Adding ITIS serial numbers.

Hello JoJan,

I have been rather proactive on gastropod articles lately (mainly Pyramidellidae and Eulimidae), as you probably know already. I just wanted to suggest something. Normally when I modify Pyramidellidae articles, there is a TaxonIDs box located directly below the Taxobox containing the scientific classification and binomial name for the species, I was just wondering, is it acceptable if I add the serial numbers from the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS)? Usually when I edit these articles I sight this in the 'External links' section...

The example above is from Chrysallida pyttelilla.

I know that itis, ncbi, and eol are empty but I was just thinking about adding serial numbers to the itis external identifiers, just like for WoRMS. I just wanted to know from you if its okay to go ahead and insert these numbers before I proceed with doing this myself. Thanks, and have a spectacular year while in 2013! Of course, it is allowed to add TaxonIDs, insofar these databases have an article about the species. While you're working on the Pyramidellidae, I advise you to download Dall's book "A Monograph of West American Pyramidellid Mollusks"] and G.W. Tryon's book Manual of Conchology vol. X. There is no copyright on these books and you can use the text and images freely. Mind you however, many species are mentioned under a name that has become a synonym. You have to search the .pdf file by the epithet (under the masculine or feminine form) and see which one matches. The tedious descriptions have to be rephrased into a more readable text. Once you've mastered the knack (and that's not so difficult), everything will go smoothly. And I also wish you a happy New Year and pleasant contributions to wikipedia. Thank you, these books most certainly demonstrate a knowledgeable insight into the families of gastropods. I stumbled across a paragraph in G.W. Tryon's Manual of Conchology about the small slug-like sea snail, Lamellaria, giving a rather detailed physical description of the observed specimen, this is without a doubt, a very useful source. Synonymised taxa

I only make them a redirect if they already have an article and had to be moved to the accepted name. Making redirects for all synonyms in gastropoda is next to impossible, as there are probably close to 500,000 synonyms. JoJan (talk) 15:36, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

Tim Keck

Hi JoJan,

I'm working on a research project about The Onion. I'm interested in finding biographical information on Tim Keck, one of the co-founders of The Onion and the founder of "The Stranger" Newspaper. His Wikipedia page has been deleted twice, most recently by yourself (in October 2005!). Could you tell me more about why you deleted his page? Who created it? Was the information incorrect? The deletion log reads:

(content was: '{{nn-bio}}Tim Keck was born in a commune in Israel in 1959. His father was the Jewish national welterweight champion 1949 and his mother worked for...')

And I must admit I'm intrigued by such a claim.

The original article was created by an IP on 15 September 2005 and contained originally the following text "Tim Keck was born in a commune in Israel in 1959. His father was the Jewish national welterweight champion 1949 and his mother worked for Hebrew Meats." A few minutes later, the same IP changed the content in an attack page with vile words that I won't reproduce. This was then deleted by an other administrator on 16 October 2005. On 22 October 2005 an IP (not the same IP) recreated the article with the following text : "Tim Keck was born in a commune in Israel in 1959. His father was the Jewish national welterweight champion 1949 and his mother worked for Hebrew Meats." There were no references and as such wasn't in accordance with the rules of WP:BIO. It was noted as "non-notable" by an other user. I concurred and deleted the stub.

Does this mean that this person doesn't deserve an article in wikipedia ? No, it means only that the article lacked the minimal standards required by wikipedia. If you wish, you can recreate the article. The basic criteria are: this person has been the subject of multiple published secondary sources which are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. Once you have written an article with a certain depth of coverage, it then depends if it will pass the "New Pages" control.

If it does, the article will most probably remain in wikipedia. I hope this answer helps. JoJan (talk) 14:26, 24 February 2013 (UTC)

Newbie struggling with Commons upload

Thanks JoJan for your note on User:MichaelDOwen's talk page. He replied with a link to his uploaded image but it is a pdf and it is displaying in a full-page format that I am not familiar with:

Thanks Anna, but no. The file was in the commons under File:Press Release Metropolis Video Rock from CBGB.pdf. And it has already been deleted by an admin in the commons. And btw, I could read this file on my computer without any problem.

pdf-files don't belong in the commons. It should have been uploaded to en.wikipedia. JoJan (talk) 14:40, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Help with edit history?

Hello JoJan, I prepared a stub on John McCurry on a subpage of my user page. When I moved it into article space, the whole edit history of my subpage went along with it, but in reality only the edits from March 19th 2013 onward are part of the preparation of that article. Can you somehow maybe delete the parts that are not relevant?

As I haven't done this before, I applied the instructions on Wikipedia:Revision deletion. Somehow, my first attempt already failed and I couldn't understand why. As this is a tricky operation that, if improperly applied, could lead to desysopping, I advise you to ask this to someone more experienced in this matter, listed in Category:Wikipedia administrators willing to handle RevisionDelete requests. A couple of questions

Hello JoJan, thanks so much for all of your excellent work. I wanted to point out that the recent genus articles you created did not automatically show italic title, so I added it. I hope it is OK to do it that way. I am not sure why the title comes out in italics automatically when using the "Species box" format, but not when using the "Automatic taxobox" format. Another odd thing is that in the articles Lophocochlias, Parisanda, and Partubiola, as well as in the subsequent species articles listed here, within the automatic taxobox format, the word "Genus" is not being displayed, and the italic rendering of the genus name is also not working. Thanks for pointing this out, I hadn't noticed. I've changed the templates by adding the word "genus". It should be OK now. The family Skeneidae is a tough nut to crack. There are only a few studies available and these are sometimes contradictory. As Philip Carpenter noted in 1864 in his article "On the present state of malacological nomenclature" ([1] "At present to teach the science (of taxonomy of the Mollusca) is almost hopeless. To labour in it is fraught to each worker with the unnecessary sacrifice of most valuable time". Concerning Skeneidae, not much has changed apparently. JoJan (talk) 15:50, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

Yes you are right! Unfortunately not nearly enough work has been done on most micromollusk families. A malacologist friend of mine has a bumper sticker that says, "So many species, so little time", and I say, "Too many mollusks, not enough malacologists"! The two articles Phaeohyphomycosis; Wildlife Disease & Phaeohyphomycosis

Hello JoJan, I saw you did some work on that new article today, so I went in after you and did a bunch more work -- the students have not touched it for 6 days, so I am thinking maybe their project is over? I also merged the content from the older stub into the new longer article. I wanted to ask you: I have not yet deleted the shorted older stub because I was not sure about turning Phaeohyphomycosis into a redirect, when probably the newer article should have that name, which is probably a lot better than Phaeohyphomycosis; Wildlife Disease. I was not sure if I can redirect the old one and then move the new article to the same name as the old article -- would that create problems or not? The best solution is to delete Phaeohyphomycosis as a G6 (technical deletions) and then move Phaeohyphomycosis; Wildlife Disease to Phaeohyphomycosis. And then undelete the original over the top of the one just moved, if one wants to retain the history of the original article Phaeohyphomycosis. However, the new article contains all the content of the original article and the same references. Then I wonder if retaining the history of the original article is really necessary. I looked and the old stub article does have a surprising amount of edit history, although whether we should work to preserve it, I don't know.
