Welcome![edit]

Hello, Jpark044, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

Please remember to sign your messages on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! • Sorry, but I had to revert your edits. That image was way too big, and those links were unacceptable per our relevant guideline, WP:EL. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 00:35, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • And I am going to revert you again, since this is just promotional. If you continue to make edits like this you will end up blocked. Drmies (talk) 01:48, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • And there we have it. You copied text from his own website and pasted it into the Wikipedia article. That's a copyright violation, at least while there is no explicit permission given for such copying and pasting. Now, in your edit summary you claim authorization by the tour manager, and Wikipedia doesn't work that way, of course: you are using Wikipedia to promote Phil X, and that is another reason, besides the copyvio, why I blocked you temporarily, to prevent you from disrupting the article further. Drmies (talk) 02:11, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am a new Wikipedia user - can you help me? Phil X is a very under-rated musician but he has made a significant contribution to the LA recording scene. I am using Steve Vai's Wikipedia page as a model - can you tell me why Steve Vai is allowed to have sections on his career, gear and discography, while Phil is not? Phil has worked with Tommy Lee, Rob Zombie, Avril Leveign etc. I think that's a pretty noteworthy career. If you could give me a little help I would greatly appreciate it. Phil is currently on tour and his manager asked me to update his wikipedia page is it is really bad and gives no detailed information. I thank you in advance for your time and assistance. :)
  • First of all, you can't copy and paste from other websites (unless it's uncopyrighted content, a rarity). Second, you can't stick in a million external links. Third, all content in such articles needs proper verification from reliable sources, and has to be written in a neutral tone. And that's the problem with Phil X: there are no reliable sources that verify those claims to greatness. Being a fantastic guitar player in his own right is not a guarantee for notability by our guidelines (like WP:GNG). Follow the directions in the template and place an unblock request; another administrator will come by and decide if you could be unblocked. I had already placed a notice on the relevant noticeboard, at Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons/Noticeboard#Phil_X, before that unwise edit of yours. • Thank you for clarifying. Friend, I am a brand new user to wikipedia and I apologize for any offence I may have caused by my lack of knowledge on Wikipedia etiquette. I have invested well over 8 hours of my life in researching & writing this article, and as I merely added to the existing article while leaving the original text intact, i am not trying to sabotage the existing article. I did not even know a human being was reviewing my edits and I did not see your messages to me until you blocked me & I figured out how to view the Talk page. Please do not take offense, when I saw my changes weren't being saved I thought there was something wrong with my internet connection so I reposted them.
  • For the record, the extended bio I pasted was written from scratch yesterday for the sole purpose of updating wikipedia, and does not already exist online. It is not a copy-paste job, I promise you. I checked with Copyscape and it is all original content. Nevertheless, I will reword it now in case Google logged it for the few minutes it was live. I saw Steve Vai had a long list of external links and I thought that I had to give as many outside links as possible to prove that this was a real person. Now I know differently. I am not trying to promote Phil or make him any money, I am merely trying to give him a good, solid page that accurately records his achievements and adds value to Wikipedia. If you (or another Admin) would consider unblocking me, I will write a good, solid ORIGINAL article with a wealth of solid external citations & relevant internal links. I will put it in Sandbox first if you would like to review it. Thank you for your help so far, I much appreciate it & hope we can work together on this. :)

Request reason:

I am a brand new user and was unaware I was not allowed to add promotional links to wikipedia. An admin has now informed me of this and I will not make the same mistake again. I have spent 8 hours writing and researching this article and I now have a revised version ready to post with original pictures and strong internal and external links and citations. Please review the situation as I would very much link to update my friend's page and add to the knowledge available on Canadian guitarists. Thank you. Jpark044 (talk) 03:47, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

Given the fairly obvious block evasion (see User:99.60.182.21 and these edits, which are fairly similar to yours), I am declining this unblock request and extending the block on this account. Any future unblock request should explain this block evasion. --Kinu t/c 08:05, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 1 week for block evasion (see User:99.60.182.21). Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions. If you think there are good reasons why you should be unblocked, you may appeal this block by adding below this notice the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.  Kinu t/c 08:22, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Present block, future participation[edit]

If by "article" you mean that TV article--reasons were given for its not being accepted into the mainspace. I didn't look at those reasons carefully, but I did glance at the article and it appeared a bit too promotional in tone and content to me. Your edits to Phil X, which you tried to reinsert under your IP address (seriously, like we wouldn't notice), were simply not acceptable for reasons already mentioned to you a couple of times. Now, it may have taken you some time to do it in the first place, but not so much the second and third and fourth time around, when you evaded your block to only see it lengthened.

You may have noted that I worked on the article a bit, just now, adding references: that's what articles need. References to reliable sources. Wikipedia is not for posting announcements and "updating" schedules, no matter who asks you to do so--if Phil X wrote us a letter with his upcoming tour dates, we still wouldn't include it because that's not what an encyclopedia does. Wikipedia is for things that may stand the test of time, that is, things that have been written about in reliable sources, and you probably need to read the relevant page, at WP:RS. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 18:05, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • One more thing (and I say this not as an admin, but as a guitar fan), I don't think Phil X is "underrated", as you said elsewhere. People who know him know he's good. He's just not that well-known, and that means, to put it simply, that he's not written about to the extent that others are. Drmies (talk) 18:07, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

REPLY TO: Present block, future participation[edit]

  • Thank you for your prompt reply, it means a lot to me that you took the time to write back. The problem I am trying to fix is simply this: this guy has a lot of achievements and has worked with some notable public figures, all of whom have their own pages on Wikipedia. Would I be allowed to state these work credits for the record, if I provided a valid citation for each? The article also has an admin request for a picture on it: I have gone to considerable trouble to obtain brand new and unpublished pictures and got permission from the original photographers, and yet these were deleted too, which I don't understand as I did this 'by the book'. It's funny to me because I am an author with 10 books published and have my own page created for me by my editor HERE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natasha_Rhodes. As you can see, it is full of detail and has some nice pics, yet I am a nobody. Phil has 30 years of experience working in the music biz and has really achieved a lot in his life, and yet his page contains only a fragment of his credits, and is 5 years old. If I started from scratch and wrote a BRIEF, concise and impartial article that was neutral in tone, would I be allowed to publish it? (pending your approval, of course). Let me know and thank you again so much for your time. Boy am I learning a lot in a short time here! :)
  • PS - could you explain what you mean by this: "Your edits to Phil X, which you tried to reinsert under your IP address (seriously, like we wouldn't notice)." My account was *unblocked* last night. I was able to edit and save, which I assumed meant I was unblocked. What does reinsert under your IP address mean? I don't have an IP address, just this account. I am not very tech-savvy, so it woudl help em if you could explain this for future referance. Thanks so much! :)
    • Last point first: see User talk:99.60.182.21. You were never unblocked: you edited as an IP editor. I kind of wish you hadn't pointed me to that article--it also has serious problems. I don't want to call anybody a nobody, but the article has too much unencyclopedic material, not enough references, and too many links; this is frequently what happens in cases where the publisher gets involved. The photos, I didn't handle that: for File:Phil X Guitar Spin.jpg it is imperative that you get that permission taken care of, and for the other, Phil_Xenidis.jpg, you should take that up with the deleting administrator on Commons, who said it was a copyright violation (apparently it said "© 2013 Yamaha Corporation of America"). You can list work credits, yes--best to do so in a separate section, without offering too much detail lest the article look like a resume. Note also that other article have other, more things--but they should have more references as well. If these things make sense to you, file a new unblock request--but the IP edits have to be addressed/explained as well. Drmies (talk) 18:48, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you again for taking the time to explain - I am learning fast! :) There should be zero copyright issues with the 2 pics, I have emails from both photographers (Phil is a Yamaha sponsored guitarist with his own name-brand line in both guitars and amps) giving me permission to upload to Wikipedia. I will look into this tonight and make any relevant fixes. I will file a new unblock request and try to craft a better article tonight in response to your clarifications. Thank you for that. You still have not explained what an IP edit/ IP editor is. I only have one account, and I used that account to repost my fixed article, which I thought was now issue-free. I assumed my account was unblocked because the article posted. What am I missing here? I am trying my best to learn. If you could explain where I went wrong I would much appreciate it so I can make sure I don't make the same mistake twice. I really want to help! :)

Question for Drmies[edit]

  • This is the information which is most important for me to add: http://www.philx.tv/discography.html. If I was able to supply a solid citation from a reputable source for each and every album credit, would I be allowed to list the albums this guitarist has played guitars on? There is a 3-decade career here which people may be interested in reading about. Phil has also invented a new design of whammy bar, a custom name-brand amp which is retailed in US stores, a new guitar pedal, and has his own signature line of guitars released through Yamaha. I would like to document this also. :)

Unblock Request: Newbie User Blocked for 1 week[edit]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Jpark044 (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I am a new user and I did not understand the rules before I started updating this article. I made a number or 'noob' mistakes and did not see the messages from Admin informing me of my errors until I was blocked. At that point I finally read my messages and discovered my etiquette errors. In an attempt to rectify the situation I made the fixes the Admin requested and reposted the article in good faith that this would make up for my original errors. It went live and I assumed that this time I had done everything right. However, this resulted in the admin extending the 36 hour block to a week, and deleting my article the next day. I am told I "reinserted under an IP address" but I do not know what this terminology means or why it is bad. If someone could explain this to me, that would be appreciated so I can avoid doing this in future. I do not understand how I was able to post and save my edits if I was blocked. I only have one user account (registered to my email address) and no IP address. I now have a solid understanding of what I can and can't do and I would like to graciously request that I am allowed to finish editing this article. I have at this point put almost 20 hours of work into researching & writing this article and gathering pictures and citations to support every fact I present. I have re-written the article three times and my finished version is a) written in a neutral tone of voice, b) contains no promotional angle and simply presents supportable facts that internally link to other artists represented on Wikipedia, and c), is 100% original and written personally from scratch by me, and is not derivative of any existing article on the internet. I humbly request that Admin review my case and allow me to put into practice the Wikipedia rules I have learned in the last 24 hours. This is my first article. :) Jpark044 (talk) 17:41, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Accept reason:

I have unblocked you, but please be careful in the future. If you are not sure on something, just ask any of us and we'd be glad to help. King of ♠ 20:06, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you so much! I am going to start tonight by adding a picture (which I have a letter of permission to use) and go from there. I'm excited to get started. Is there any way I can send my intended updates to this page to an admin for review before they go live? I am going to do everything in my power to make this a perfect Wikipedia page & follow all the rules. I just don't want to get blocked again if I miss something. Jpark044 (talk) 22:25, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Jpark044[reply]
  • When you go into wikipedia you see, at the top right-hand side of the page, an invitation to login, which you must in the past have done. If you fail to login, but merely start editing san article, talk-page, userpage or whatever, the edits show as being made by your IP. Everyone has an IP, which is allocated by your internet service provider (ISP). If you edit while logged in the IP is hidden; if you edit while logged out, the IP address is available. You clearly have forgotten to login at some point, hence the IP edits, which I assume you recognise as being edits that you made. Editing with an account increases your personal security, as your IP address is then only available to a few admins with special responsibilities. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 14:25, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • AH!! I understand now. Thank you Anthony.bradbury for explaining. :) I had to restart my computer while I was editing so perhaps that logged me out. Sorry for the mix up! I get it now. Is that why they blocked my account? This is my first time working on wikipedia and I actually spent three hours reading all the rules before I started editing to learn HTML etc. I tried my best and it was very discouraging to get blocked after making my first mistake. You don't shoot your kid in the head when it falls down after taking it's first steps, so why do it to newbies on Wikipedia? I really want to help improve this article but I can't do that if people block me and THEN explain what I did wrong, and THEN cut off my ability to put into practice what I have learned. This back-and-forthing has cost us all a lot of time and nothing has been achieved. Can someone advise me on what my next steps should be to help fix up this article? Jpark044

Phil X and Fretted Americana[edit]

I'm glad that somebody agrees with me. I don't get why Drmies thinks that Phil X's association with Fretted Americana is not notable. I know that he's a highly sought-after session guitarist, but F.A. is probably how a lot of people discover him nowadays. That's where I discovered him. He's a really good guitar player and I really like his sense of humor.

We need to convince Drmies that the Fretted Americana association is notable enough to be included on his article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CJAllbee (talkcontribs) 22:45, 13 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am going to loop in David Brass & Dustin Jack, the creators of Fretted Americana. I think this web series needs a wikipedia article all of its own, with the viewership figures they pull. Whether or not Phil X is 'famous' or 'noteworthy' enough to be allowed to have a decent length article on wikipedia is one question. The other question is: does Fretted Americana deal with information which adds to, or is of interest to readers of Wikipedia's sections on notable guitars & brands, both played by and created by musicians such as Hendrix, EvH, Bob Marley etc? Phil has demoed guitars belonging to a wide range of noteworthy musicians. This might warrent an expended 'Noteworthy Instruments' section on both pages. :) Jpark044 (talk) 22:54, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
