Hi again, I have not come back to your nomination because I feel the article needs more work. You do not need all those uncontroversial cites in the lead as long as that information is cited in the body of the article. The section "The Woman Who Toils: Being the Experiences of Two Ladies as Factory Girls" should be retitled something like "Undercover work" and it should be pared down. Those first two indented quotes are really unnecessary. For the publications section, if you have all these Google Books cites, why not format them as {{cite book|url= |title= |publisher= |year }} instead of putting citations at the end of each line? Hi again. I fixed the URLs, formatted the refs, and started editing. But I found close paraphrasing in one of the sources. All the other sources will now have to be checked. 2D Image enquiry

Sorry for belated reply. The simple answer is thats its complex and the more accurate answer is that its a mess. <rant>99.9999% of all the images on the internet are owned by someone (who is more than willing to let you use them, but you need to get proof that they feel that way (tricky)). Yes the pic of the WW2 soldiers facing away from the camera and looking entirely uninteresting belongs to the the heirs of the person who took it - but can you find her heirs?. The law doesn't get fixed because there are lots of people making money from this. Getty images will sell you a pic of the Mona Lisa and many risk averse companies are willing to pay money for images that its obvious are not owned by the seller. (Museums/glaaeries don't help as they like to get money selling postcards of old paintings to visitors rather than their true purpose which is to share the common wealth that has been given/deposited with them.</rant>

Meanwhile ... my top tips for getting round this. Any wiki stuff I write below "likethis" means the template called likethis and the quote marks indicate double curly brackets. I am talking here about 2D ie flat art. 3D art is different.

  1. Anything that is less that 300x300 and we have no other picture we could use. This is "fair use" and ONLY works by loading images direct to the en:wikipedia using "upload file". If the picture is of a person then they need to be (now) dead.
  2. Anything published by the photographer and labelled as "cc-by-sa" or "attribution" - Google images can find these and there are lots on Flickr.
  3. Anything published (in the USA!) before 1924 is free to use
  4. Anything published in the EU (and lots of other places) that is over 70 years old (Since the person who created it died) "PD-old-70", "PD-old-100" is much better as its lack of copyright is unquestionable.
  5. Anything that was published in the EU and is anonymous. Some argument is needed to show due diligence that the lack of author has not been assumed trivially. "EU-Anonymous"
  6. Photos that are less than 50 years old and taken in Australia. "PD-Australia" I mention this as the top of an iceberg. You may think that there is no picture of Ms. Jane Doe .... but did she visit Australia in the 1960s and did she appear in the papers? If so then TROVE may find them.
  7. look at link by country. Wikimedia has spent 19 years gathering together a working version of what is copyright, by country.

I think that's the best stuff I've learnt on this subject.... and there are lots of complications. e.g. I said 'anything' above, but it doesnt include stamps and money which has its own rules. Victuallers (talk) 08:56, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

... and some of the image owners are very nice. This is Viscountess Bridgeman (who lost a noted image ownership legal battle) with me at BBC 100 women where I told her about Women in Red. Her company sells image rights.

Don't be scared. Wikipedia is important, but not that important. As far as I know only one wiki editor has been threatened with court action and he released 3,000! hi-res images belonging (they said) to the National Portrait Gallery. The foundation (and I) offered to help with his legal fees. The NPG backed down and regretted every making the accusation as every one of the pictures was out of UK copyright and their claim was, at best, dubious. Image conglomerators make a section of their money selling rights (they don't own) to scared people. Wikimedia publishes images with a free to use license for anyone to use. If we do make a mistake then we say sorry, take it down and move on.... but I hope we don't take things down cos we are merely threatened. That would make image sellers into gangste... A couple quick things. First, many thanks for your review of Thomas A. Parham and the link cleanup. Second, I just wanted to bring to your attention that the reason for so many primary links is because I linked to each of the items listed in the Honors and Awards section. If you check again you'll see that of the 16 links to the "President's Bio," 12 are just that list. So on a quick look, it just appears there are more primary sources than there are. Also, if you'll review WP:PRIMARYCARE a bio on a university website would be an acceptable primary source. So would you mind taking another look, especially since you tagged it? Thanks again. Best. Hello, X4n6. I have noticed that you linked each award to the same reference, however per WP:REFNAME they still have to be formatted as one. I have looked at the resulting list before tagging the article, but there are still mostly primary non-independent sources. As stated in WP:GNG there should be independent reliable secondary sources backing information provided in the article. Information on the institution's page where the subject currently works can't be considered independent. Moreover the guideline you refer to states that "a page about the person on an employer's or publisher's website, is an acceptable (although possibly incomplete) primary source for information about what the person says about himself or herself. Such primary sources can normally be used for non-controversial facts about the person and for clearly attributed controversial statements". Taking that into account I don't think that the source provided qualifies to back all the facts mentioned. The list of Honors and Awards you linked includes those by acclaimed organizations - therefore another sources can be found to support those statements - not just a biography on the university website. I realize that the subject meets the notability criteria and there are sources that are still not presented in the article as well as other noteworthy information - such as list of publications - but for now the majority of sources are primary. I looked up other award lists on other BLPs and naturally, they're all over the map. Basically, I just didn't want someone saying the section lacked sources. So I thought about everything, from linking the heading itself, to linking a notice that the awards came from the University's page. (Which actually isn't a bad idea.) But, yes, many of the major awards are going to have multiple sources, so I'll just add them. So in the spirit that I acknowledge I have more homework to do, I'll just remove the tag and get to work. CSD tagging of soft redirects to Wiktionary

I would kindly ask that you self-revert your good-faith tagging of the soft redirect to Wiktionary of megathread. The criteria A1-A10 do not apply to redirects, including soft redirects.

BLPPROD

Hi there. I'm Barkeep49 an administrator on Wikipedia. I have removed the BLPPROD tag you placed on Matthew Russell (producer). The rules for BLPPROD are unique. So there can be no tag placed if there are any sources - even if they're poor ones like a dictionary reference. Once the tag is properly placed it can then only be removed if there is a reliable source placed. Does that make sense? @Barkeep49: hello! I am currently studying at NPP academy with BLPPROD as one of the assignments. The guideline says if there are no links that support statements about a subject. This only reference doesn't support any statement, it's basically definition of a word used in the article, which doesn't qualify as a proper reference at all. That were my thought when I decided to nominate it per BLPPROD. Are you saying any reference (even inappropriate that doesn't have anything to do with a subject) excludes the possibility of BLPPROD?
