July 2008[edit]

Please do not add copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder, as you did to Lady GaGa. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. I apologize, I'm a little new to this and was attempting to find an appropriate biography for her. In the future I'll avoid doing this. Thank You. Ivan ballet izzle (talk) 21:42, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for understanding. This is the kind of legal matter that can cause serious issues for an open source reference work like ours. The problem here is not that the biography is inappropriate; it's just that for legal reasons we can't duplicate the text from the original. You can certainly use the AMG profile as one of the bases of the article if it doesn't borrow language from or follow too closely on the original. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:49, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely =)
I wouldn't want to cause any legal problems for wikipedia. I believe I will do what you have suggested and extract the biographical information from her AMG profile, but rephrase it so that there are no copyright issues. Should I list AMG in the bibliography? Thank you, again.Ivan ballet izzle (talk) 21:58, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, list it as a source. :) With AMG, there's a special way to do so. If you put <ref>{{allmusic|id=11:hcfixzr5ldse~T1|label=Lady Gaga}}</ref>, it will turn into this--Lady Gaga at AllMusic--in the reference list. Very handy! I work on a lot of jazz music articles, and it saves me a lot of time. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:07, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Thanks! Thats useful =) I'm going to go take care of that right now.Ivan ballet izzle (talk) 22:09, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I moved it up next to the text. It automatically lists itself under references. And, by the way, I explained what I did in the "edit summary". Since you're new, you might not be familiar with those yet. It's the box below the edit box right above the "save page" button. You put a brief description of what you're doing so that other editors can more easily collaborate with you. Also, you may not yet know that you can create "watchlists". This is how I knew that you had answered me here. When there's a page you want to keep an eye on (in this case, I kept an eye here in case you had any questions), you can click the "watch" tab, and it will help you keep up with most recent changes to it. While I'm here, I'm going to just drop you a "welcome" message at the top of this page. It has all kinds of links you might find useful. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 22:30, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again, I'll check those out and I'll make sure to fill in the 'edit summary' section =)Ivan ballet izzle (talk) 23:01, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is so cool to read.. the inception of the first biographical information online about Gaga. Feels like history reading this. 4theloveofallthings (talk) 22:20, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
