DEFAULTSORT, Category, and characters with accents[edit]

Hello. There's a non-obvious quirk of sorting on the english Wikipedia; sort keys with accented characters such as "é", í", or "á" always sort after "z", not in with their unaccented counterparts as many people expect.

In other words, the article Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, with the natural-seeming DEFAULTSORT of "Ní Chuilleanáin, Eiléan", will appear in the "Living People" category list after Olivier Nzuzi, instead of between Carál Ní Chuilín and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill where it belongs.

To get the sorting that is expected, one needs to convert accented characters to their unaccented counterparts, such as "Ni Chuilleanain, Eilean". You can think of this as a bug, but there's actually some long, boring reasons why things are this way. Studerby 08:07, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
