Free Trade[edit]

I found this interesting, technically correct, although not referenced and in parts a little to POV in orientation:

Protectionism is the economic system invented and implemented by the American founding fathers to create a protected free market economy within the borders of the United States to achieve the political goal of an independent nation which protected the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The economic portion of protectionism is to protect the domestic economic system and fragile wage and price structure from unfair foreign competition through tariffs, quotas, and/or regulations. The Tariff Act of 1789, signed into law by President Washington on July 4 1789, was called the "second declaration of independence" by newspapers because it was designed to be the economic means to achieve the political goals of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

I would suggest you reference the above material and instead of replacing what was already there - add it to the article. It might be best for the protectionism article however. Protectionism was not invented by the Founding Fathers - it existed prior to our Republic - in the British Empire (especially under Walpole and Elizabeth I) and in France under Colbert. Hamilton rooted his beliefs in these individuals at the same time Smith published the Wealth of Nations. America, you are right, did not embrace Smith but Hamilton (although there was debate). I would take out the 'protectionism was invented by America' because it was not. The rest is correct but needs references to back it up. --Northmeister 23:12, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
