Lon Chaney[edit]

Hi Joejjc. Thanks for your note on Lon Chaney's (NOT Sr in real life but here at wikip) talk page. Wikipedia, because it is striving to be an encyclopedia and not another internet chat room, blog etc etc, has a policy that all edits must have a source. As you spend more time here you will find that there are several ways to accomplish this. First (and this is a good habit to get into for several reasons) you can cite your source on the edit summary line that is just below the feild where you make your edits. Click on the History tab for almost any article and you will get a page showing the people who have made changes to the article. Now most will not have filled the edit summary but those that have will give you some idea of why they did what they did. See this [1] to see the edit summaries that I used when I took your info out and put it back in. Using this space always helps other editors and administrators decide whether your edits can be trusted to be reliable.

This was usually all you needed to do when I started here. But, due to legal problems with bad edits on political figures pages Wikipedia has also started asking for a form of footnote and/or reference section to be filled out. See this page [2] as an example of one that has done both towards the bottom of the article.

A third, though not used as often and not a prefered method, a source can be placed on the discussion page as you have done in this case.

Now, you will eventually get a hello here at your talk page from an administrator who will give you all sorts of good info about editing here but until they get to you here are three things that I was given when I started that may be of help (they will probably give you these suggestions and much more)

I will admit that I get into some of the policy pages and my eyes start to glaze over so always be aware that there are help pages and the village pump where you can go to ask questions. Wikipedia is also an evolving entity and the guidelines you have used can alter, but most (though not all) wikimembers will be happy to help you along the way. I'll just close by wishing you Happy Editing. MarnetteD | Talk 18:26, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
