Re: Steelhead not a rainbow trout subspecies

Your recent edits to the Rainbow trout article asserting that steelhead are not a subspecies of O mykiss are unsupportable with reliable sources. As the Rainbow trout article is a WP Featured Article, it has undergone a lot of scrutiny. Please discuss such changes and assertions on the article talk page before making unsupportable edits in the future. --Mike Cline (talk) 00:52, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

My response to this is on the talk page for O. mykiss where it belongs. Summary of my response: I provided in-line citations in my edit supporting that steelhead are not considered a subspecies of O. mykiss, its a life history of the same species. Klolo9 (talk) 01:25, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

A bit of advice

@Klolo9 – The discussion on steelhead on the rainbow trout article talk page is not unusual and the energy you have put into it demonstrates you are sincerely interested. From your contribution history, it is evident that your experience level within the WP community is limited. Your contributions to the encyclopedia are valued and I would encourage you to continue to contribute, but would like to pass on one piece of advice. Injecting emotions into any discussion, unless it is exuberant praise of another editor’s work, is almost always unproductive and rarely if ever helps resolve the issues under discussion. The steelhead discussion is very benign by WP standards. Many discussions on content can be very contentious, involving numerous editors with untold different agendas. Objective discussion is the only productive way to move the ball forward. Asking and answering questions unemotionally is the best way to participate productively in any discussion. You will be amazed at the number of allies you will develop in the community that way.

You alluded to writing a peer reviewed paper from the sources you list in the steelhead discussion. There has always been the idea that an article solely devoted to steelhead is viable given the complexity of the rainbow trout species and its recreational and commercial exploitation as well as conservation status. It would make a good addition to the collection of articles now devoted to rainbow trout. I might suggest that you craft such an article in your user space. I will be more than happy to help you get it ready for the article space. Let me know, as I have access to just about any source on ever published on salmonids through the Trout and Salmonids Research Collection at Montana State University. --Mike Cline (talk) 13:00, 8 July 2014 (UTC)
