WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

Can you tell me if the new version of the template {{Hadith authenticity}} is backed by wikipedia policies. The template recently had a significant change in wording. My concern is that its not backed by wikipedia policies. And al-andalusi was wrong to change the wording --Misconceptions2 (talk) 00:51, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

I do not speak for the community. What you need to do is, of course, start a discussion on the template's talk page, and then get consensus for any changes or amendments to the recent rewording. Misconceptions2

Remember the issue raised yesterday by Misconceptions2 (talk · contribs) on WP:ANI which you closed and wrote:

"...Instead of having someone remove all the tags and thus begin a massive edit war, please resolve the concerns on the template's talk page. This thread should be considered closed now".

Well, he has reverted everything as if he was given the green light to do so, and has threatened on my TP and other talk pages that any reversal of his actions will be taken to the same board. Please note that I did in fact use the template's talk page before the issue was raised, see Template talk:Campaignbox Campaigns of Muhammad#Hadith reliability, but more importantly, that this user has a history of getting blocked for edit-warring in Islamic articles and was blocked indefinitely at some point. I did in fact use the template's talk page before the issue was raised? But you didn't attempt to discuss the tagging before you began it. Your comment there is dated 21:19, 5 July 2011 (UTC). You began tagging, with no explanation in the edit summary [1] before then (that one is dated 2011-07-05T20:10:47).

Vicky, here is what I would do:

The first concern, regarding sources and references, is due to the majority of references citing the college's own website. While that is OK in certain cases (for noncontroversial information, etc.), secondary sources are usually preferred over primary sources. There are some things in the article (e.g., athletics) that I'm sure news articles could be used as references instead of the college's own website, so I would look for those (and some sections already do cite news articles, so that's good!).
The second concern is over the tone/style of the article. I don't think it's too bad, but there are some sections that might include a bit too much trivial detail, e.g., "Student Life assists students with insurance, locker registration, student ID cards, housing, lost and found, and student handbooks. Students are offered opportunities for participation, leadership development, and service learning." Really in most colleges, a student life department (or something similar) will be responsible for those things, so this doesn't really need to be included. In addition, the list of areas of student life don't really need to be in the article—that's something I would expect to see on the college's website, but not in an encyclopedia entry. The casual reader probably does not need to know all the subdepartments and whatnot of each area! Similarly, the list of buildings on the main campus isn't necessary—if someone wants to find out more about the fitness center, for example, they'd probably want to look on the college's website.
The third concern is definitely valid, as you are affiliated with the college. However, that doesn't mean the notice will stay on the article forever! I would leave that one there for a little while (maybe a couple of weeks?) in case anyone else has concerns regarding the article so they know that it was written by someone who is connected to the college, and maybe help them make revisions or suggestions. (For the other issues, once you think you have addressed them, feel free to remove that particular notice yourself.)
The last concern is pretty easy to address, I think: the introduction, or lead, should summarize what is in the rest of the article; in addition, it should be prose and not in a list format. I would simply ensure that all relevant general information is summarized, and convert the bulleted lists into inline lists (i.e., "Chattanooga State offers 50 career programs, three parallel degrees, ... The college also has corporate training, dual enrollment, ... programs.") In fact, you could do this throughout the rest of the article, too, so everything is prose as I don't see anything that has to be a bulleted list.

PPI Assessment research in FastCompany

Second opinion

Hi Fetchcomms!

Would you look at the talk page of User:Peter G Werner, who has complained about my being uncivil (also on my talk page).

He was the fellow who introduced the extensive paraphrasing of the SPUSA's "history" into the article about the Socialist Party of America: The talk-page of that article has a list of paraphrasing, which seems extensive enough to merit some administrative history blanking (to judge by the outcome of the penultimate RfA).

The slander that some of the "Shachtmanites" were practicing "democratic centralism" was so horrible that I looked for it, and discovered the plagiarism. I believe that it is probably a BLP violation, because Rachelle Horowitz, Joshua Muravchik, Eric Chennoweth, Norm Hill, etc. are still alive.

I have zero tolerance for such slanders, or for plagiarism, or padding one COI/Unreliable/Primary reference with multiple mis-citations of a serious book like Draper's biography of Shachtman. Aristotelian ethics allows indignation (versus slave morality), as does Christian ethics; if WP does not, then you may block me if you feel it's necessary. In any event, I'll take a short WikiBreak now.

(I also did some clean-up at the Socialist Party of the United States of America and at the Socialist Party of Ohio and at Dan La Botz: This and other related articles seemed to have a lot of problems with POV/OR/COI, imho. I did some tagging, and my zeal may have been greater than my judgment a few times. A quick review would be nice.)

Hi Kiefer, unfortunately I will be traveling over the next two weeks (and I'll be leaving in about an hour, actually) so I don't want to get involved in this because I probably will not be able to follow up or monitor the situation. Ambassador Program: assessment drive

Even though it's been quiet on-wiki, the Wikipedia Ambassador Program has been busy over the last few months getting ready for the next term. We're heading toward over 80 classes in the US, across all disciplines. You'll see courses start popping up here, and this time we want to match one or more Online Ambassadors to each class based on interest or expertise in the subject matter. If you see a class that you're interested, please contact the professor and/or me; the sooner the Ambassadors and professors get in communication, the better things go. Look for more in the coming weeks about next term.

In the meantime, with a little help I've identified all the articles students did significant work on in the last term. Many of the articles have never been assessed, or have ratings that are out of date from before the students improved them. Please help assess them! Pick a class, or just a few articles, and give them a rating (and add a relevant WikiProject banner if there isn't one), and then update the list of articles.

Once we have updated assessments for all these articles, we can get a better idea of how quality varied from course to course, and which approaches to running Wikipedia assignments and managing courses are most effective.

I don't have access to the SLPL resources (I don't live in their membership area), but the Globe-Democrat has no online archives that I know of; the only place the physical archives exist is in the Mercantile Library. In addition, according to the Post-Dispatch website, their online archives only go back to 1988. So I think you're out of luck :( unless you can find a university library with extensive archives. /ƒETCH COMMS / 00:01, 28 July 2011 (UTC)

WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

Thank you for notifying me of what you did on your--er, my user talk page. Main reason I don't edit articles on Wikipedia all that much (thereby the 8 actual article edits I have) is that I don't really find much for me to actually edit. I also edit on my phone most of the time. (I use Opera Mini 4 instead of my phones imbedded browser, as opera works better. I view Wikipedia on the non-mobile version of Wikipedia) Mini 4 apparently encounters a runtime exception if I try to enter into an edit box with way, way too many characters. I'm talking over 5524 chars, as that is what the limit opera mini 4 puts me at. So, again, thanks for letting me know that. I'll try using Special:Random some more whenever I'm on my laptop. (because my web browser on my computer DOESN'T encounter a runtime error when I try to edit a box that has over 5524 chars in it, of course) LikeLakers2 (talk) 02:49, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

No worries. My main point was just that users who tend to edit mostly user talk pages and user pages often end up getting blocked, because the main goal of Wikipedia is not to chat a lot but to provide free educational articles to the world. Obviously you are perfectly allowed to edit your user pages and leave messages for others and even have a little fun, but remember that articles are the main focus here. Might I also suggest looking through this category in your free time and fixing up some ugly articles? Speaking of fun... {{trout}} :3 Also, I checked the rules, or rather, the help desk, and apparently what you said is true. I never actually thought you were wrong, just that it somewhat didn't make much sense to me is all. Though it was a bit surprising to see that I only had 8 article edits! I think those were mainly me just using Lupin's anti-vandal tool for things like that. (also, I should mention that my phone starts to lag in the edit box at one point. If you look at my contribs, I uploaded a new file with some stuff. Basically, I found something I think I may like to do: make files tagged with {{shouldbepng}}, well, PNG format.
