Meditation Cabal message

Hello. I'm your mediator. For updates on your case, please see Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Cases/2007-12-09 University of Missouri. Thanks, Auroranorth (!) 03:33, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the Barnstar!

Thanks for the barnstar! It really made my day! I too appreciate all your efforts on Missouri! Americasroof (talk) 21:34, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Please do not remove redlinks from NRHP locations. Each NRHP location is, and leaving the redlinks in place invites readers to write articles about them. Thanks, Rklawton (talk) 22:24, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

My bad, I see the reasoning now.Grey Wanderer | Talk 22:29, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for your hard work on all the Missouri articles. I'm thinking, however, that the nicknames and the link to photos of the cyclone ought to stay. Can we discuss the reasons for deleting? DavidOaks (talk) 02:38, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Your welcome, I've seen your work on quite a few articles as well. I'm going to default to your opinion because I think you known the area better than me, however I do have a couple of suggestions. How about instead of linking to the tornado website in external links, you use it as a source. That way people can follow it if they want more information, and the article gets a good source. It also prevents the unwieldy suggestion to follow the link at a different location in the article. As far as nicknames go, I'm really uncomfortable with them without reliable sources, especially derogatory one. Perhaps the local newspaper has mention of these names? Urban dictionary, however, should not be used as a source. If you really want the nicknames, then I won't object. I've added the tornado link back as a source. I didn't mean to step on your feet, I was just doing a little routine clean up on all the Missouri county seat pages.Grey Wanderer | Talk 02:51, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
Having reflected a little further on it, I'm good with the way you've done things. Cheers. DavidOaks (talk) 21:23, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Barnstar

Thanks for the barnstar! I'm glad we've been able to get along so well regarding the recent activity on the University of Missouri articles. I look forward to making the articles better!—Lazytiger (Talk | contribs) 04:04, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Congratulations

Congratulations Grey Wanderer! I've peer reviewed the article Columbia, Missouri, of which you have made significant contributions to. Upon review, I have deemed that the article is worthy of GA-status. Again, congratulations!-Mastrchf91- 19:00, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

You being awesome

I just wanted to say that I'm impressed with how active you are on wikipedia. I check my watchlist once in a while and I always see edits by you on several different articles. You are the king (or queen) of improving Columbia related articles it appears. Just wanted to say keep up the good work and that I wish I could contribute as much as you do (but I'll try anyway).

Happy editing. Breakyunit (talk) 20:55, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the kind words, its nice to be appreciated.Grey Wanderer | Talk 20:58, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Student Government

Hello, i was wondering if you could help me with the Student Government part of UMSL's page. People keep deleteing it saying things like no third party sources, but someone added them. Thanks! oh and also i dont mean to offend anyone by talking about the flagship thing, it just stinks to have someone say that i attend a second rate university when umsl is really a great (highly ranked) school. Whsbrain (talk) 17:24, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

I think we have a good chance of saving the article, don't forget to vote!Grey Wanderer | Talk 05:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for your help, i apreciate it! Whsbrain (talk) 19:32, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Missouri

Pursuant to your message about Template:Boone County, Missouri, I thought I'd just ask your opinion about what I've done in Missouri so far, which has mainly concerned townships. I've only done Adair, Andrew, and Atchison Counties so far, and as you are in Missouri, I'd value your input before I go much further. I've also been making the township maps for the articles as I go along. Omnedon (talk) 04:03, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

I think your county templates really help create "wiki-connections" between rural and semi-rural towns and villages. I don't know much about what official functions townships play in government, but from what I can tell they play a larger role in rural areas. Your maps really impress me, that kind of thing is far beyond my skill. I don't know if townships in the urban areas of St. Louis and Kansas city are pertinent. I do wonder about the education sections on the township pages, as at least in my part of Missouri I know most of these rural school districts and schools have been dissolved and incorporated into town school districts the cover large parts of the counties. I've started to added WikiProject Missouri templates to the talk pages of the townships you have created as well.Grey Wanderer | Talk 04:24, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I began to wonder about the school data too, when I noticed one township that had quite a few of them listed. This data comes from the USGS, and sometimes it lists features as "historical", but sometimes it does not even though the features seem not to be really relevant any longer on closer examination. Bottom line, I guess that data is not entirely up-to-date, so perhaps that part should be omitted. Omnedon (talk) 04:31, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

I agree with you on leaving out educational sections, I like the mention of cemeteries though, and the geography section is a must.Grey Wanderer | Talk 04:35, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

On an unrelated note, I just want to say how good it is to run into someone like you -- in a nutshell, someone who is nice, as well as being an involved editor. Thus far, most (though not all) of the contact I've had with other editors has been in terms of their criticism of my work. I know this is not universal by any means, but based on my own personal experience, seeing the "new messages" alert often makes me wince. So, thanks for a pleasant experience. Omnedon (talk) 18:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words, I think people bite each other's heads off way to often in wikiland. I look forward to working with you further, if you need any help, or Missouri-related advice let me know.Grey Wanderer | Talk 21:19, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the barnstar! Omnedon (talk) 00:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the Barnstar

I've never seen a Socratic Barnstar before, but I think it's pretty cool. Thank you. Lovelac7 08:15, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Public Ivy Template

Seeing as how the Flagship University Template is likely to be deleted, can we at least have a Public Ivy Template? This would seem like a fair compromise, and would achive a mark of distinction that is needed for the truly excellent Public Universities. (User:Jccort) 12:55, 9 January 2008 (UTC) >I created one before, but the Ivy League Kids got angry and deleted it.

Jccort, believe it or not, I'm not trying to be a jerk. I understand your desire to recognize excellent pubic schools, and I appreciate your time and effort on Wikipedia. The problem is that this topic is not cut and dried. That's why I'm opposed to lists and/or templates of such things, because they imply definitive criteria for inclusion. These are not lists of things that are empirically simple, e.g., does a particular school exist or not? You're wanting to include things based on arbitrary and non-uniform factors and that's just asking for trouble. While there is a time and place for subjective topics, you have to be careful. There are already articles for Public Ivy and Flagship university, and that's fine. There should be. But there should not be any original (to Wikipedia) lists that even attempt to be definitive and certainly not templates, which spread lists all around. Having articles but not lists creates the delicate and important cushion of separation between the definition and application of subjective terms while not trying to define the undefinable scope of the terms.—Lazytiger (Talk | contribs) 15:48, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Well, designating a "Public Ivy" is even more controversial than designating a "Flagships", so sorry Im not going to support that. I do believe with the several sources for flagships that popped up, and by using school websites as well that the Flagship university article and accompanying list should stay. We also might through around the idea of a flagship category, what do you think lazytiger?Grey Wanderer | Talk 21:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
A category would be less cluttering than a template, if we're hellbent on creating a list (as a category would do) of flagship universities. But, I do believe that a category might be a reasonable compromise. In my mind at least, categories do not create the same sort of definitive list that could be implied by a handmade list.—Lazytiger (Talk | contribs) 21:21, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Picture copyrights

I was wondering about the license you used for this picture. How did you know it was under CC 2.5 license? Did the person's flickr say so? I know of some pictures that I'd like to upload from various sites, but I never do because I never know what license to use and if I am allowed to upload them at all. To my knowledge I don't see license for pictures on most websites, but maybe I just don't know where to look for them. Do you think you could enlighten me so that I will know when and what I can upload? I've tried to find answers on Wikipedia, but haven't had much luck understanding the copyright pages and such. Thanks a bunch, Breakyunit (talk) 21:46, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

I messaged the user who uploaded that picture on Flickr and asked him if we could use it on Wikipedia under the CC license. I did this a while back, when I didn't know what I was doing, I am supposed to have a copy of that permission email on file somewhere, but I haven't figured out where yet. If you know how to contact the author of the photos you want to use, you should do so. Most people are flattered to think that we want to use their pic on wikipeda, just be sure to mention the licensee it would be under. Some pictures on flickr are under the CC license by default and you can use them without asking as well.Grey Wanderer | Talk 21:50, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. Breakyunit (talk) 00:03, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

The Grand Hotel

Thanks for support on move - could you clarify at Talk:The Grand Hotel whether you support move to Grand Hotel (Taipei City) (previously used name, would save a lot of redirects, city seems to be called that throughout its article at Taipei, eg in Infobox), or to Grand Hotel (Taipei) as proposed by AjaxSmack? Thanks. PamD (talk) 08:14, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Taking care of, thanks.Grey Wanderer | Talk 08:21, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Hiya - just a quickie - I've removed the speedy tag on the above, as I think the article asserts notability. Whether it may pass AfD is questionable, but in my view it's not speedy-able. Thanks! Giles Bennett (Talk, Contribs) 00:21, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you Grey Wanderer for cleaning up this page. I wasn't sure how many references were appropriate. Looking on his media page there are lots of references, but not many primarily sourced. I plan on doing a couple of others for notable runners (i.e. juggling marathoner, jump roping marathoner) so this is instructive on what and what not to include. Is there any thing else I should do to make this a better encyclopedic candidate? --21:25, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Yarkoski1012 (talk)

Please offer input on towns in Missouri

Some time ago, Category:Towns in Missouri was emptied on the grounds that there are no official towns in Missouri. I believe that I can prove otherwise, and I've presented my evidence on the wikiproject talk page. As a member of the Missouri Wikiproject, would you please offer your opinion? Thanks!
