Unlinking dates

Hi, Lightmouse. I notice that you removed the links from years and similar date elements in List of U.S. National Historic Landmarks by state. I appreciate that the use of links on plain-English phrases can seem excessive. But my logic was that, in the case of historic sites, linking the dates could be a quick and easy way to provide the reader with a way to look at the wider historic context for a site. Can you share your thinking on why the links should be removed? Ipoellet 21:25, 6 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi, linking all years and centuries in that article appears to me to conflict with Wikipedia:Manual of Style (links) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers). If a reader really wants to know about a year, all they have to do is type four characters into the search box, that is quite different than the effort to find out about 'Gothic Revival architecture'. It is clear that we have a different view of context. If you think they are important, feel free to revert my edit.

I certainly think the whole 'list of <Protected areas> of the United States> needs reviewing. Some of them have titles like 'list of US <protected>' others are titled '<protected> of the US'. That is why I moved that one. Lightmouse 07:37, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

September WPOR Collaboration of the Week

First off, great job to all WikiProject Oregon folks for last week’s List of Oregon State Parks work. We pounded out six new state park articles: Sarah Helmick, Bald Peak, Bob Straub, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, Tumalo, and Peter Skene Ogden. Plus numerous other edits to improve the existing articles. As a reward, we are introducing the COTW award {{WPOR COTW award}}, and this time it goes to User:Woodstein52 for starting three of the articles.

All righty WPOR ladies and gentleman, great job last week with our state song and gemstone. I have bumped them up to Start class. I haven’t looked at the contributions, so the COTW award will be later. This week’s articles are Darlene Hooley, by special request, and another Top stub, our very own state rock, the Thunderegg. Yes, apparently we have a state rock and state gemstone. No word on whether there is a state stone too. Hooley basically needs some sources to make it to the next level. Fall WPOR COTW

Welcome to autmun and the weekly COTW news. Great job to those who helped out with last week’s articles: Darlene Hooley & Thunderegg. Both made great improvements. This week, something a little different. With fall upon us, the photo ops are going to be harder to get, so we have a photo request fulfillment drive. Take a look at the requested pictures for Oregon category or the graphics subproject for what’s needed. Then go take a picture, or search online for a free picture to upload (US gov sites are great and there are links available from the above links). If you fill a request, be sure to remove the request template from the article’s talk page. Our other item is another red link removal drive, this time on the flagship Oregon article. Week 1 October WP:ORE COTW

I know everyone has been waiting anxiously for this week’s COTW, so here they are: Barlow Road and Columbia River Plateau. Both are almost Start class, just some formatting and referencing, plus a little expansion and they will be there!

As to last week, it is difficult to track the items we were working on, but I know some pictures were added and at least three red links were removed from Oregon, so thank you to all those who participated. The award winner will be GoodDamon for their creation of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute article. We have now worked through all the Top class stubs and are into the High class stubs. WPOR CoTW: Don Schollander & Conde McCullough

Greetings WPOR world. Last week was great with the Barlow Road seeing lots of improvement, maybe even B class. Columbia River Plateau also saw some improvement, maybe enough to bump it to Start. On with the countdown, another two Stubs in the High category, both happen to be people: Don Schollander a multi-gold medalist; and then world-renowned bridge architect and all-around swell guy Conde McCullough. Schollander needs sources more than anything, and McCullough needs more of a bio, plus maybe a nice chart for the bridges with type/year/location/length. California NHLs, and PD request

Hi. Great job in reorganizing the List of National Historic Landmarks in California! I think your pioneering use of the numbered list format for NHLs works well, and the reorganization just makes the whole article a lot more manageable for the reader. I like the black styling.

One thing though, I don't like the verbatim use of the NHL summary material to describe Harada House and a few other sites. Per discussion on "Fair Use of PD material vs. Plagiarism in WP:NRHP articles" on the wp:nrhp talk page, I personally would really rather head off use of verbatim text from NHL summaries, as I think it undermines the quality of what we are accomplishing together with all this work. I don't want each page to have to show a label that it includes public domain text from the National Park Service, like the ship articles have to do with respect to DANFS. I expect that once a page is tainted with such a label, it becomes difficult to ever eliminate it all and especially difficult to document that it is no longer tainted. Would you mind deleting them from the California page, or would you mind if I did so, so that the page can be a new model? Those passages are too long now, anyhow, and the passages will be accessible from the articles themselves that each will have a link to its NHL summary. I am in complete agreement with your concerns about verbatim copying of PD material. At very least it needs to be properly attributed, and far better to rewrite the information in original text.

In the case of what you observe in List of National Historic Landmarks in California, I have copied the NPS text verbatim as a temporary placeholder until I can wikify, paraphrase, reorganize, and condense (yes, they are too long!) the description, while still using the NPS description as the primary source. Eventually, they will be cleaned up. (The entry at Santa Cruz Looff Carousel and Roller Coaster is one such that I have rewritten from the NPS text.) In the meantime, I have attributed them - the reference mark is in the column header, as for most of the other columns.

But I recognize and respect your discomfort. I'm preoccupied with non-wiki business this evening, but I commit in the next day or so to either rewrite or remove each of those particular descriptions.

Thanks for your prompt and substantive reply here, and for alerting me to it. Whew, great, i am relieved we are on the same track about this. Glad to understand your intentions/process more fully now. A further small point: such paste-ins of material from elsewhere could be enclosed by quotation marks, when you put them in, clarifying to others that they are indeed quotes, and probably suggesting an intent to replace them, and keeping it squeaky clean as we go along. But the main thing is your intent, which I know you can implement from your other work, for California and for other open state lists of NHLs. I myself have been calling "finished" state list pages that are really incomplete in their descriptions (like descriptions of multiple sites as "A house", in the List of National Historic Landmarks in Illinois article), while I have focused on getting an article with NHL summary source and perhaps more sources for every site. Just minor variation in our style of getting to the same place. You told me once to "Be Bold" though, so I thought i should bring it up. :) doncram 02:29, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

FYI the List of National Historic Landmarks in California list is almost completely populated with at least stub articles now, as you may have noticed. Recently in new articles I have been adding HABS photo links where available, and/or putting photo requests in the corresponding talk pages. There are about 10 yet to create, which I may or may not get started during this week, before going on a trip and taking a vacation from wikipedia for a while. I got your reply. I wholeheartedly approve of effort for, and hope for success of, FL review for some smaller state lists of NHLs, before the big ones like CA and NY which are just too unwieldy. FWIW, I visited your 16-NHL-List of National Historic Landmarks in Oregon and added NHL summary, NRHP text and photo references, and HABS link for the first NHL on its list, the Bonneville Dam. I'll help out more, when time allows. All my secrets, such as they are, are embodied in User:Doncram/Recipe, User:Doncram/NHLtemplate, and User:Doncram/NHLinfo, in case those are ever useful. Hi. I reverted your change to the war declaraton photo caption. FDR was, in fact, signing the German war declaration in that photo. He is seen wearing a gray suit. Holiday COTW

New Year COTW from WP:ORE

Happy New Year to all the Oregon WikiProject People. A big round of applause for everyone last year, we got a lot done. A thank you to everyone who helped with the last Collaboration of the Week, I saw a large number of articles in the unassessed section and our total number of articles is over 5000 (we were around 4000 in June when the assessment program finished the initial run) so I know at one person was busy tagging. This week we are back to a High importance Stub article the one and only max security prison, first prison, and only one with a death row in the state, the Oregon State Penitentiary. Alaska NHLs

Hi Ipoellet -- I have finished creating stub articles for all the NHLs listed in List of National Historic Landmarks in Alaska, unless I missed one or two where there is a blue-link pointing to something other than an article. In the process I should have effectively moved each site's link to an NHL webpage, which you had put in the description column, into the site's article. I've added in NRHP text and photos links, and HABS photo and description links, where available. I may have changed a couple article names from those you set up, but for the most part the way you had it set up worked very well. Some of the sites seem really interesting, like Leffingwell's Camp Site, when I see the NRHP texts for them. They all seem exotic and far away.

I wonder, would you care to browse the articles and material, and see what you'd care to add now? It would be nice to get a presentable article out of it, with new short descriptions for the sites, and so on. Cheers, doncram (talk) 00:02, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Oregon GA COTW

Howdy to WikiProject Oregon members, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week. As you may have already noticed, our flagship article Oregon is up for the third time as we make a push to get WP:GA status before going for WP:FA. Since this will take some time to get where it needs to be, this will be the COTW for more than just a week. On another note, just a general good job/pat on the back to the project for a great 2007, the first full year of the project. We had 83 DYKs about Oregon, improved one article to FA, and went from around 4 GAs to 17 GAs. Plus numerous new articles, improvements to existing, the introduction of the COTW, and the introduction of article assessment at the project. Again, great job and here’s to a new year. Wake up! Wake up to a happy day! Says Tom Peterson. Greetings to the gang at WP:ORE, its time for another round of Collaboration of the Week. Last week was a very successful endeavor with great improvement to Oregon Swallowtail and Deuce Biglow Canyon Wind Farm. OK, so there’s no “e” but it makes me laugh. The Biglow production was so successful we got our first DYK out of it. So, let’s try for a second with the tallest building in the state, the Wells Fargo Center. Clown COTW

Greetings once again to members of the best encyclopedia online about Oregon (aka WP:ORE)! Last week we improved Neil Goldschmidt to close to GA level, and moved the Wells Fargo Center from Stub to Start for the Collaboration of the Week. This week we’re clowning around with some bozo from Oregon, Pinto Colvig, and then in an attempt to garner another DYK, the rather stubby Cooper Spur. As we have quite a few new members over the last six months, I’ll make another pitch for our various subprojects. Listed here, you will find a variety of groups focused on specific areas of Oregon from transportation to culture. hey there Ipoellet, thanks for writing. I'm sorry you took offense to my somewhat flippant edit summary. Your explanation of your motivations behind the wording and linking is pretty refreshing. I still think that the way it is worded now is a bit less ambiguous, and doesn't require someone to read a separate article to get the implications of the wording. However, I definitely didn't mean the summary as a personal attack. I'm convinced that it's impossible for those of us (I don't know where you were raised, so don't want to lump you into this collective "us") raised in the "West" to be completely free of the trappings of racism that come along with our culture and education system, so usually just fix some problem instead of sweating an editor about it. I hope you'll take this as an olive branch, I don't want to offend editors who are obviously doing good work with obviously good intentions. Please let me know if you have other concerns. By the way, I'm going to be working on expanding that list, filling out the descriptions for all the sites, and I'm getting close to being done with the Marmes Rockshelter article. Heh, I went to Junior High, High School, and a bit of college in southern Illinois, where I guarantee it was worse only in the lack of subtlety. Alas, I'd love to see the Oregon (and the rest of them for that matter) list get elevated, it seems like there's a lot of good editors working in Oregon. Old Buildings and Pictures

Greetings from WP:WikiProject Oregon. Blah blah blah. This week we have our semi-annual Picture Drive and a article creation drive for the NRHP List. For the picture drive, go take a picture, or find a free use one (lots of links to gov sites above) and upload it Wikipedia. For the National Register of Historic Places, find a red link on the main Oregon list or one of the county lists at start a new article. March 14 OR COTW

Hello again or welcome if you are new to WP:WikiProject Oregon! Last week we did a picture drive and a NRHP creation drive. It’s hard to track the picture results, but I know I saw quite a few pictures added, so great job. With NRHP we added 7 that I saw: Mitchell Recreation Area, Salem First United Methodist Church, Portland City Hall, Crater Lake Lodge, Central Library (Portland, Oregon), Watchman Lookout Station, and Alvin T. Smith House; with most now nominated for DYK’s! So great work everybody.

This week, its back to stubs with one of the largest newspapers in the state, The Register-Guard, and a request with Oregon Coast. Feel free to help with either one, and the paper article is so short a DYK should be pretty easy to get (just need 5X expansion). Vera Katz and History

Howdy folks, its time for another installment of WikiProject Oregon’s Collaboration of the Week! Last week we made some improvements to the Oregon Coast and brought The Register-Guard up to B class while garnering a DYK! Great job to those who lent a hand. This week we finish up the High priority Stubs with former mayor and Speaker of the House, Vera Katz, which is pretty much a Start class now and could easily get to B class. The Dalles Airport

Good day, Just a heads up the reason why The Dalles Airport is on the Oregon list of airports is the list is based off of the FAA Airport Data (Form 5010). When you filter their database the airport comes up as an Oregon airport. My guess is that this is due in two parts: 1 the airport is owned in part by an Oregon Municipality (City of The Dalles), 2 the city served is The Dalles. Again, this is only my guess. Either way it would probably be best to have the airport listed under both Washington & Oregon lists. --Trashbag (talk) 13:24, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
