Hey Ganesh, my bot is approved! All thanks to U!!!

Never in my wildest dreams could I have thought that I could ever operate a bot if not for you. Thanks for being so patient with me!!! -- Lost(talk) 16:30, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS:I am still not fully active. Will be more active in November..

thanks![edit]

When I started my second editor review, I had no idea how greatly helpful it would be to me. Here are people from across the world who I've never met or laid eyes upon, taking their personal time to think about me and offer me valuable criticism and advice. And the stuff I've learnt is more helpful in real life than just on Wikipedia. This is an experiment I will never forget. I thank you most sincerely for your kindness, for helping me be a better person. I am very much in your debt. Rama's arrow 15:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Advise please[edit]

Hi Ganesh, I started doing another run today. I am facing two problems that are frustrating me:

 • I do all the stuff User:Kingbotk/Plugin/Generic WikiProject templates tells me. Then I save the xml file for future use. But it never loads my previous settings for me. Gives some sort of error. Then I have to go thru the whole procedure again trying to find the redirects and adding them to the template etc.
 • Too often, I get the error: Zero sized reply. Am I doing something wrong? LostBot 18:44, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another question: The bot tagged Talk:Katoch as stub even though it does not use a stub template. (I populated from Category:History of Himachal Pradesh). Doesn't it actually check if the article uses a stub template? -- Lost(talk) 18:54, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Plotting multiple cricket grounds[edit]

Could you please try this on Indian cricket team, in the picture with the map of the venues. Thanks. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:03, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have this table on the page which lists the cities each of the grounds is located in. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:26, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You could use that, although I imagine the table with both ground names and cities would be easier, but whatever suits you best is fine. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:29, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Osmania Univ.[edit]

There's this article created by Ganeshbot. Are you sure its a town? Isn't it a university? Should it be merged? Me thinks not. The Silent Contributor 15:55, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indian geography stubs by district[edit]

I see your bot has been busy again, in Uttar Pradesh this time. These by-state categories (and stub categories) are becoming very large: when you're creating these new articles, could you add by-district categories instead? I assume this is doable, as often they do link to the district they're part of. Alai 18:00, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, my bad: I saw a large tranche of same starting at User:Ganeshbot/sandbox/Akbarpur, and assumed they were recent. There must be a large number of other new articles in UP (if only one could do "diffs" on categories). And thanks, I'm sure the district stuff will pan out in the long run. Alai 18:26, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's an excellent idea (I should have thought of that myself). By all means. Alai 18:40, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reg: Assessment[edit]

Moved to [1].

More categories[edit]

Hi Ganesh, should we add more categories apart from the various stubs to the automation page? Currently all stubs are aligned to a workgroup. And there should not be duplication if we start working on the non stub categories -- Lost(talk) 11:59, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

But as that was in July, I haven't the foggiest idea what I wanted to do. :-) --estavisti 14:25, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It worked![edit]

Hey Ganesh, it worked! Now I have another question, on the India tab in AWB, a field called alternate names has only WP_India according to your settings. When I searched according to instructions, all WP Indian cinema templates also redirect to this one.

Regarding the automation page, I did put up a category where I am starting work. But my signature does not appear in the last column of the table. Any idea, why??

Man, I must have asked you atleast 20 questions in the past few days!!! -- Lost(talk) 14:48, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ganeshk, You reverted my edit to Indian language wiki links on Wikipedia:WikiProject_India/to_do. I had made the changes because the links were pointing to non-existent pages, that too written in the script of some other languages (Korean and Japanese, I think). This was as seen on IE6. Please find below a screenshot of the same.

Are these valid pages, or am I the only one seeing the links this way because of some inexplicable Unicode font problem with IE?

At the very least, I am going to change the Marathi wikipedia link which clearly has Specialpages misspelled as Spacialpages.

Thanks,
MaximvsDecimvs 16:08, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No issues! Just wanted to confirm whether it a browser problem. Thanks for the revert. MaximvsDecimvs 16:43, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Delhi metro.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Delhi metro.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add Replaceable fair use disputed
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kjetil_r 18:09, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganeshbot articles merge[edit]

I have completed the merge for all Category:Cities and towns in Uttaranchal, but I am not sure about the population figures for Dehradun. The article already had some figures that's drastically different from the info gathered by the bot. this website shows something different from both. Please check it up. Other than this everything else was more or less smooth. ~ srini 15:55, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have now corrected the population data in the infobox. Abt how I got to 'Not created' page... I found a list of uncreated places in Category:Cities and towns in Uttaranchal while I was editing some town in Uttaranchal some time back, and that's how I found my way to User:Ganeshbot/Not_created. And sure, I will help with more merges in the future. ~ srini 04:22, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ganeshbot suggestion[edit]

Ganesh, I was considering User:Ganeshbot/Not created and noticed that there is no way for anyone looking at the existing Wikipedia article to know that there is more information available to be merged in. Would it be possible to use Ganeshbot to tag the talk pages of every article that has an entry in User:Ganeshbot/Not created? A merge page on the article itself would be too much, but the talk page would be ideal I'd think. It seems some could be done automatically, but some like User:Ganeshbot/sandbox/Tura would have to consider the disambiguation page at Tura first and find Tura, India. Those would need manual intervention, but perhaps AWB or similar would help in the task. - Taxman Talk 06:30, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I created a template, Mergefromganeshbot for this purpose and added it to Talk:Ambassa. Please take a look and comment. I could tag this template across the articles on Not created page using AWB. -- Ganeshk (talk) 20:48, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, but add an explanatory link in the template to what the Ganeshbot sandbox article is and some tips on merging them in. That way people that don't know anything about the project will have some context, understand why it wasn't merged in automatically, what the source of the data was, etc. Maybe create a page just for that purpose that has the header information from User:Ganeshbot/Not created and the context from User:Ganeshbot. That way people won't have to load the whole not created page to get to work, but it can be linked to of course. - Taxman Talk 21:21, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images on the India page[edit]

Hi, Could you please take a look at the discussion section "Too many images?" on the India page? I've been trying to tell user Hkelkar (who has added a number of pictures recently, including one to the demographics section) that he should discuss the issue with you and others first. I seem to remember that you have an ongoing discussion on which pictures to add to that section. Fowler&fowler 02:22, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images on India[edit]

I suggest you look at Pakistan, another featured article with many more images. The images as they stand now are not representative.Hkelkar 03:00, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I am glad that you are so proud. I only wish you could express it as I have. The pics, as they stand, do not even remotely constitute a representative cross section. Even though India is featured, so are al the other articles I mentioned. Among the country-featured articles, India is one of the worst right now.Like I said, shall I start a "Cities" section in the article or what?Hkelkar 03:09, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Largest Cities would be POV????? Why is it that only we Indians seem to suffer from such problems and consequently produce some of the worst articles on wikipedia? Why do the Americans not have this POV problem? See United_States#Largest_cities.Care to explain that? It is widely regarded that Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi & Chennai are the 4 major metropolitan cities, with Bangalore, Cochin/Ernakulam, Hyderabad and a few other trailing behind. I propose we mention them all briefly and put the pics I uploaded there.Hkelkar 03:26, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But Pakistan is! Plus, their article is better than ours because they don;t waste time with their own pet peeves and try to improve the article rather than undo the work of others and then try to find justifications for it.It's a miracle that we actually won any wars against them.Hkelkar 03:33, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: map testing[edit]

Yes, I was responding to the criticism on the template talk page -- it seemed the guy wanted more state-specific detail (counties/district borders, etc -- see for example Seattle or other American city infobox maps). The difference here is that general color scheme, scale, etc. would be preserved. If it is generally not liked, I'm willing to roll back the changes, though. But I feel that it is relatively unobtrusive to add district outlines and state-level shading to the standard map (compared to what he was proposing -- completely different maps w/ different scales, etc.). Thanks. Saravask 07:24, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I just noticed that certain pogs (e.g., Trivandrum) were off the mark a bit. Makes sense to do more testing before implementing these. Saravask 07:43, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks better than the garish multi-hued red/blue pogs we were using. I think it can go into the template now. The future issue though is that if/when we implement the state-shaded maps (w/ red shading, the red color might not stand out enough. But for now, it's fine. I was just doing some testing w/ color just now -- nothing permanent. Thanks. Saravask 09:00, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, GaneshK, could you have a look at these edits? User:Knbh created this article Best_hrithik, this one The_Under_World_Don and this one The_World_Best_Hrithik_Roshan. They are about movies that clearly don't exist. Also, among his edits are alterations of filmographies: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 among others. In all of these movies, Roshan has not part (at least, I didn't find any information about him on Google, Imdb and IndiaFm) - yet, he keeps adding him. --Plumcouch Talk2Me 15:15, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hkelkar, Freedom skies, and Sati[edit]

Dear Ganeshk,

I don't mean to trouble you with inconsequential stuff, but please take a look at the India talk page. In my opinion, users Hkelkar and Freedom skies are pushing their POV into the history section sentence on Sati.

Fowler&fowler 18:30, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was gonna ask you something different Ganesh, but Raja Ram Mohan Roy is widely known as the prominent anti-Sati activist of his time. Hkelkar has provided refs to back him up, and nearly every user other than fowler does will agree with him. I'll ask the bengali users their input on this, since they know more than I do (I'm just a PIO, not even an NRI). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bakasuprman (talkcontribs) 19:40, 5 November 2006.

Mini talk page template[edit]

Hi Ganeshk: can you assist in adding the optional "small" parameter to the talk page templates, and removing the transclusions to the subpages? I've done ACIDnom, FAOL, , Spoken Wikipedia request, Oldpeerreview, FACfailed, FailedGA, Peerreview. We can start by creating the optional parameter for the templates which you have created a /Small subpage (and then remove transclusions to the subpage and delete it), and then move on from there! Talk:Islam looks great now! (Also, if you're looking for new templates to add the parameter to, try the templates on these pages) —Mets501 (talk) 20:18, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image size?[edit]

Mmm, I'm pretty sure that 45px is the standard image size for userboxes templates anyway, not 30px; there's no need to make these any smaller, in my opinion. Kirill Lokshin 03:20, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The smaller size helps more text fit in the box, thereby making it smaller (which is good). -- Ganeshk (talk) 03:21, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not going to significantly affect the vast majority of templates (since the size will still be controlled by how lines break, not the text in of itself). It also makes any image more complicated than clipart rather unrecognizable. I have no particular problems if people want to shrink some images that don't lose much, but please don't try to impose this as a rule across the board. Kirill Lokshin 03:24, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did not mean to impose it as a rule. It helps if all the templates use 30px so that all the text and images align across the boxes. That was my thought. -- Ganeshk (talk) 03:27, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, a certain amount of inconsistency is to be expected, particularly from the more complex templates. The ones with show/hide divs, in particular, can change internal alignment quite sharlpy depending on how those are set up, so trying to cram them all into the same width is likely to be unproductive anyways. Understood! Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 03:42, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And thank you for all the work you've been doing adding the needed code to templates! :-)
(Maybe we'll be able to have it be the default, at some point, with only selected templates even having a large version?) Kirill Lokshin 03:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again![edit]

Hey Ganesh, thanks for the (n+1)th time!!! BTW, my bot has now probably got more edits than me:) -- Lost(talk) 14:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou, thankyou. WP:INBIN seems very handy. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:47, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, you should use Template talk:Did you know for collecting stamps for your new articles. I don't see you there ever. It's good fun - I've collected 46 so far - hopefully this will be my 47th. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 06:58, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Pity that it was picked out of sequence, I just expanded it a little more...Blnguyen (bananabucket) 03:21, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Using Latitude and Longitude info[edit]

Hi, see if you could use the info from http://www.fallingrain.com for updating the lat, long for all the towns. Currently, I'm manually taking information from this to update the info on various towns and cities. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Balajiviswanathan (talkcontribs) 23:07, 10 November 2006.

(Sorry for forgetting to sign the previous msg)

However, for some of the stubs without the latlongs, I found the info in fallingrain and updated. Balajiviswanathan 23:17, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I dont remember what all towns, I've modified through Fallingrain, but I remember modifying atleast a dozen towns and cities, including Tiruchendur and Badrinath. I guess a part of the problem is some of the cities are misspelt in fallingrain (eg. http://www.fallingrain.com/world/IN/25/Tiruchchendur.html wouldnt be caught by ur bot for Tiruchendrur)

RfA thanks[edit]

Thanks Ganesh for supporting my RfA and for comments made on it. I am very grateful for showing confidence in me. Very thanks for congratulations, Shyam (T/C) 06:00, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spam[edit]

spam Lincher 17:28, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is funny, though it wasn't my intention at all ... it came from User:GeorgeMoney/spam's list where I was just perusing and trying to look at how things worked ... evil me ... not knowing it and hitting your username's button made an autosaved edit that I didn't notice. I guess you learn it the hard way. I'm sorry for any trouble caused. I find such a page a really bad thing especially if badfaithed users fall on it. Well, good luck with whatever you do on WP ;) Lincher 21:26, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This edition special
 • Cartography Department (Shortcut:WP:INMAP): The Department of Cartography within the WikiProject India is a group of wikipedians who work on providing quality maps related to India. Their contributions gain more significance as we try to provide more information on places, districts and states of India. As a thumb rule, maps serve better if they are in SVG format. The location maps by the cartography department has helped us include location information based on latitudes and longitudes for a give place within India. The Indian Roadways map is a featured image, one amongst the few best road maps in the world. Still, there is more work to be done. There are 604 districts in India (see List of districts of India), and each district page needs a map of that district. You can help too. Contact the Cartography Department to learn how you can help in making the best maps in Wikipedia to be India-related!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may mention it at WikiProject India Outreach Department.
