FM story[edit]

Hello Farrell,

I was looking at the story you added to the FM page. Great information! - but I think it needs some fixing up to fit the encyclopedia style. I made a few changes to it, but stopped when I got to the large paragraph about playing back the CD. The style really needs to be changed, but I'm not sure it's right for me to do it. Maybe you could look at it and see if it can be tweaked?

In particular, I don't think quoted statements work in an anecdotal story; this isn't like an interview where statements were taken down word for word, nor is there an official interview where someone such as Cameron is recalling what was said.

In the paragraph before that one, there are still problems. In the part that says "they were given access to (the NoNoise system)" I'm not sure who gave the access, and who it was given to; we're saying "they" but only Cameron Hawkins is mentioned. There was probably a team of people working on this, but the paragraph doesn't actually say that. The next sentence says "they allowed..." - again, it's not clear who "they" is.

Hopefully what I've just typed makes sense. --A Knight Who Says Ni (talk) 13:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings A Knight Who Says Ni:

Well, at least you didn't send me off to find a herring...:-)

I was reading the article, as I am watching it, and noticed someone had done a great job of updating it. But knowning the band myself, thought the full story should be told. I am quite willing to update it...I was just trying to get it out, and on a page, it is all first draft stuff...maybe even just a notch above notes. I'll work on it over the weekend.

I've made a few contribs here on Wikipedia...places where I have personal knowledge. Mostly around FM, Science Fiction Fandom, and the Fidonet BBS network, and one of it's spin-offs.

Hi again, I've decided to revert the edit because it really can't stay as it is, and I don't see how minor fixes can resolve the problems. You can still access your edits from the history page, if you need to retrieve them. Here are some points:
  • You have probably seen enough of Wikipedia to understand what encyclopedic style looks like. The story is about as far from that style as we can get.
  • It is completely unsourced. Sources are are requirement on Wikipedia.
  • You have stated the edit is like a rough draft or notes. Even if presented as a finished story, it doesn't belong on Wikipedia in this form.
  • Most WP articles would be unlikely to cover the whole subject with much more than "the album was re-issued on CD in 1994". Putting in as much information as I did was probably unnecessary, and getting close to anectodal style. The article has links to an interview with Cameron Hawkins at a fan site, which gives a story-based explanation, for those who require more information Many of the important points in your edit are already covered in the interview.
  • I think your story would be great on a fan website, and it would be appropriate to use such a page as a reference at this spot in the WP article. In fact, why not try contributing it to the existing fan site? It's often said that WP isn't the only venue on the web, and rejection from WP doesn't mean the information should not exist elsewhere.
  • When I added information a while back, I deliberately avoided mentioning the "No Noise" system because it sounds like advertising. Since it appears that Hawkins was given free use of the system as some kind of a donation, he may have plugged the software in his interview as thanks. It's okay for it to be in a fansite article that is linked to, but I don't see how it enhances the WP article. There is nothing particularly ground-breaking about the remastering of this album.

February 2011[edit]

Please name calling you did at Talk:Ottawa Science Fiction Society. Focus on the articles and not other editors. Thank you. Name calling isn't going to help here. Let's focus on the article and not who you feel is a "busybody" RadioFan (talk) 12:32, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
