Orphaned non-free media (Image:Phoenix Movies.svg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Phoenix Movies.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:09, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Phoenix TV logo removal[edit]

All non-free images have to pass the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria since they are not released under a free content license. Because of that we have to limit non-free content. Simply adding a bunch of logo's does not add to the article. The logo's are almost identical to one another. One logo should be sufficient. Garion96 (talk) 19:20, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, I stopped those images from showing up on your user page. Per WP:NFCC#9 that is not allowable, only in article space. Garion96 (talk) 19:25, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:Aljazeera.svg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Aljazeera.svg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

This is an automated notice by FairuseBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. --08:55, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Hytar, thanks for responding. If possible could you show me how I get the party colours in one column, and the party name in the next? I have seen it elsewhere (such as London Assembly election, 2008 and Preston Council election, 2006). I am pretty confident with tables but just not with doing this! Astro MAX[edit]

What of Astro MAX, the personal video recorder? I've heard a new variant of the Astro MAX decoder (some thought it has been already discontinued) is being looked into. Astro MAX enables Astro viewers to record programmes, and the new variant is expected to offer up to 100 hours of recording facility as well as video on demand (VOD) that will suit customers' tastes. 121.120.173.2 (talk) 19:24, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: File:KBS World.svg[edit]

File:KBS World.svg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:KBS World.svg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:KBS World.svg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. Thanks for the SVG fix![edit]

Re your message:

I noticed your edit on the SVG source of this file, and I was really impressed. I could tell from your user page that you extensively create/modify pictures on Wikipedia, including vector graphics. Glad that you improved mine this time, truly appreciate it.

If you don't mind, could you help me with the other 3 SVG graphics? I'm referring to this, this and this. All those graphics were made manually, meaning I was arranging those hexagons, naming them and trimming coordinates in the source, so that file sizes were kept small. I believe there is a way to create this sort of diagrams less painstakingly, just that I haven't come across it.

Could you advise me on representing by-elections clearly in the diagrams? Should texts be added for that matter? Also, what do you think about these pictures being transferred to Commons, with additional 2 sets of translated versions, in Bahasa Melayu and Chinese? Hytar (talk) 08:56, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Demonstration of suggestions
Thanks for the kind words, Hytar; I try my best :)
I would find labels for the by-elections useful, but do get a second opinion. I prefer multiple layers of information in a single diagram but some Wikipedians find mine too cluttered.
I normally upload my images to Commons, though they have stricter policies e.g. on the corporate logos you've made.
I've done similar changes to the 3 images you linked. I must say I really like your idea of using hexagons for equal-area representation and also using more saturated colours with a border to show changes.
Did you use a script or program to generate the SVG? If not, kudos on your great effort! Here are some suggestions to reduce the work:
  1. Write a script. I use Perl to generate mine.
  2. Use defs blocks and xlink:href to make each hexagon a separate unit which you can place using the transform attribute.
  3. "Cheat" by approximating hexagons with squares with corners cut off, so their coordinates are much simpler.
These techniques are in used in this SVG image.
Let me know if you'd like to collaborate on any new SVG visualisations you have in mind.

Re:Orphaned non-free image File:TV9logo.png[edit]

Sorry your TV9 old logo not up to date and I'm sorry I have change the logo of your old TV9. Before I upload a new logo TV9, I refer first of logos TV9 according to TV9 official website & I am not the any kind of fool around people want to change the logo TV9.Visit www.tv9.com.my to see for yourself whether the same logo or not I upload that logo in wikipedia

Nasir36 (talk) 1:02, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

First, I'm glad you finally replied and thanks for doing so. I'll let your version of the logo be displayed on that article, but please be aware of a few things.
  • I'm not changing the TV9 logo. There isn't a lot of difference between my vector version of the logo and yours. The shape is the same, the colour is the same. OK, maybe they added a grey border around the "9" and bevelled it to make it look "3D", but those are decorative instead of making it a totally new logo. Same goes to the TV3 logo, which I hope you won't replace for the reasons mentioned.
  • The slogan is unnecessary, simply because this changes over time and it's not part of the logo.
  • Your version of the TV9 logo wasn't traced using Inkscape and not quite a recreation of the high-resolution logo on the Media Prima website. Please change the non-free media information and use rationale of the logo.
Unless TV9 changes its logo as often as TV1 and TV2, it's my opinion that we shouldn't bother about how the logo is modified to look prettier. Cosmetic changes doesn't change the fact that it is still the same logo that TV9 used since its rebranding from Channel 9. Hope you're clear with that. Meet-up: Editors from Malaysia[edit]

Hello! You might or might not have seen me around here as I've not been active in Wikipedia the past few months. Before leaving for NS, it was my intention to form a Malaysian user group. I'm still very much interested in forming the group. However, before forming the group, I would love to organize a meet-up between editors of the Malaysian editing community to test the waters and hear what you guys might have to say. To my knowledge, there has not been a Wikipedia meet-up in this country before. I don't mind organizing the meet-up but need to know if anyone is interested in joining the meet-up. So... please reply and let me know if you would be interested in joining a meet-up and your ideas/thoughts about a user group. Thank you.

Dewan Rakyat results of the 2013 Malaysian General Election (equal-area representation)

Hi Hytar,

In case you're interested, I've updated your graphic for the 2013 election, and also tidied up the SVG code for it and the original to ease editing.

Cheers, cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 12:39, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thanks Cmglee! The source code does look better with the whitespaces. I planned to do a minor edit to this file, but not too soon due to RL responsibilities. I suppose you're also working on the state assembly seats too?
It's interesting too that the election dashboard by SPR contains raw data that are quite easily extracted. I already have several spreadsheets of those data ready to be processed. Hytar (talk) 15:04, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks and you're welcome! Besides adding spaces, I made the hexagon an IRI element, so that it can be replicated using the use tag and an editor can change all the hexagons by altering the master while also reducing the file size. I was going to make the state assembly seats but State Election Results of the 2013 Malaysian General Elections is incomplete and I don't have the data readily available. Where can I get the spreadsheets? cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 12:53, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I got the JSON data from here, mainly results.js. Actually a few more JSONs are needed to create the spreadsheet I temporarily placed in Skydrive (link removed). Do inform me if there's any problem accessing the file. Hytar (talk) 00:35, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Equal-area representation of the results with each hexagon representing one seat
Many thanks, Hytar. I've downloaded the data and I'll update the graphic tomorrow if I've some time. cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 21:03, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated your graphic as on the right to your data. I'm not sure what to do about Sarawak, though, so I've kept the 2006 values. Any thoughts? cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 13:13, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your help again! On Sarawak, you can refer to File:Dewan Undangan Negeri 2008 Equal Area (changes).svg. I have earlier updated the file with the state's election result of 2011.
You can retain the STAR label, but please change "SNAP & Independent" to just "Independent", since there's only one independent candidate in all state assemblies now (which is in Sarawak).
By the way, on the Dewan Rakyat 2013 file, can you hide the "Independent" label? For now, it seems to be redundant in the cartogram. Hytar (talk) 06:28, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done, thanks! I couldn't update http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dewan_Rakyat_2013_Equal_Area.svg as it is locked because it was used on the Chinese Wikipedia main page, so I updated http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dewan_Rakyat_2013_Equal_Area.svg . I think the change is small enough that it's not worth the trouble of getting it unlocked. cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 13:01, 15 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Now that the file on Commons is automatically unlocked, I have helped you to update the file there. By the way, I came across this video (now private) that featured the Dewan Rakyat cartogram around the 28-second mark, and a much extended one at 5:07. My guess is that the video editor found this picture from the Chinese Wikipedia, along with snapshots of election infoboxes there. Hytar (talk) 12:21, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Hytar. Nice to see our work being used outside Wikipedia. In case you weren't aware, it was also on the 9 May 2013 main page of the Chinese Wikipedia (link to news template as they don't have a main page archive). cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 11:32, 25 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I noticed it a few days after the election. =) Hytar (talk) 12:53, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rearrangement[edit]

I have updated the cartogram on Commons by rearranging the hexagons, causing the file dimensions to be slightly larger.

As you mentioned above, you have separately uploaded the cartogram to the English Wikipedia, effectively unlinking it from Commons. You can check out the new version before deleting the en.wikipedia copy. (I believe that's the way to relink the file to Commons?) Hytar (talk) 12:53, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good work on rearranging the hexagons! My concern is that it is now harder to compare it with the 2008 results, unless you were also considering rearranging the 2008 cartogram. Before the change, I could open each in one tab and Ctrl+Tab to switch between them. I don't know how many readers might want to do that, though. cmɢʟee୯ ͡° ̮د ͡° ੭ 19:04, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. I didn't know how much I rearranged until I compare them. (Quite a lot, it turns out.)
It's all right, I can update the 2008 file based on the 2013 one. I suppose you can now remove the en.wikipedia copy? Or do you want to wait until I update the 2008 cartogram? Hytar (talk) 05:14, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Colour scheme for Malaysian politicians, candidates and their parties[edit]

Hi Hytar, I received your message regarding the colour scheme for Malaysian politicians, candidates and their respective parties. Actually I am opened to any new suggestions on improving the current colour schemes, etc. Your recommendations for colours for STAR and SAPP parties is interesting:

Colour Sample Contrast
ratios
#CED4F2 BN (UMNO) 5.82, 3.77
#F2CECE PR (DAP) 5.89, 3.82
#CEF2CE PR (PAS) 6.99, 4.54
#CEF2F2 PR (PKR) 7.15, 4.64
#F2F2CE SAPP (PMS) 7.46, 4.84
#ECCEF2 STAR (PRN) 5.96, 3.87
#DAE0FF BN (UMNO) 6.53, 4.24
#FFDADA PR (DAP) 6.62, 4.29
#F3DAFF STAR (PRN) 6.61, 4.29

As for the readability issue, can you elaborate on that further. So far we have not been using any dark colours in the background, just soft colours so it is easier to read. For example, we haven't use dark blue for BN parties or dark green for PAS which is their actual party colours.

Cheers.. Lazybugger13 (talk) 06:34, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delayed reply... The colours for SAPP and STAR are based on the GE13 dashboard from the EC, since I wouldn't easily made up the colours myself. After getting the colour hues, I refer to the large table in Help:Using colours to suggest the colours in the right-side table.
True, using dark bgcolor isn't preferable, since it needs light-coloured text to work and wastes code for styling. Yet, not any soft colour will do. I added a column for contrast ratios in the table, to quantify the contrast between text (links) and background. That was what I meant by "hard to read" earlier, but it could also be my monitor and eyes playing tricks.
Anyway, the W3C accessibility guideline recommends at least 4.5 for the contrast ratio. I edited the table to add in alternative colours of higher contrast ratio, although not quite at 4.5 for red links. Personally, I prefer  #CED4F2  over  #DAE0FF  and don't mind the lower ratio, since red links over coloured background are rare in the articles you edit. Hytar (talk) 03:46, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Hytar. Sorry for the late reply as work commitments have been preventing me from committing my time to get back to you on the colour scheme discussion. I have taken note of the colours you have suggested for change, so let's discuss this further.

These are the current colours of both Barisan and Pakatan Parties that are being used in the results page of both the parliament and state assemblies (please note that I have used these colours since the Sarawak state elections in 2011):

Barisan -  #B0CEFF  PKR -  #74E4D5  DAP -  #FFB6B6  PAS -  #CCFFCC

Here is an example of a colours being used in the results table(I have used the for examples of the leaders and their respective parties, adding links to the individuals, coalitions and parties):

# Constituency Winner Party Votes Opponent(s) Party(ies) Votes Majority Incumbent
BN 1 | PR 3 | Independent 0
P85 Pekan Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak BN-UMNO 51,278 Mohd Fariz Musa PR–PKR 15,665 35,613 Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak
(BN-UMNO)
P43 Bagan Lim Guan Eng PR–DAP 46,466 Chua Teik Siang BN–MCA 12,307 34,159 Lim Guan Eng
(PRDAP)
Lim Kim Chu IND 328
P44 Permatang Pauh Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim PR–PKR 37,090 Mazlan Ismail BN–UMNO 25,369 11,721 Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim
(PRPKR)
Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin IND 201
P37 Marang Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang PR–PAS 42,984 Yahya Khatib Mohamad BN–UMNO 37,860 5,124 Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang
(PRPAS)

In my opinion I don't see it necessary to change the colours to accommodate red or broken links or even to highlight the different coalitions listed using the red font.

Regarding using the following colours for the independent parties:

STAR -  #ECCEF2  SAPP -  #F2F2CE

I am in agreement with these two new colours. My opinion here is that SAPP's colour needs a bit of a tweak in terms of brightness.

Now you have provided a different set of colours you wish to used to comply with the accessibility guidelines:

Barisan -  #CED4F2  PKR -  #CEF2F2  DAP -  #F2CECE  PAS -  #CEF2CE

Let's see how these colours will look like in a results table setting:

# Constituency Winner Party Votes Opponent(s) Party(ies) Votes Majority Incumbent
BN 1 | PR 3 | Independent 0
P85 Pekan Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak BN-UMNO 51,278 Mohd Fariz Musa PR–PKR 15,665 35,613 Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak
(BN-UMNO)
P43 Bagan Lim Guan Eng PR–DAP 46,466 Chua Teik Siang BN–MCA 12,307 34,159 Lim Guan Eng
(PRDAP)
Lim Kim Chu IND 328
P44 Permatang Pauh Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim PR–PKR 37,090 Mazlan Ismail BN–UMNO 25,369 11,721 Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim
(PRPKR)
Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin IND 201
P37 Marang Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang PR–PAS 42,984 Yahya Khatib Mohamad BN–UMNO 37,860 5,124 Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang
(PRPAS)

Personally I see a lot of differences especially contrasts between the BN, PAS and PKR colours, not so on DAP. From afar of maybe a distance of 1 metre your eyes might think that the PAS and PKR colours are similar unless you take a closer look. What do you think so far of the differences? Like you said before that it might be your monitor or your eyes playing tricks. But like I said before these present colours have been utilised since 2011.

Also thank you for highlighting the changes being made to the parliament results page. I will be removing the notes column(I can't believe why people would include that since we have already have an incumbent column) and reverting and changing the colours to what will be agreed upon in finalisation of our discussion. This is after get some time from work.Lazybugger13 (talk) 06:29, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your detailed response. I would use up most of the morning writing that much...
There are major changes to the parliament results page, so the "not good choice of colours" yesterday are gone. I agree that the Notes column is extraneous (self-analysis can be done without spelling out the obvious).
The use of templates to colour the table now is interesting. It acts like CSS: change in colour are applied to all elements tied to it. I'm okay with that, since Wikipedia might render it similarly to explicit bgcolor definition, but it bloats the article source size. Colours for BERJASA, KITA, SWP etc. are also added, which I don't know how helpful they can be in a colour-heavy table.
I like your choice of colours, and admit that mine is not saturated enough to quickly differentiate them. Here is my suggested colour palette by slightly increasing the saturation, and the remaining parties that contested:
BN -  #C0CAF2  PKR -  #CAF2F2  DAP -  #F2C0C0  PAS -  #C0F2C0  SAPP -  #F2F2CA  STAR -  #E8C0F2  BERJASA -  #CAE2CA  SWP -  #E2E2C0  KITA -  #F2DAC0  PCM -  #CADAE2  PSM -  #E2CAE2  MUPP -  #F2DADA
Although I know it's quite pointless editing over colours, I feel the current colour scheme isn't very friendly on the eyes by being saturated. Also, although I hope the colour change can be done in templates, the miscellaneous colours that I chose might only apply to the 2013 election, and doesn't look right when used alone in other articles. I can see how I'm conflicting myself with the statements above, but that's the nature of discussing colour preferences I guess? Hytar (talk) 13:25, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Getting back to our discussion, let's summarise the colours that have been suggested so far.

The original colours used for the 4 main parties in previous templates are:

Barisan -  #B0CEFF  PKR -  #74E4D5  DAP -  #FFB6B6  PAS -  #CCFFCC

The second set of colours suggested that you have suggested are:

Barisan -  #CED4F2  PKR -  #CEF2F2  DAP -  #F2CECE  PAS -  #CEF2CE

Finally the 3rd set of colours suggested are:

BN -  #C0CAF2  PKR -  #CAF2F2  DAP -  #F2C0C0  PAS -  #C0F2C0

These are how the 3rd set of suggested colours will look in the table.

# Constituency Winner Party Votes Opponent(s) Party(ies) Votes Majority Incumbent
BN 1 | PR 3 | Independent 0
P85 Pekan Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak BN-UMNO 51,278 Mohd Fariz Musa PR–PKR 15,665 35,613 Haji Mohammad Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak
(BN-UMNO)
P43 Bagan Lim Guan Eng PR–DAP 46,466 Chua Teik Siang BN–MCA 12,307 34,159 Lim Guan Eng
(PRDAP)
Lim Kim Chu IND 328
P44 Permatang Pauh Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim PR–PKR 37,090 Mazlan Ismail BN–UMNO 25,369 11,721 Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim
(PRPKR)
Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin IND 201
P37 Marang Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang PR–PAS 42,984 Yahya Khatib Mohamad BN–UMNO 37,860 5,124 Dato' Seri Haji Abdul Hadi Awang
(PRPAS)

I am in support of using these colours:

BN -  #C0CAF2  PKR -  #CEF2F2  DAP -  #FFB6B6  PAS -  #C0F2C0

I would retain one of the originals and use 3 new ones that have been suggested by you.

As for the colours to be used for the other parties, I am in full support for their implementation. I wouldn't have chosen them in the first place, but for the present it should be suitable:

SAPP -  #F2F2CA  STAR -  #E8C0F2  BERJASA -  #CAE2CA  SWP -  #E2E2C0  KITA -  #F2DAC0  PCM -  #CADAE2  PSM -  #E2CAE2  MUPP -  #F2DADA

I saw in one of the results pages that they are using this colour for independents:

IND -  #CCCCCC

Do you with this colour scheme or we should leave this as blank?

If there is an agreement here, how about doing a test run using these colours on the following page: Members of the Dewan Rakyat, 12th Malaysian Parliament. I was half-way through with fixing this page and adding the individual component parties.Lazybugger13 (talk) 05:25, 10 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good news! Thanks to ASDFGH's hard work in replacing all bgcolor with templates, many articles are styled according to the scheme agreed above.
However, I want to suggest a few changes and list down other changes I noticed.
  • DAP -  #FFB6B6  to  #F8C0C0 . Red might look duller than blue or green in the same saturation level, thus I increased the saturation slightly while not deviating much from the other colours. (Sorry for changing your original choice...)
  • KITA -  #F2DAC0  to  #F2D6C0 , PCM -  #CADAE2  to  #DAE2EA , MUPP -  #F2DADA  to  #F2D8D8 . Slight changes to make differentiating colours in tables easier.
  • IND -  #CCCCCC  to  #E6E6E6 . That's according to the template. Initially I wanted to drop bgcolor for independents, but the shading now looks fine and not standing out like the previous grey.
Since the formatting is no longer a huge issue, you can now focus on the content, like the component parties you mentioned earlier. Hytar (talk) 09:59, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I will be adding the component parties to Members of the Dewan Rakyat, 12th Malaysian Parliament shortly. As for the recent changes you have suggested, let's go with what you have in mind and hopefully there shouldn't be any more objections or last minute changes. In the meantime let's summarise all the colours that have been discussed so far.
BN -  #C0CAF2  PKR -  #CEF2F2  DAP -  #F8C0C0  PAS -  #C0F2C0  SAPP -  #F2F2CA  STAR -  #E8C0F2  BERJASA -  #CAE2CA  SWP -  #E2E2C0  KITA -  #F2D6C0  PCM -  #DAE2EA  PSM -  #E2CAE2  MUPP -  #F2D8D8  IND -  #E6E6E6
Will you be able to do the honours and make the necessary changes to the political party templates - template to the ones that have not been amended. Otherwise I will be willing to make the changes. I am also happy that we have moved from the bgcolor format to templates, makes it easier to fix future articles.Lazybugger13 (talk) 07:55, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Creating Maps[edit]

Hi Hytar,

I noticed on the WikiProject Map templates page that you had edited a map for the Arab-Israeli conflict. I was curious to know how you are creating maps. What is the process and are you using any kind of external software or design template? Please let me know when you get the chance. Thanks for all your help!

Subbupedia95 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Subbupedia95 (talkcontribs) 21:33, 29 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Subbupedia95, thanks for your interest. For a general idea of creating world/regional maps, you can refer to the links in File:BlankMap-World6.svg.
I would prefer to edit the SVG map using a text editor (some coding background would be useful). When I need better visualization (like position and coordinates), I'll open the edited SVG in Inkscape.
So far, I don't find the need to have templates, but you can check out SVG locator maps (Commons) for useful map templates. Hytar (talk) 10:07, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hytar, Thanks for the response. I took a look at the links you suggested, and also looked at the code on some SVG files. I am able to understand it because I do shave some basic coding background, but it seems like it would be very complicated to draw, say, a color-coded map of different countries, since countries have highly non-geometric shapes. Is there any kind of in-built library by which a user can generate maps with color-coded countries? Or does all of the information need to be put in manually? Is this how all of the SVG world maps on Wikipedia are generated?

Once again, thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it!Subbupedia95 (talk) 23:24, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

True, drawing a map from scratch is difficult, that's why most of the maps in Wikipedia are built from a base map. It could come in a variety of projections, but one is chosen that best suits the intended context. A great portion of the SVG code is what I call "noise" that makes up the shapes in a map (countries, borders, rivers etc.). The useful information in it is the ID that differentiate one group of shapes with another (like two-letter country code), and the styles that are applied to the group of shapes (mostly colour fill).
One example is another map I created here. The colours are defined in the CSS <style> block and text are added at the bottom of the code. The middle part is largely unchanged, save for a few lines I need to modify so that the colour fill works. Note that the blank SVG world map is being edited by people quite often, and might not be error-free even though it displays correctly.
About the Arab-Israeli conflict map, it is also based on the blank world map with a few tweaks. I enlarged the map with the transform attribute, removed the countries not in the viewing box, moved up one country into the box (Comoros), and insert a simplified world map on the lower left corner (from wiki of course).
There might be scripts out there that provide more automated ways to modify the SVG, producing the maps you want, but I'm not searching for those. I'm interested to know what maps you have in mind, although I can't guarantee I could help you create them. Hytar (talk) 10:50, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Non-breaking spaces[edit]

Hi Hytar, please do not remove non-breaking spaces ("&nbsp;") from articles, as you did at Squall. Non-breaking spaces help make formatting consistent on Wikipedia. Graham87 06:58, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK, sorry about that. I'll take care in future edits. Thanks for explaining. Hytar (talk) 07:06, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Broken TZ pages[edit]

Your edit of 15 February 2014 removed TZ names from the TZ database, but Wikipedia articles bearing the deleted TZ names still exist and presently render as broken templates (e.g. PST8PDT and EST5EDT). Perhaps these pages should be redirects to pages bearing the official names. I only poked my nose into this to figure out if it was vandalism or involved a quick fix. I hereby toss the torch over to you. — MaxEnt 00:14, 22 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing it out. I didn't know about that dependency. Anyway it was taken care of since June 2015. Hytar (talk) 09:56, 7 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
