Proposed blackout in protest of RA 10175

Dear Hollyckuhno,

Greetings!

As a Filipino Wikipedian, I hope you are aware of the passage of Republic Act No. 10175, also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, which was signed into law by President Benigno Aquino III on September 12, 2012. Currently, there is a discussion on the Tambayan, the noticeboard for Philippines-related topics, about a proposed blackout of the English Wikipedia in the Philippines in order to protest the passage of RA 10175, similar to the blackout against SOPA and PIPA held earlier this year. I feel that your input on the subject will definitely help in the discussion.

Please feel free to participate in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Tambayan Philippines#The Cybercrime Prevention Act, and I hope your input will help the Filipino Wikipedia community determine which is the best course of action against this law. OK, I'll spell it out as you can't see it. WP:FilmRelease - "Release dates should therefore be restricted to the film's earliest release, whether it was at a film festival..." TIFF was on 12 Sept 2015. Now, I don't know what calendar you have, but on mine 12 Sept 2015 is before 25 Dec 2015. Read the rest of the guidance carefully and you'll see it's the first release (festival, whatever) then the first release in the country it was produced in. I got your message and I do know the format.

But why is my update unacceptable? Why are you calling it disruptive? I followed the rules. I have appropriate citations. Now, let me point out the flaw in one of your updates that I was trying to correct.

First your update, "Je C.C. of Philippine Entertainment Portal gave a mixed review writing about the film as "still falling into the pitfalls of Star Cinema cliches, Barcelona: A Love Untold becomes a film of blemished beauty, but that is fine." is misleading because the author's review was not mixed. In fact, he was saying that even though the movie falls into the usual cliche of blemished beauty, it was fine and the whole article was positive but your update was putting a negative spin to it. So I just added a few more blurbs in the article to show that it wasn't a negative review. And the fact that you explicitly stated that Oggs Cruz of Rappler had a "negative review" is redundant because the readers can already read that it is negative based on Oggs' words ""dull and ineffective" and "feels too mechanical, too designed to work." It shows malice and subjectivity not objectivity, which, as editors, we should uphold.

Rod Magaru provided a positive review and you deleted it. Why, because it was positive? What makes you the authority to only include negative reviews and not the positive ones? Unless you are biased. Editors should not be biased and provide only facts. And my updates had appropriate references.

Please review my updates again. I'm contesting and requesting reinstatement of my update. If I have appropriate citations, my updates should be acceptable and NOT disruptive. We can discuss this amicably or we can take it to an admin for arbitration.

I just don't see the non-conformity of this sentence and quotation, Rod Magaru writes, "Olive Lamasan’s BARCELONA asks you to forgive & live." VERSUS this, Oggs Cruz of Rappler gave a negative review stating that the film is "dull and ineffective", and added that the film "feels too mechanical, too designed to work." Why is the latter acceptable to YOU and not the former? Why is adding to Je C.C.'s quote the sentence, He wrote, "Kathryn Bernardo is brilliant and (surprisingly for me) commanding as the ambitious, but easily discouraged Mia. Daniel Padilla has an equally persuasive depiction with his restrained Ely, a character who possesses compelling dignity ..." not acceptable and disruptive as you called it? It was stated in the article itself. Please explain how that's supposed to be disruptive? Explain to me why that doesn't conform with MOS while the other quotations do?

This isn't the American Journal of Medicine. These are Critical Reception comments to a Filipino movie. The statements aren't false. They are based on the articles being referenced. And the quoted sentences are succinct enough.

Again, it's a bit obvious that you want to censor information that doesn't conform to YOUR own bias, it seems. Otherwise, you could've just corrected the quotations yourself but NOT DELETE it completely.

I'd welcome suggestions from you on how to quote or phrase it correctly but request again for you to reinstate my updates before I submit a dispute to the admin.

The quotation from Je C.C. is enough since it summarizes his/her review for the film. The MOS states that quotation should be keep into minimal. Now, the quotation from Rod Magaru on the other hand is out of context. The sub-article is about the critical reception of the film but the quote "Olive Lamasan's BARCELONA asks you to forgive & live." is obviously not a review. But that's your subjective opinion. I have read so many filipino movie pages without this kind of censorship. They're horribly written and one of them, by the way, is an article that you have often policed and edited - "Imagine You and Me" - it is badly written with grammatical errors all over yet you don't correct it. Who are you to say that Rod Magaru's review is not a review? Everyone's review, even Phil Dy's and Oggs Cruz, are their SUBJECTIVE opinions, what they think of the movie regardless if it agrees with the actual reception of the public or not. You're deciding that Rod's review is an advertisement for the film because you don't agree with it. But that's YOUR opinion. You're supposed to be an objective editor. Did you read his article? Was he directly selling the film to everyone? In fact, he had several issues with the film - the length, the product placement, etc. How can you claim that he was trying to sell the film when he listed both the pros and cons, something I can't say about Oggs Cruz who just found everything wrong with the film. You're an editor. Are you also an admin to police and censor everyone? If it's inappropriate I can understand it but it's not inappropriate. You're not the police of the internet. The review, no matter how slanted it is, is a valid review, the same way that Phil Dy and Oggs reviews are slanted. And you have no right to censor it from wikipedia just because you may not agree with it.

If you are going to police all Filipino movie pages, then do it FOR ALL PAGES, not just selectively for pages that you may not like. Don't play god of filipino movie pages. Stop censorship. Wikipedia is for everyone.

I am only referring to the quotation from Rod Magaru that you have added to the article. It is out of context because it does not fall into the article's purpose of giving the readers a bird's eye view on the film's critical reception. Furthermore, the quotation you have provided does not summarize the review of Rod Magaru to the film, instead you have deliberately chosen it because it sounds good but in Wikipedia, soap-boxing and advertisement is not allowed. The MOS:QUOTATIONS clearly states that quotation should be used only "to illustrate a point, establish context, or attribute a point of view or idea" and in this case, about the critical reception to the film. Have you read the entire International release and box office section that I added? It was peppered with citations and reliable sources. Have you heard of Movie City News? It's a legitimate facts/figures only website based out of Los Angeles that only publishes legitimate movie box office results. I have seen many Wikipedia pages citing Movie City News. Their source is the same source used by Box Office Mojo. So why would you remove that entire section when it is from citations. I have seen many Filipino movie pages in Wikipedia where anonymous users constantly update it with bogus figures that are not cited yet it's tolerated whereas what I added actually had reliable & legitimate citations.

You said be prepared to cite reliable sources so please tell me what in my section was not cited from reliable sources and why you deleted the whole section?

I looked into all the Filipino movies that they published and only 5 movies had citations where the movie gross passed $1,000,000. They published that those 5 movies made over $1 million in 10 days therefore it is a fact.

And it's not like I'm just pulling facts out of air. I actually cited every single movie in that list. So why can't we come to a compromise and include the entire section since those are facts.

Hi Hollyckuhno, I don't dispute the fact that Vice Ganda, Coco Martin, along with Awra Briguela and Onyok Pineda are the main cast, however Vice Ganda and Coco Martin are the only "starring" actors. And Briguela and Pineda are billed as "Introducing...". If the parameter of the infobox says "main cast" then I have no qualms. There's a discussion where it made's by the administrator. Revenue and operating income on Rappler

I edited the revenue and operating income based on virtually the same source. I noticed that the source in the version before my edits is already dead. I found another ownership report from the same website which had different figures.

In hindsight, I also thought that the low revenue and operating income (based on this source) is the reason why Rappler is recently asking for donations, which kinda justified the edit.
