content as well as typos, format, referencing etc.etc. that usually become the sole concerns of peer review and FAC?--Mcginnly | Natter 23:37, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Portal Architecture

Regarding rotating the portal - no problem - I'll do it tomorrow. PS I don't know why but I've got it in my head you might be a brit - if you are and live in london - would you fancy taking a pic of the Idea Store in Whitechapel - it's been nominated for the stirling prize and I won't be in the smoke until late september. regards --Mcginnly | Natter 18:07, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Would you like to do the rotation of the Portal this weekend? The extensive work you've done there looks great. —Dogears 01:54, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll rotate the Portal this Friday before a vacation to "medieval Disneyland" – any photos you need in Venice? Thanks for the compliment (and the interesting term for London). I live in Manhattan, which means I can get busy now with a new, borrowed camera to take photos of new starchitect buildings. Happy to run down any requests here. Cheers. —Dogears 00:40, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
I have some requests for pics in Manhattan: LVMH tower, the Austrian Cultural Forum, and the American Folk Art Museum. I think they are all in midtown. Have fun in Venice. DVD+ R/W 00:44, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Can do, on return. Grazie —dogears (talk • contribs)
OOO - Could you get some pics of Thomas Heatherwicks store?[1][2]--Mcginnly | Natter 08:05, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for moving the conversation. I've added the Lonchamps store to the list below. NYC is finally catching up with the rest of the world with some interesting, new architecture. -- Dogears 02:22, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
