Mike Arnesen (born June 16, 1983) is a American hardcore punk guitarist[1], marketer, blogger[2], and conference speaker[3]. He is the senior SEO analyst at SwellPath, a Portland, OR marketing agency, and was the primary songwriter for and member of California Redemption and Future Primitive.

Personal Life[edit]

Arnesen is originally from Thousand Oaks, California, but now resides in Portland, Oregon. Arnesen follows straight edge and vegan lifestyles and is also a self-confessed introvert[4]. In 2011, Arnesen married Shauna Shelton in Hillsboro, Oregon[5]. Arnesen is a graduate of California State University, Northridge and holds a BA in History.

Music Career[edit]

Under the alias, "Mikkei Redemption", Arnesen was the lead guitarist and primary songwriter for both Future Primitive and California Redemption. He was also a producer for LTE Records.

Arnesen first started to learn to play the guitar in 1996 when he was a Freshman at Thousand Oaks High School. After taking lessons on a rented guitar, he got his first guitar for Christmas in 1997.[6]

After playing in several garage bands, Arnesen joined what would be his first significant band in 1999. During his time with the band, Mute, Arnesen explored the guitar and began feeling out his musical style. After two years in Mute, Arnesen left the group, citing conflicts in musical creativity.[7] It was also during this time that Arnesen began to study classical guitar and symphonic composition at Moorpark College.

In the following years, Arnesen founded California Redemption with former members of Mute. With this band, Arnesen would record his first studio album and finally fully exercise his musical creativity. As California Redemption toured and released albums, Arnesen formed side band, Future Primitive with friend, Ryan Power. Both bands would go on to tour the United States and release multiple records.

Marketing Career[edit]

As Arnesen’s involvement in music began to wind down, he entered the web develop and online marketing world, starting at MySpace[8] and quickly moving on to a string of SEO and web development startups. After relocating from Los Angeles to Portland, OR in 2010, Arnesen was recruited by John Koenig and Adam Ware to head SwellPath’s SEO division[9].

Now the long-time senior SEO at the agency, Arnesen is considered by many to be a thought-leader in the industry (notably around Google Authorship[10]) and is a frequent speaker and presenter at national conferences[11][12][13][14]. In 2012, Arnesen was featured multiple times on Forbes.com in articles on blogging[15] and Google's AuthorRank[16].

In August 2012, Arnesen published a theoretical exploration of Google’s AuthorRank ("How to Prepare for AuthorRank and Get the Jump on Google") on SEOmoz. The peer-reviewed article has been read over 40,000 times (according to SEOmoz's post analytics) and has been cited by 2,063 other articles. [17].
