Go to the top of the page...choose the Page tab...then Tools, and then expand bare references. This will populate the bare refs, although we always need to check for errors.

"Archiving" works the same. Go to an article, select the page tab, choose "Fix dead links". Choose "Add archives to all non-dead references (Optional)" and then "Analyze". This takes a bit of time, but your references will be archived, and the archives will automatically be added to the article. This is a wise thing to do, as links can go dead over time, but if we store them soon after adding, they will be available for future reference. I hope this makes sense, let me know if you have questions. You can experiment with this in your Sandbox, and view the results. As you can see, my archiving was not a great feat of technical prowess. But, speaking as someone who works to retrieve dead links and repair references, on a regular basis, these are excellent tools, IMO. Best, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 02:09, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the information Tribe of Tiger. I've started a handful of other articles, so I may look at trying this for them. Kind regards.Hu Nhu (talk) 02:41, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello again, Tribe of Tiger. I tried this today but I did not do so well. I was not only able find the page tab. Where is it?Hu Nhu (talk) 21:20, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Across the top of every article/draft, you will see: Article(tab) Talk(tab) Then a space, followed by: Read(tab), Edit source(tab), View history(tab), followed by a little "star icon" and then: Page(tab), More(tab). Then. there is the "Search Wikipedia" box. Does this help? If not, let me know, I want to help you!
When you click on the Page tab, a drop-down menu (mentioned above) should appear, which shows: Page logs, Analysis, Search, Tools...plus three other items. I am not technically savvy, so if this is not working for you, I implore you to ask at the Teahouse, where better-informed editors can provide assistance. In the meantime, if you will tell me which article/draft you are working on, I will fix things for you, because I am not having problems with this feature. Plus, if I DO have the very same problem, then we can bring this to the attention of editors who can fix the problem. Please let me know if this works for you. Best of luck! Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 00:07, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
I hope you don't mind, but I looked at your sandbox, and conducted an experiment. The "fill bare references" will only work if the "bare url" is enclosed in ref tags. Don't put the bare url in brackets [ ]. Just enclose the bare urls with the ref tags, and let the computer program do the rest. You will see that I have added four (out of six) formatted refs to your Sandbox. You can give it a try with the others. This tool/program is great, but not perfect. I had to do minor revisions, by adding the complete website to the last two.Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 03:41, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
And hello again, Tribe of Tiger. It is absolutely fine that you went into my sandbox--it is a bit cluttered since I use it mostly as a notepad. I appreciate what you did to the references I have on a possible future article, and I will look further into that. Unfortunately, I was not very precise when I stated that I had been working without success--specifically that is with the archiving. I do not have a page tab. You very clearly listed out all the tabs and I see all except the page tab. It is missing. On my screen, with both Firefox and Chrome, I have nothing between the little star and the more tab. Might you have certain editing permissions which I lack that precludes me from seeing the page tab? Thank you so much for your kind assistance.Hu Nhu (talk) 04:14, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
No, we have the same permission levels, just checked: extended confirmed and autoconfirmed. (These are basic permission levels.) I work almost exclusively on my IPad, where I am always signed in. But, I just checked my desk computer, where, for some arcane reason, I am NOT signed in. On that screen, I have: Article...Talk...(giant space)...Read..Edit...View history. But, when I signed in, it is the very same. (I didn't even get a pretty star!) I think my desktop runs on Chrome...not sure about the IPad. So, best to consult the experts at the Teahouse, as I am absolutely lost, here, with this technical matter. The Page tab provides important tools to editors, and I am distressed for you. I had this tab years ago, when I began editing, but this was, as I remember, always on the IPad. When you ask at the Teahouse, I will follow the conversation, because I would be "sunk" without the Page tab. (I am physically unable to sit at the desk computer, for any length of time, so my WP career would have been curtailed long ago...) As for Sandboxes, mine is like a cluttered assortment of handwritten notes, Post-It notes, etc., in a messy hodgepodge. Until the situation is resolved, I would be more than happy to be your "Page Tab" assistant editor. I am not a great researcher/writer, I mostly assist with small matters, and love to work on references. Keep me posted. Best wishes, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 05:10, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
You, Tribe of Tiger, have been very kind and I appreciate it. I'm glad to know that it is a case of me simply being dense. If you do lack articles with which to archive links, these are some for you to consider:
I am contacting the Teahouse and will let you know as soon as I complete the edit. I really do wish to know now to archive sources. With much appreciation,Hu Nhu (talk) 22:45, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
I've contacted the Teahouse, Tribe of Tiger. You can see it [HERE].Hu Nhu (talk) 23:08, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I have read and commented on your excellent post at the Teahouse...But, I am beginning to think that this tab only appears on "mobile-type" devices, as I don't have it on my desktop computer. But, as User:AlanM1 kindly pointed out, you can access "fix dead links" from the View History page, so this resolves your problem concerning archiving. I had absolutely forgotten that it was there, I am sorry! I think that some of the Teahouse hosts edit on mobile devices, like phones, so it will be interesting to see what some others have to say.
Well, I have learned something. I had no clue/hadn't noticed that the Page tab did not appear on every type of computer! I will do a bit of research, so I can tell you how to find some of the other Page tab features. Switching between screens is much easier on a desktop, rather imperfect on my @7 x 9 IPad. Trying to do this on a smartphone...I cannot imagine. At some point, my ancient "slide phone" will die, and I will have to get a gigantic smartphone. Of course, they are not much larger than my first calculator, from 1975/1976, and can run circles around my first behemoth of a 1983 computer. Sources, archiving...

I have not examined all the articles above, closely, just yet. But here, Tracy R. Norris, the way you are referencing using the "sfn" method, we cannot archive the sources. (Sfn works best for books, here on WP). Cited in this manner, they are showing up more like external links, vs. inline sources, and the system won't archive them. It is late for me, now, but I will get back to you....and fix Norris, so you will see what I mean. Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 09:37, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Thanks so much Tribe of Tiger. Someone just commented about correcting my use of sfn on the article I just wrote, Chalk paint. I had no idea this was a problem. You are very generous with your assistance and I appreciate what you've done. I am also very interested to see how the Teahouse responds to you.Hu Nhu (talk) 16:02, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
I see that you have not edited since 24 November. We received an answer at the Teahouse. Here's what you need to do. Go to Preferences (located at the top of any page.) Then, Gadgets. Under Appearance check the box, MoreMenu. Save. This should supply you with the helpful Page Tab. I can supply you with the entire Teahouse conversation, but AlanM1 discovered that my access to the Page Tab was a function of a readily available Gadget. Hope this helps you.
I am very sorry that I did not realize that the Page Tab was a Gadget that I had chosen long ago....and I sent you a wild goose chase of frustration. Kindest apologies, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 02:30, 1 December 2020 (UTC)
Hello again, Tribe of Tiger. Your apology is utterly unnecessary. You sent me on a journey in which I learned much. And more importantly, you did some marvelous work on an article in which I have put a great deal of effort. I have looked at the editing you did on New Albion and will follow it as a model to fix and archive other articles I've created. I absolutely appreciate your work--I know how tedious and significant it is. You are very kind and generous with you efforts. Many kind regards,Hu Nhu (talk) 20:18, 8 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks so very much for the kind words! I am so pleased to have helped you! The opportunity to help an excellent writer, by making a few technical edits, is very rewarding, and I have enjoyed reading your work!
There is one warning I must give you, which I should have mentioned before, in reference to archiving. When I became aware of this feature, I wondered why the sources for all articles were not automatically archived, by the WP software. It seems that archiving (stored in an article) markedly increases the download time for an article, which is a problem for readers who must pay (on a time basis) for internet access. I think this is because it increases the "size" of the article, and this may cause other sorts of access problems, such as a slow download time, in order to just read an article.
Often, I will archive all the website sources for an article. My understanding is that the sources are now stored offsite. Then, I "undo" my edit. The sources are still stored offsite, just in case a link goes dead, but the article is not so large. I have been doing this for so long, that I have forgotten some of the technical reasons, but I will ask for verification, and report back to you.
One thing I have found helpful. I have a subpage, (which is like a second Sandbox), which I named Ref Box. I can add a bare url between the ref tags, and run "expand bare urls", and copy the results into an article. Or, I can run "expand bare urls" and then run "fix dead links, archive all links" and add an archived citation for just that one reference, without having to archive a huge number of links in a large article. Does that make sense? It's not so bad to "fix dead links" (step one) and also ask to archive all links (sub-step one) for an article with twenty or so citations. But, some articles have hundreds of website citations, and it may not be feasible to store the archives for all of them, on one WP article.
My "Ref Box subpage" is marvelous for working on single bare refs, to add to an article. Since I am not writing articles from scratch, just adding information, this is quick and easy. Plus, if adding a minor newspaper, etc., I can add an archived source for just one ref. I may not be explaining this very well, so you can try it in your own Ref Box subpage, and see how this works. I am happy to answer questions!Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 03:29, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
I am still trying to work through some information regarding archiving, which I will convey to you. But, on another topic...you can set up a WP-only email address through GMail (or whatever). For instance, if you visit my userpage, over on the left (hopefully) you will see "email this user". I have a WP-only email address, that can be used, without compromising my personal identity or security. If you set up a similar email address, then we could exchange safe messages. This works well. For example, I recently needed a scan of a four page document. It couldn't be posted on WP, because of copyright concerns. But a WP friend scanned it and emailed it to me, so that I could use it as a reference for an article. Normally, I prefer to post information in the open, on WP. But, from time to time, an off-site exchange of information is desirable, or necessary, for copyright reasons. (I know you are busy with the upcoming wedding, hurrah! so I do not expect an immediate response.) Hope this makes sense. Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 01:59, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Chalk paint, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Onel5969 TT me 14:04, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Frankly, Onel5969, it is rather sad to see an editor with a GA and four DYK being presented with "If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article" and then "You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles." Why on earth would you present these boilerplate notices to an experienced editor? Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 06:32, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
Can Of Debi's design diary DIY chalk paint

Hello Onel5969--I am most distressed with the deletion of this page for a number of reasons, among them is that the article Chalk paint was not an advertisement and I was not given an opportunity to contest this before the article was deleted. What is ambiguous is why someone questions my integrity with the asserting that I wrote an unambiguous advertisement. Pictured in this post is a can of chalk paint I recently used. I bought it HERE. Online, you can find many other companies who make chalk paint and see HERE that chalk paint is widely available as evidenced with Home Depot's brand called Behr. This is only one of many companies that makes this type of paint.

I was also not given a reasonable amount of time to ensure the opportunity to respond. There is no evidence cited to support the unfounded assertion. I could have easily been pinged with a question or suggestion before the rash deletion and discourteous implications. As the article was deleted before I could look at it and no specifics were provided by the deletor, I am unable to address any legitimate concerns.

If one looks at the images on the page Chalk paint, one may see that I uploaded them; it was my very recent experience with this type of paint--not brand of paint--that prompted my inquiry looking as to an article about chalk paint on Wikipedia. There is none. This article was deleted in error, perhaps by someone who is unfamiliar with the material. It is a widely used material and readily available commercially or even homemade. It is also a subcategory type of paint. It is a worthy article considering the wide availability of the material and the notability it has.

The deleting administrator is not identified with this notice, and I do not know where to go to find that administrator's identity. So, to whom do I proceed with the request to speedily re-instate the article? Kind regards,Hu Nhu (talk) 17:10, 22 December 2020 (UTC).

Hu Nhu, hi. Sorry you feel that way. Wikipedia takes advertising very seriously, even if you did not write it with that intention. Since it's been deleted, I can no longer look at it, but my memory of it is that it read like a promotional brochure for the product, as well as the person who created it. You can always find out the admin's name by clicking on the red link, in the section title above, in this case, I'll ping them, so that they can read your response above, Jimfbleak. The timing is problematic, since it was a speedy delete, and not a prod, there is no designated time before the tag is applied and the article is deleted. Depending on the backlog, it can be days, other times it can be under an hour. Please be aware, my tagging it was in no way a comment on the notability of the material, simply the promotional tone of the article. You've gone through the AfC process in the past, might I suggest you continue to do so? Onel5969 TT me 17:33, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Onel5969 and Jimfbleak Please know that I, too, take advertising very seriously, do not engage in it, and will not engage in it. I reject any contrary notions. I also find it curious to see that the phrase promotional tone of the article (the objection noted in the previous paragraph which led to the tagging) is not used in the first paragraph--the actual tagging notification; however, I do see allegations of unambiguous advertising and spam. This was neither advertising nor spam. Again, the article was not about a specific product or brand--it is a type of paint variant and you may see others HERE.
Despite the implications otherwise, this was a good faith effort. And deleting the article without any sense of reasonable opportunity to address the matter was utterly unnecessary--74 minutes to respond should be regarded as inadequate. The post indicates I should have had that opportunity but in reality I was disallowed it. No specific details were provided regarding text, sources, nor tone. I could have certainly addressed concerns. Might I suggest that this could have been much better addressed in another manner than state I wrote an unambiguous advertisement? A slower, considered, hesitant application of the delete button would have served this matter well. There are alternatives than to assert my lack of good faith. This type of heavy-handedness (deletion and impugning assertions) should be avoided as it is regrettably damaging. Please reinstate this article and so I may make edits to address concerns. Or, allow me access to the article without it being reinstated, and I'm glad to submit it through the Afc process.Hu Nhu (talk) 22:34, 22 December 2020 (UTC)
Onel5969 and Jimfbleak I, too, am distressed by this. I read the original article with interest, as I was unfamiliar with chalk paint. But by reading the article and some of the refs, etc., I absolutely understood that this was a generalized product, which might have been "invented" by someone but was not a brand name. Chalk paint is equivalent to Latex paint, Tempera paint, or Oil paint, etc., etc. The article title was a description, not a brand name. I even found "Do It Yourself" (DIY) formulas, online...Surely, a generalized article, regarding a now-common paint product, should be contained within WP? Of course, I cannot now refresh my original memories of the article, but Hu Nhu has written well-referenced historical-type works, (one Good Article and four DYK articles) and is unlikely to engage in poorly-disguised commercial articles !
Hu Nhu, I am so, so sorry this has happened, and sincerely hope it can be resolved. Considering the amount of work you put into your fine historical articles, for example, I strongly suggest that you save every part and parcel, and every reference/citation of your work in an offsite "storage" area. Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 06:11, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
Hu Nhu, firstly, there is no requirement for discussion or warning with speedy deletion, that's the point of it. Secondly, whatever your intention, the tone was clearly promotional. You quote the paint's inventor, hardly an independent source, and say things like This is a product which may be successfully used by novices and professionals..., little surface preparation is necessary... Almost any interior or exterior surface, which are opinions, not facts, even if sourced, unless the source includes lab test results or their equivalent. I accept now that this was a GF article, and I'll restore at Draft:Chalk paint for improvement Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:43, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
Many thanks, Jimfbleak for restoring the article to a draft status. I fully understand that you were not required to do so and appreciate your efforts. I also appreciate your comments regarding the inventor and entirely agree; I'll wordsmith the article to bring it to an acceptable submission, and I'll do so through the Afc process. Also know, Onel5969, that I appreciate your assistance in changing the course of the article. Please understand that I support the Wikipedia vision, and despite the project's several flaws, I believe Wikipedia is a worthy matter. I am always prepared to collaborate with other editors which one may see with my past practices, and should you find concerns, have simple suggestions, or even random ideas for pondering, I welcome them. I have had three articles rejected, and after the reviewer commented on them, I agreed with their point of view. One may read my user page and see my comment about them: Oh well. . .that's ok. There is even one article, Charles Lee Bufford, that I created and wonder if it should be deleted--I now doubt the subject's notability.
It is the absence of opportunity to correct the chalk paint article, lack of specific reasons which accompanied rejection, and mistaken assumptions which led to the deletion that were bothersome. Tribe of Tiger succinctly identified my distress when she wrote that I was unlikely to engage in poorly-disguised commercial articles--this is very true. I am likely, however, to be in error on occasion and am eager to listen, collaborate, and rectify. And now, you've been very gracious in listening, and I will take this opportunity to correct the article and add to the value Wikipedia presents. Opportunity, discussion, and communication--even though not required--are valuable.
I also, Tribe of Tiger, appreciate your support and excellent idea of backing up content. I should have thought of that as I typically use Word when creating an article and write it using the Wikipedia code one finds on the edit page. However, I have always deleted these documents instead of saving them, but now I'll go to every article into which I've invested much and save them in a file on my computer (and cloud).
Please know, Jimfbleak and Onel5969, that I will not be able to get to the draft article until after the first of the year. My daughter is getting married on New Years Eve, and I am very busy with preparations for that moment--and considering that the reception (small and intimate) is at my home, I'll be busy for a few days after that, too. If that is a problem for the draft article, do let me know. I can always insert the draft into my sandbox and work on it later. Kind regards,Hu Nhu (talk) 17:18, 23 December 2020 (UTC)
Hu Nhu, congrats on your daughter's nuptials. There is no rush on working on drafts, they remain undisturbed for 6 months. After that time, if they have not been worked on they are eligible for deletion. Onel5969 TT me 19:50, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

Backing up content

It has been a few years, but I seem to remember that the Microsoft Notes program worked well for storing text, and did a better job at storing WP markup, versus Word. I think I recall being able to store sections of articles, with the all-important WP markup intact. After editing I could copy it back to the live WP article. When you are working on an article, it might be helpful to have a snapshot of the process, (Version 1, Version 1A etc.) in addition to the final product. Something to consider, after the New Year.

Best wishes to you, your daughter and your family. I must say it is a cheerful thought, that people are still falling in love and getting married, in these extraordinarily difficult times. Thanks so much for sharing this good news. I especially thank you for your kind words, in the above section. I am both touched and very grateful. Goodness knows, we all need some kindness! You have my respect and admiration and I value your comments. Kindest regards, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 02:24, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

Happy New Year!

I hope the wedding went well for you and your family! I have made some edits to the Draft:Chalk paint, although I see that you have moved it to your Sandbox. This works well, because you can review my edits, and decide if you want to keep them. You still have the original article in your Sandbox... Hope all is well, and let me know if I can help in any way. Best wishes, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 04:16, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello Tribe of Tiger! Many belated thanks for your message and greeting. The wedding went off so very well, all four daughters now married to very fine men. As you can tell, I've taken a break from Wikipedia--mostly due to my disappointment over the unfortunate assertions a number of weeks (months?) ago. The break has been good in that I've been making much sawdust in my shop and producing several nice results. (And I've even used chalk paint on a pub table I made.) I've not yet looked at the work you did on the article, but from what I've seen from you, I am confident the edits are good. I'll look at it and submit the article for consideration in the near future. I hope things are well with you considering the difficult situation we're in. At my home, we continue to muddle along. And really, all is well and life is so good.
Hu Nhu, I did not receive a notification of your message, (your "ping"), because you did not sign it! But, I was thinking of you and decided to check your contributions, to see what you were working on, and discovered this message.
Hu Nhu I am so pleased to know that the wedding was a success, and I congratulate you on raising four fine daughters, and am so happy that they have found good life partners. I never had children...but I know that my own mother was relieved and pleased by my choice of husband, when I married in 1980. (We are still married, through thick and thin, over 40 years later!)
WP can be a very difficult place to work. An editor does their best, with honest intentions, and is given short shrift and receives unjustified complaints and unfounded accusations of engaging in advertising. The world would be a better place if people complimented more often than they complained. I know you are discouraged, but please, please, do not abandon your work, if it still has the potential to give you satisfaction.
Sawdust in your workshop...sounds wonderful! What sort of woodwork do you do? My "artistic life" began with weaving (I have two floor looms) and progressed into dyeing, in my basement studio. One of the craft schools I attended, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts had a well-equipped woodworking studio, and it was fascinating to watch people turning beautiful bowls! My woodworking endeavors were building projects, using a circular saw, jigsaw, sander, etc., so I was amazed and envious of these talented people.
Anyway, thanks for the msg, and I am glad to hear that you are well. I hope you will return to editing, and if so, you might advise me about using chalk paint to repair a damaged, circa 1974, "Italian" carved & painted chest. Best wishes, Tribe of Tiger Let's Purrfect! 01:33, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
