Evaluating an Article - Molecular Genetics

Hi Ian! I am trying to submit an article evaluation for my class. I followed the instructions according to the Wikipedia course/page, but my article eval is not showing up on the article's talk page. Is it supposed to show up on the talk page or can my instructor see the evaluation within the Evaluating an Article template page that has been published? Hello Ian, I did a draft on my group project last night on the group's sandbox draft portion and I could not find it anymore. I did click submit for a draft review. GAN Susan Kauzlarich

Hi Ian, hope all is well! I've shared this with Women in Red but I was just thinking you might also have some thoughts. In a nutshell, I just got a response on my very first GAN nom for Prof Susan Kauzlarich @ UC Davis. You can take a look on the talk page Susan Kauzlarich. I don't mind pursuing things further for this (or any other GAN) but I was a bit surprised by the justifications and feedback. Is this in line with what one might usually expect? Also, are GAN reviewers usually part of an article's relevant project groups (for instance a reviewer for this article would be be affiliated w/ Wikipedia: Chemistry or Wikipedia: Women in Science). thanks!Nanobright (talk) 18:46, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Article talk pages for course discussions

Ian -- what do you think about students using an article talk page to discuss their progress and goals for editing, such as #11-13 here? There are several others like this. I sense each course should have its own talk discussions "behind the scene" before editing an article. Otherwise, article talk pages get too broad and social, and are a burden for specific topics to be covered. Do talk page rules exist for students having course discussions without going to the live article talk page? Thanks. Ok to respond here. --Zefr (talk) 20:51, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

Personally I think discussions about article editing should occur in the most open forum possible, but I realise that doesn't work well for students editing. Peer reviews, on the other hand, don't belong on talk pages. In the past we weren't specific enough about where to leave them, but our current instructions say to use a sandbox or user talkpage. But because even this doesn't seem to work always, we're changing the process so that students will click a link and go straight to a sandbox with pre-loaded prompts. Hopefully that will lead to less confusion.
As for the idea of a class-specific talk page - the idea appeals to me, but I'm not sure how it would work given the way students interact with Wikipedia (or don't). Ryan and Elysia did try something like that in a different context, with a much more focused group - I will talk to them about their experience, and see whether they think there's something useful we can adapt from that. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:15, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
Hi @Ian (Wiki Ed):@Zefr:, I posted this on the WP:MED talk page after noticing numerous lengthy peer reviews and assignment-like notes being added to med article talk pages that I follow. I personally prefer to encourage students to keep the peer to peer planning discussions off the article talk pages and rather encourage the use of the sandboxes for course work. For courses that I teach, I prefer that only final content is added to talk pages (before updating the article itself), and the conversations be similar to those that we have with any other Wikipedian who is interested in making a change and wants to get community consensus. I too like Zefr's idea of project pages to hold the course discussion if the instructor prefers not to use the sandbox. Thanks for tagging me Zefr, JenOttawa (talk) 22:53, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

GMO articles

Hi Ian. Saw a few Wiki Ed notices pop up on some of my watchlisted pages and noted you as the content expert. Just a heads up that one student in particular at Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of Florida/Genetical Ethics (Fall 2019) has been assigned a bunch of articles that are under discretionary sanctions (Genetically modified animal, Genetically modified mammal, and AquAdvantage salmon). Aside from being quite a large bite for a student to chew on they may run into issues with the added limitations applied by the discretionary sanctions. The area has been pretty quiet (although I am only just starting to return from a long wiki break so Tryptofish is probably in a better position to provide the current climate) so it is possible they could edit there quite happily. Still it is probably best they are made aware of what is required; it is the standard DS plus 1rr and some strictly enforced wording regarding health and safety. I would actually welcome some new editors in this topic area and as long as they tread carefully around the health and safety stuff they should be alright. However, it may not be the ideal place for a student to start off. Regards AIRcorn (talk) 21:15, 2 October 2019 (UTC)

Yes, this is actually the same class that I pointed out a bit above in #GMOs again. I agree with Aircorn, and I really think that it is playing with fire to involve class projects in this area. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:21, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Thanks Aircorn and Tryptofish (and thanks for the earlier note, Tryptofish). I've been keeping an eye on the class - with a new instructor, there's always an element of waiting to see how they're handling things. I'm going to follow up with the instructors and get them to either steer their students in a better direction, or prepare them for the environment they're trying to work in. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:39, 4 October 2019 (UTC)
Good, thanks. I've considered giving the DS templates to the students, but I've decided not to for now. If I see problematic edits, I probably will template them, but I'll also let you know. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:23, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

Beginning Project

Good afternoon Ian,

I am beginning my wiki article project for Professor Sartorius' Caribbean History class and I wanted to edit the J'ouvert page. So far I have found a few secondary sources exploring the origins of j'ouvert and Carnival as a whole through my university's library database search but I was wondering if you would be able to direct me to outside outlets in sources. What would you recommend and do you believe this is feasible? I wanted to update the page expanding on historical development, traditions and how j'ouvert is celebrated both in the Caribbean and globally.

Looking forward to hear back form you soon.

Dear Ian, my name is Ashley Tsang, and I am a student in the PJHC class at Rice. I am currently working on an article called "Refugee Health in the United States". I have added sections called "Health Care Barriers". I was wondering if you could spare some time to look to see if I did my references properly or if I should work on improving anything in the sections? I wonder if I should put a reference for every sentence. Thank you so much! Atsang99 (talk) 01:00, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Request for suggestions of improvement

Hi Ian! I am a student in a WikiEd course at Rice University. I'm working on Immigrant health care in the United States and the bulk of my contributions have been on the major section I added, titled "Health care in immigration detention centers," as well as some re-organizational efforts that I've described in my sandbox! I was wondering if you could take a look at my edits when you have the time, and let me know what improvements I can make! As well, I've struggled a little to find appropriate images to illustrate the article with, so I was wondering if you might have any thoughts on that. Thank you for the help! Breastfeeding article student edit

Hi there, could you please look at the new student Davie243 addition to the Breastfeeding article. I really believe that you need to contact the student's instructor to ask what this problem may be. I'd also like to mention that even for an experienced editor with a medical background it would be hard to find room for improvement in that article, let alone expect it of a student. Please get back to me on this. Perhaps the instructor can read the article and suggest something for the student to work on on the talk page and I and other editors could offer assistance. Thanks. Gandydancer (talk) 18:48, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

I note that you have removed the section that discusses skin-to-skin and that is a good thing. It need not be worked on and returned as it is discussed at length in the article already. IMO what is left is enough to give this student credit for helping to build a good article. The instructor should not ask for more IMO because as I said, it is not at all easy with an existing article that is pretty good already. (I have not checked the refs.) What do you think? Gandydancer (talk) 00:23, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
@Gandydancer: I left the student some initial feedback on their talk page. I offered to work with them to see if they can improve their sandbox draft, but as you said, there are likely to be WEIGHT issues. We try to steer student editors away from larger, more well-developed articles like this one, but that doesn't always work. We're doing work to revamp the way we have students draft work in their sandboxes, and I think this might be an additional area where we could try to steer them away from better-developed articles like these. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:37, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
On the specific issue of skin-to-skin, I had no idea that this was also called kangaroo care. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 00:43, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

I agree with Gandydancer that this article is very difficult to improve. Out of the last ten or so student edits that I can recall, approximately ten have been reverted. It's precisely because of this pattern that I added a bunch of breastfeeding-related redlinks to Wikipedia:Requested articles/Medicine. Or if students would prefer to work on existing content, Nipple shield, Supplemental nursing system, and Breastfeeding difficulties are all in dire need of improvement. Clayoquot (talk | contribs) 03:02, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

I made a few improvements. Please take another look at the article and tell me if I need to change anything else on it. Davie243 (talk) 05:59, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

I cannot fault the student because they seem to not understand very much at all about how to work with this article. However I am disappointed in the WP supervisor and this student's instructor for not following through on this, on checking for the student's understanding of the assignment and improvements or lack of, etc. It shows a lack of respect for the hardworking WP volunteers who try to produce good articles. Gandydancer (talk) 22:20, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
@Gandydancer: - I can fault the student, because they went through a series of training modules - the same training modules that 8000 students go through every term. I gave them feedback, as did several other people. They chose to act the way they did, and I'm tempted to block them for disruption. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:58, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
I will get in touch with the instructor and ask them to instruct the student to stop editing. But if they do this again, I will block them. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:00, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks so much. Ian, it is my guess that this student is in training to be a LPN, though I thought that LPN training was no longer available because so few hospitals use them - perhaps they are still used in nursing homes... Anyway, although I ended up with a masters in nursing (and am now retired) I started out as a LPN myself, so of course I'd really like to see this student succeed. And I'd like to see inner city predominantly black colleges succeed as well. But did you look at the graduation rate for that college? What on earth is that all about? Judging by this student's edits either English is not their first language or the English that they use in their every-day speech is practically foreign. It is much more important that this student learn to speak English than learn how to edit Wikipedia. The student's instructor and their guidance counselor (and if they don't have one that is perhaps one reason why their graduation rate is so low) must know that. As it is, if this student fails this class it will just be one more failure to add to the many that they have likely built up in their life so far. We can not expect more from children than they are possibly capable of and then blame them for our failures. Of course, it is certainly also possible that this student was given every chance to succeed and chose not to be responsible in which case they deserve to fail. In my experience the student editing for college credits has not been very successful for us or for the students either. Gandydancer (talk) 16:11, 17 December 2019 (UTC)

@Alyssanapoli: Sorry, this is not an acceptable approach to this assignment. I've replied in more depth on your talk page. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:23, 18 December 2019 (UTC)

Ian (Wiki Ed), this nomination was created on November 16, but it was never transcluded despite a message being left on the nominator's talk page. Every couple of months I check on what hasn't been transcluded, and this one came up on the list, along with a number of others, but those didn't meet the size criteria. This one does.

Since the article was created for an online class for which you're the Wikipedia interface, and the class is over, I was wondering how you'd like to proceed. There's an issue with the hook, which is entirely a quote (but perhaps shouldn't be), but as important, if there are any other issues with the nomination, it's would be very helpful to know that there's someone who can address them so the reviewer's time isn't effectively wasted.

Thank you very much for your time. I've noticed a couple of things this time around: a number of articles from fall classes were moved to mainspace about two weeks before they were nominated, so perhaps the instructions need to more prominently note that any DYK nominations need to be made within seven days. There should also, perhaps, be more emphasis on making sure the nomination is transcluded and/or emphasis on checking their talk page and dealing with helpful messages like the bot posts to nominator's pages when they fail to transclude.

Finally, I've seen a few GA nominations coming from courses, which strikes me as unhelpful if the nominator isn't planning on sticking around. The backlog is such (currently over 500 unreviewed nominations) that the review is almost certain not to begin until long after the scholastic nominator has moved on: the odds are that the article will have some issues, if not significant issues, and the reviewer will spend considerable time only to discover that the nomination has long since been abandoned. Can we avoid having a GAN be part of these? Just curious. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:00, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

Adding Template:Did you know nominations/Post-1500s Philippines, another untranscluded nomination from a course, this time of a new article that's more than long enough. Note that this article has been tagged with the "essay" template, which I suspect will take significant attention to get to the point where the template can be removed—the article would not be eligible for promotion until the issue has been dealt with. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:52, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
Ian, it's been nearly three weeks, and there hasn't been any response here regarding Template:Did you know nominations/Shift-and-persist model. I pointed out an issue with the hook that will need to be addressed: are you (or is someone else in Wiki Ed) prepared to adopt the nomination? If not, I can check to see if there's anyone in the DYK community willing to do so. If the answer is "no" in both places, the only thing to do is to delete the never-completed nomination. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:47, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
@BlueMoonset: I'm really, really sorry. I went from a crazy rush after Christmas, to a week out of town at a conference, to a week trying to catch up on the last three weeks. This completely slipped through the cracks.
As far as DYKs and GANs go, we don't encourage students to do either. If a student creates a DYK nom, we send the instructor an email about it with some extra information about the nomination, but I'm at fault here for not checking to see whether the DYK was actually transcluded. I've been thinking a lot about GANs and what to do with them - I have a list of 15 from my classes this Fall. I'm going to talk to my colleagues about how to proceed with this, but I think I should follow up with the students and instructors and make sure that they plan to follow up.
As for the nomination itself - I have a feeling that I probably don't have the depth of knowledge about the topic that I'd need to handle the topic. I've asked the student if they're still around/still willing to see this through, but unless I hear from them soon, I think it's best to close this. Again, I'm sorry about the delay on my part. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:35, 17 January 2020 (UTC)
