PA Wing CAP

Hey Huntster, I created an article for Pennsylvania Wing Civil Air Patrol. I was wondering if you could stop by and proofread/edit/wave_your_magic_hand_over it. I know alot of the material is unsourced, but I'm wondering if you can think of any additional sections or if there's anything to obligatory or whatnot. Mount Mitchell - image gallery

Huntster:

On the Mt. Mitchell article, someone has tagged the article's image gallery with a gallery tag. I was under the assumption that this sort of tag was for text-less articles that contained only images, rather than for mere sections. Are image galleries no longer acceptable? (X-Posted) See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Photo_galleries. In general, galleries are no longer used in articles. I can find no good reason for this, but it does mean that when found, they tend to get removed from the page. My suggestion would be to pick a good representative photo to include in the infobox, maybe keeping one more for display below the infobox (if there is room), and move the rest to commons. The {{commons}} box used to link to Commons galleries is fairly eye-catching and should direct folks to the other images. I'd be more than happy to help transfer if that is what you decide to do. Alternately, you have the right to revert the addition of the tag, at which point discussion must move to the article talk page, but I kind of think that would be a losing battle. — Huntster (t • @ • c) 07:24, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

When did they change the guidelines? Man, I'm not moving images around every time the styleguide editors get creative. That subsection on photo galleries wasn't there when I started adding image galleries to articles earlier this year.

In any case, the Mt. Mitchell images aren't mine, but it's the first time I've seen that tag. My images are already on Commons, so I won't have too much trouble moving galleries I've created. I'll experiment with it later. Bms4880 (talk) 19:30, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

(X-Posted) I wouldn't put too much effort into it, especially if the commons images are already categorised properly. I don't know when the guidelines changed, but I agree...I'm not going to jump every time some small group push through their POV. What you have to consider is that there are vast numbers who do jump, and blindly put into action every change they see others make (perfect example is this recent move to kill off all date autoformatting now now now don't rest till it's done, which has resulted in citation templates losing all cohesion in date formatting). I was wondering if it would be possible to restore Image:DebbyRyan.jpg temporarily so I can look at the history. The uploader of this mage initially uploaded this with a source of "camera" but it was a non-free image and he used it in a biography article (Debby Ryan). After I pointed this out to him and tagged the image he changed source to Flicker (which is where it seems to be from) then uploaded a new image which was a copyvio. Then he went back and forth between the two. It's not the first time he's done this.[1] This editor has a long history of uploading non-free images with bad or missing FURs, invalid source data etc. He has now uploaded this image to commons, under another user name, claiming it was on his PC.[2] It was probably on his PC only because he had previously downloaded it from Flickr. I'm trying to get the image deleted since it appears to be a copyvio of this image and I'd like to be able to refer back to the Wikipedia image in support. I also think it's time something was done about this editor's ability to upload image. I've tried to help him but he just does not seem to want to follow policy. I'm not sure how to go about formally raising this issue but I'm sure I'll need an example and this is it. Otherwise I'll have to wait until the next time he tries to sneak a copyvio into an article, which probably won't be long. --AussieLegend (talk) 05:09, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Regarding this specific image, since the Flickr image is copyright, this image should certainly be deleted both here and at Commons. (X-Posted) Well, there is no way to selectively disable image-upload rights and there is no "school" we can send editors to. You may consider compiling significant evidence regarding this user and presenting it at WP:AN for additional eyes to consider the matter. Reg. Campus Attack

(X-Posted) Hi Nelatan, thank you for contributing to the MTSU article, however, I have reverted this addition. The event in question did not occur on the MTSU campus, but at an off-campus apartment complex. Even if it did happen on campus, I'm not sure it would warrant a mention on Wikipedia...this is after all an encyclopaedia, not a news clearing house. I actually work for MTSU Police in dispatch, and have been working with news agencies calling regarding this all evening. I confirmed with Murfreesboro police that they are the investigating agency. To be honest, I'm not sure how to respond to the mention in the news stories which states that six Indian students have been attacked in Tennessee...out of curiosity, do you know if any of these students attended MTSU, or were they at other schools? — Huntster (t • @ • c) 04:43, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

It's said in the article that the apartment was on campus so i felt it's worth mentioning. I don't go school down there, all what i have written is from the references. If you feel like reverting u may happily do so. Its not that 6 students are attacked in Tennessee, its the overall count throughout the US. The attack on the student may not be a big issue as a VT shootout, but I wanted to mention this as its becoming a really big issue back in India. (X-Posted) I certainly did not intend to marginalise the shooting, but it seemed inappropriate to mention this incident which occurred off-campus when other crimes that actually were on-campus have not been mentioned...they just aren't of an encyclopaedic nature. In any case, while I find it unfortunate that the Indian news stories contain that inaccuracy, I suppose it should be remarkable that the details presented are as accurate as they are, given the physical separation. In any other situation, I would congratulate you on your excellent sourcing of information :) I admit I'm still curious about the insinuation being made that these recent attacks have been intentionally focused toward Indian students, rather than being of a more random nature. Well, the only reason i wanted this information to show up on the article is to make people aware(especially International students) for the recent crime atrocities happening at the universities. Most of them come to universities seeing their flashy websites or some non reliable information(friends, ads, collage senior etc) without even being well aware of the social situation around the campus. A news is just for one day but, articles on Wikipedia stay long. Considering most of the aspiring students come in here to read about the university, I am just educating them about the life on campus.(My intentions are not directed towards the university, but the society around it). Appreciation

(X-Posted) Hi Ched, just wanted to drop you a line regarding television episodes and their place on Wikipedia. I read your page, and the wiki subpage, and wanted to comment on the "community members prefering not to have individual shows listed" line. It really isn't a matter of not wanting individual shows...rather, it was decided a year ago or so that if television episodes were to have articles here, they needed to show real-world relevance and notability (along with reliable citations, as that is Wikipedia's policy) rather than just giving an episode summary, bits of trivia, and personal observations about the show in question. Anything, episode, character, etc, that displays that relevance and notability is welcome on the website. As Sgeureka has mentioned, there are several SG episode articles that are considered amongst the best articles on the site..."200" is a Featured Article, four are Good Articles, and one more is being proposed for GA status. If you want to write episode articles (for any series), use those as guidelines.

I strongly recommend you continue with your editing...don't be discouraged because this one venture didn't work out (I can't tell you how many times my edits were undone or reworked when I first started here...that's just how we learn!). Take it slow; start with smaller edits across a variety of articles and topics to get the feel for things, and work your way up as you learn more about Wiki operations. Hey Huntster,

just wanted to stop by and say thanks for the kind words and encouragement on wiki-editing. Still very new yet, only registered back in Nov., (but been a reader for a lot longer), so it's nice to get such great feedback so early into my efforts. I do understand the guidelines and such, and realize that the Stargate regular editors simply attempt to hold their standards to a higher level than some of the other sections. I've also noticed recent changes in the fiction policies going from a 4-prong guideline to a somewhat more relaxed 3-prong approach. There are many areas I'll be editing in; NASCAR, movies, computers, TV, Star Trek, etc., so it's not like I feel like I'm being chased off or anything. I'll keep an eye on the Stargate project, and maybe even fix a typo here and there if I see one. I noticed your home / user page is much cleaner and more organized than 99% of the others here .. my compliments on that. 150+ IQ and your in Law Enforcement? I volunteer for a local Emergency Response Team that supports our PD and VFD, so I KNOW you ain't in it for the money ... lol. Love TN. as well, spent many a good time there, in fact will be working my way through there this coming spring. Also noticed that you're an wiki-admin. God love ya buddy. I was a network admin for 5 years, but at least I could go confront my users face to face. I understand that wikipedia struggles with growing too fast, and keeping things verifiable and accurate, and in that respect I don't envy your efforts in the least. I appreciate the daunting task you guys face, and I'll make every attempt to stay off the grid as I edit. As for alignment, there is no specific wiki mark-up for left, center or right, and for good reason...we want to keep prose naturally aligned unless there is a critical reason otherwise. In fact, prose should generally avoid most formatting, save for bolding, italics, wikilinks and some templates. Strive for simplicity...not only in display, but in code as well so others can easily edit. Only two reasons come to mind when text should be centred in the normal prose: long quotes, in which case use the {{cquote}} template which will auto-format everything for you; and tables, which can be manipulated in various ways (see WP:TABLE). Wikipedia respects HTML (including <center> and CSS, and is very easily malleable, as Help:Wikitext examples shows (lots of good stuff there). CSS is, in fact, heavily used in tables, templates, and many other locations...even more than normal HTML.

Okay, that was way more than you asked for, sorry. And please forgive me if it sounds like I'm talking down to you or covering ground you are already familiar with. There are so many things I could discuss, from how to handle regional spelling differences to a warning to AVOID AT ALL COST the discussions at WP:MOSNUM (lulz). That was EXACTLY what I was looking for ... not really to change any formatting on an article, more for a table, or link line at end of page. Never even dawned on me to try html (although now that you mention it, I do remember seeing something about it very early on in my reading about creating a first article.) GREAT link .. the Manual of Style stuff ... My mother was an English teacher (not that she passed much on to me), and while I was surprised to see such heated debates, I guess I shouldn't have been. I guess you should never put a bunch of English majors in the same room huh? That is as enjoyable as reading the Fox News / MSNBC talk pages, or any of the political pages for that matter. It's probably why I've started with movies and TV I guess, while I enjoy the subject matter, I'm not gonna get ticked off about it ... life is way too short. (and I didn't take it as talking down at all!!!) didn't know about the cquote thing either ... but I would think that is primarily used for fairly long quotes of several lines huh? Once you save the page, you'll need to do a hard refresh, as it mentions at the top of the saved page. Now, anywhere a user name appears, whether in a signature, or edit history page, etc, the name will be highlighted in a bright blue box. AfD of Civil Air Patrol Ranger Tape

I've spruced up the page a bit - added a few references and what. I'd like to remove the AfD nomination. As far as being a PAWG only thing, it is actually a national item, only few other wings in CAP have the funding or other resources to operate Ranger Programs. See this link for details. (X-Posted) While you have indeed improved the article, the main problem is that it does not assert notability, and has no third party sources showing such (all that you added were primary...first party...sources). That is one of the keys to keeping the article around. If you can find some news sources, etc, that meet our WP:Verifiability policy, I'll be more than happy to cancel the AfD. (X-Posted) I saw your comment on User talk:Fightin' Phillie, thought I would respond. Obviously I've been following this little exchange, and had my own say in it. There's no way to prevent someone from copy and pasting from one talk to another, at least no technical way. You are, of course, within your right to remove any of this material from your own talk page. It appears that the above user has departed from the site (at least by his own words), so unless he comes back and maintains his disruptive attitude, I would consider the whole thing over. If he does continue, and doesn't change his blatantly uncivil and provocative tone, I'll consider blocking him. That said, I would encourage you to be a little more civil yourself, if only to take the high road in the argument. Deletion of Articles

Before you delete more of my articles, could you perhaps suggest why they're being deleted and give me warning? I went to continue working on Phillip Neuweiler and it was gone. When I write, I write it down first and assume that someone will point out any problems later (if there are any), not just delete it; especially from my userspace. Sexually Transmitted Infections In Pakistan

I believe that this page does, in fact, fit WP:CSD G12 which states "text pages that contain copyrighted material with no credible assertion of public domain, fair use, or a free license." I cannot find a requirement for a URL. (X-Posted) The problem is that this could simply be the author "signing" his work. Without a URL, there is no way to determine if someone copied from another source, or if this material is just an essay someone wrote to Wikipedia, which is not uncommon. And yes, I did do several searches looking for evidence that this was copied from somewhere, and found none.
