Hi Farragutful, I noticed you created quite a few new categories on Commons for NRHP entries. The report at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Missing commons category links keeps track of categories not linked from the lists yet. You might want to add them to make it easier to find these new categories (example edit). On User:Dudemanfellabra/AddCommonsCatLinks.js you can find a script to assist you with this. I didn't write it and haven't used it myself, but several people seem to be using it. You can enable it by adding "mw.loader.load('/w/index.php?title=User:Dudemanfellabra/AddCommonsCatLinks.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');" to User:Farragutful/common.js. Henry Lischer House

Hi Farragutful, I am a local historian in the Quad Cities and have found primary source information regarding the actual architect for the Henry Lischer house in Davenport. It was Willet Carrol and the house was constructed prior to F. G. Clausen's arrival in the U.S. I am familiar with all of the citations that connect the property to F. G. Clausen, they are all attributions. I have made a few minor edits and entries to Wikipedia, but this level of editing is beyond my ability. Would you be interested in making edits if I were to furnish you with the information I have found? Thank you for you interest in the QC.

@Lpbest: I have found enough discrepancies in Svendsen and Bowers work that nothing surprises me. Willet Carrol does make sense as the architect, and Clausen didn't design his own home. @Farragutful. Thank you for taking this on. I agree that there are numerous errors in Svendsen and Bowers work, but I cannot fault it. It was at a very early stage compiling the architectural history of Davenport. There was a great deal of oral history or legend that was simply not accurate and research tools were crude. The source for the Lischer house was actually from John Gere's index of projects of F. G. Clausen and the subsequent firms that grew out of that practice over time. There was an assumption that F. G. Clausen must surely have designed the Lischer house because he was married to Lischer's daughter, they were married in 1873. Lischer gave Clausen and his bride the house at 630 W 6th, but based on the price that Lischer paid for it, ($2,000) the house was already in existence. In the Gere index, there is no file number or date for the Lischer house project, it attributes the house to Clausen, but without any records to support that. I was not unreasonable to draw this assumption, but many of the records are missing and enormous gaps exist in the records. Anchorage-Juneau

What I probably think will happen is that Cathedral of the Holy Family will become a proto-cathedral because if its size, Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral becomes the Archdiocese seat and Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary become a co-cathedral...

@Roberto221: Possibly. A number of years back, I think when John Paul II was still alive, a significant number of Italian dioceses were merged and all of their cathedrals remained as cathedrals. Who knows what will happen here. I like your idea, and I agree with it, as I don't like a cathedral and a co-cathedral in the same city, but no one is asking my opinion! @Farragutful: Thanks for the help, as you can tell, I fought this fight before. On another note, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Anchorage-Juneau becomes official on the 17th. From what I've read, [1], we'll soon find out what happens with their 3 cathedrals..

@Roberto221: Glad to help. I actually know Jeff Grob, although it has been quite some time since I have seen him. If I were a betting man, which I'm not (and for good reason), I would say Anchorage-Juneau will end up with a cathedral and two co-cathedrals. Personally, I think that's the wrong way to go, but it has been done already in Italy after they combined numerous dioceses about 35-40 years ago. Although, in that case, they merged up to four dioceses into one. Some archdioceses lost their metropolitan status, but their diocesan bishop retains the title of archbishop. In regards to Anchorage-Juneau, I would name Holy Family a basilica in recognition of its historical importance and remove its cathedral status and then name Guadalupe the cathedral and Nativity BVM the co-cathedral. Alaska

Out of the blue, the Director of Communications for Anchorage-Juneau emailed me about changing the Coats of Arms for the Archbishop and the Archdiocese, which I did today. She also said that the new cathedral seat is Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral (Anchorage, Alaska) and that Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Juneau, Alaska) will be the Co-Cathedral. I'm waiting for a response on what's to become of Holy Family Cathedral (Anchorage, Alaska). I also asked her for an external image of Our Lady and internal image of both Our Lady and Blessed Virgin Mary. If you want, I can forward you the email.

@Roberto221: I saw on the archdiocese's Wikipedia page that someone listed Guadalupe as the cathedral and Nativity BVM as the co-cathedral and then added a reference that cited the decree. I searched for a news article reporting on the change, but I have found nothing. The various webpages for the archdiocese and the cathedrals are not helpful in that regard either. I would like to change the cathedrals Wikipedia pages, but I'm going to hold off until I can cite a reference. I guess in time... You don't need to forward the email, but I hope they send a photo(s) of the cathedral. I have no plans to visit Alaska anytime soon to get one myself! Holy Family's title of co-cathedral is transferred, which I assume means that Holy Family becomes a parish church (i.e., Holy Family Catholic Church). @Catholicdude112: Yes, based on the Papal Bull the title of "cathedral" has been transferred from Holy Family to Guadalupe so Holy Family has lost its cathedral status as it was not named a co-cathedral in the same document. (Holy Family was not previously a co-cathedral. In spite of that term, it doesn't work that way. Holy Family was the primary seat of the archbishop and Guadalupe was an additional seat.) However, it was already a parish church as all Catholic cathedrals in the US are also parish churches. Thanks for the video link, but I would still like a news article to use as a resource. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania, and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the River was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!

Former cathedrals

Since you have added so much to the List of the Cathedrals in the United States, I thought I would seek your opinion. There is inconsistency in whether former Catholic Cathedrals that still stand are included on the list. As I was adding some, I realized that one I was about to add was one (in Wilmington, NC) that IIRC someone had earlier removed, not sure if it was you. So should former Catholic cathedrals be on the list? And if some but not others, are there any identifiable criteria? (I have assumed that former cathedrals of other groups should not be listed.) @Zipcedric: It is inconsistent at best, and I wish I could give a simple answer. This is supposed to be a list of cathedrals and if it were up to me I would leave the former cathedrals off the list as they no longer function as cathedrals. However, others do not see it that way, therefore the inconsistency. I think part of the problem is that some of the formers, especially in the Catholic Church, still have the word cathedral in their title: Holy Family Old Cathedral in Anchorage or Pro-Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Newark are two examples. Others were cathedrals when the list was created: Holy Family Catholic Church in Orange, California or St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Peoria, Illinois, and yet they are still listed. Crookston Cathedral

Good one! I've sent multiple emails to them for so long just to get a picture. That's one that I can cross off my road trip for next year. I'm planning on making a short road trip this year to get St. Vincent de Paul Cathedral in Elmont, NY and an updated picture of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Syracuse, NY. • @Roberto221: For most people this one would have been a difficult get, but for me, well...I've been going to this part of Minnesota since I was two. (Actually, a couple of hours to the south.) I intended to go a couple of years ago, but I had to cut my trip short to attend a funeral. I also dropped down to Fargo after Crookston to photograph the two cathedrals there. I was thinking about going to Elmont around Labor Day on my way up to Connecticut, but it's not definite that I'm going yet so by all means get the photo. I know I'm not going to Syracuse. As for the rest, I have no plans at this time to go to any of those cities or even close to them that I could make a side trip like Crookston, but you never know. @Roberto221: I went into St. Vincent de Paul when I got the exterior pics earlier this month. It was too dark inside, there was no one around, and I had to get to Connecticut so I had to be happy with what I had. Mass was just beginning at St. Agnes in Rockville Centre when I got there, it was a Sunday, so that was a no-go from the beginning.

If you're so inclined there is a Greek Orthodox cathedral close to St. Vincent de Paul, St. Paul's, 110 Cathedral Ave, Hempstead, NY 11550. I didn't realize it was there at the time otherwise I would have gotten at least one photo for List of cathedrals in New York. Cathedral Avenue is not named for St. Paul's, but Incarnation Episcopal (Diocese of Long Island). It's a beautiful Gothic Revival church in a park-like setting just up the street. I would have liked to have seen it, but I knew I was going to be short on time so I didn't take the time. Maybe if I had I would found St. Paul's.

@Farragutful: Where do I start but by simply saying New York traffic is a BITCH. I don't know how goods and people move around the city and I'm originally from NY. I made great time zipping/speeding thru MD, DE and NJ but once I crossed the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, everything came to a screeching halt with the traffic jams. I got the pics from Brooklyn (after driving awhile looking for a place to park) then I went on to Elmont (and more traffic jams) and got those pics. Next it was onto Patterson, NJ. I saw a travel advisory sign in the Bronx that said I should be able to reach the George Washington Bridge in 84 minutes. I could have ran across the Bronx to the bridge and beat my car there, that's how backed up it was. By the time I got to Passaic, NJ it was close to 5PM and that cathedral was closed. So I went on to Bayonne, NJ for the last cathedral but I ran into more traffic jams. By this time it was nearly 6PM, so there was no way that cathedral was open so I bagged it and headed home with another traffic jam. Didn't get home until 10:45PM and I left at 6:30AM.

Hope you like the pics, Brooklyn and Paterson had my jaw hitting the floor. They're like what they say about the Grand Canyon, pictures don't do it justice.

Updated Road Trip

As you can see, I made a trip to DE/Philly Metro/PA. Cathedral of Saint Peter(Wilmington) was closed as was Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception(Ukrainian, Philadelphia) because of the holiday. Saint Joseph Pro-Cathedral(Camden) was open. From there I called up Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption(Trenton) but they were wishy-washy about it until they could contact somebody in authority. Next I called up Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena(Allentown), they were fine with it as long as I could get there before 7pm service.

I looked at my original trip and found that there are a lot of cathedrals which are within 50 miles or actually on the highway of my original trip, so this is my latest schedule:

@Roberto221: A couple of the cathedrals on your updated itinerary are now closed. Holy Name in Steubenville has been closed since 2014. They were in the process of doing a major renovation and ran into drama concerning financial mismanagement in the diocese. The bishop put the renovation on hold and as far as I can tell that's where it remains.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Parma, Ohio has also been closed. Its parish was merged with two other parishes and they use Dormition of the Mother of God in Cleveland, formerly known as St. Mary's. I'm loath to make changes to the cathedral page on Wikipedia because the eparchy stills lists St. John the Baptist as the cathedral, although it also says it is closed. It does not call Dormition the cathedral, nor does the parish website. In fact, the website still refers to the parish as St. Mary. It is possible that St. John's is still the cathedral, but not a parish church. That would be expensive for the eparchy. Very confusing. If you get to the Cleveland area you might get a photo of Dormition/St. Mary so we have one. Their website is here. Maybe everything will be sorted out by then. Road Trip

Damn Putin!!! Totally screws up my first real vacation in 21 years. Gas prices are unfavorable for me at this time even though I drive a 4 cylinder. The total miles would have been close to 9800 miles. At first, I cut out the West Coast, then a few days later the Mountain time zone. I tried to salvage the Central time zone but looking at Gas Buddy, that went out the window also. Best I can do is to finish up the NY/Philadelphia metro areas. @Roberto221: I had a feeling that was going to happen. It's too bad. I'm in Iowa right now and gas prices aren't horrible here, but they're high. I went up to Allentown a couple of weeks ago and took some interior photos to supplement the ones you took, and a couple of the outside. I'm going to be in Burlington, Vermont next weekend and I want to get an updated photo of the cathedral there (they restored the spire). I'm also hoping to get to Ogdensburg to see if I can get inside. In June I'm hoping to get inside Holy Spirit in Bismarck. I also hope to get some exteriors of the Rochester, Minnesota co-cathedral in either June or July. I got some updated photos of the Davenport cathedral today. Noinclude

Hello. Could you please tell me a little more about this edit yours?[2] The edit summary says it was a revert, but it wasn't a revert. You removed the editor's notes and grabbed the See also section with the noinclude tags. Neither of those things should have any positive effect as far as I'm aware. The position of the bottom, closing tag relative to the category declarations was the critical thing here. It needed to stay where I put it and your edit retained that position so we're still good. Could you please explain how it was "screwing up the US page" and how and why your changes corrected it? All I know is all the pages including List of cathedrals in the United States were behaving properly after I was done with that series of edits.--DB1729 (talk) 14:00, 28 June 2022 (UTC)

I just now realized your edit is preventing the transclusion of the See also and References section in addition to the categories. While my edit only prevented category transclusion. • @DB1729: (I wrote this while you added your second paragraph and it wouldn't let me save it. It reflects some of your what you have subsequently wrote. Sorry for being lazy, but I have to move on to something else.) Your edits put the bottom two sections of the state lists onto the List of cathedrals in the United States directly below the California, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas listings. It also moved some of the other state references to these new sections as well. By reverting the pages to their previous status before your edits, the references automatically fall in their proper numerical place on the bottom of the US list and the link to "List of cathedrals in the United States" (which obviously was not active on the US list) no longer appears at all. I manually edited the Illinois list (the first one I saw) because reverting your third edit would not have had the desired affect. I didn't check the other states edit history to see if I could do the revert automatically, but I did revert the page to its previous status. Sorry I caused the edit conflict. I understand this was written before my second post but just to clarify:

Again, no you didn't "revert" the page to its previous status. The previous status had miscategorizations due to improper transclusion of the categories. See the edit history of List of cathedrals in California.[3] Here's my edit, here's your edit and here's the diff between the revision before my edit and your current revision.[4] That's not a revert to it's previous status. As the last diff clearly shows, collectively our two edits combined to move the closing noinclude tag to where it needed to be to surround the categories (my change) and also remove the External links section (your change).

I actually incorrectly stated it was your edits I felt had no effect. My edits were solely concerned with the categories. Those pages were transcluding all their categories to List of cathedrals in the United States. So before my edits, List of cathedrals in the United States was appearing in every category that the California, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas lists were in. This was caused by the category declarations positioned outside the noinclude tags. My edits fixed that. However, I must have had my blinders on because I didn't consider anything other than suppressing the transclusion of those category declarations. Your edits fixed my oversight, while retaining my category fixes, which was all I was ever concerned with to begin with. I was just very confused by the edit summaries.
