Copyediting Johns Hopkins University[edit]

Terribly sorry, Lfstevens. I had begun my edit on 1/1 and remained signed in. I hadn't noticed your tag. Mea Culpa! Thanks for your hard (and excellent) work. Please continue. Rhetoricus (talk) 22:34, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Have a great '11. Lfstevens (talk) 23:42, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Logarithm[edit]

Hi, and many many thanks for your copyediting work on logarithm. Since you put the template there, I put the message here instead of correcting it myself: the {{nowrap}} template does not accept = inside, i.e.,

{{nowrap|a=b}} yields {{{1}}}

Thus, it is necessary to write

{{nowrap begin}}a=b{{nowrap end}} which gives a=b.Jakob.scholbach (talk) 17:05, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the catch. Lfstevens (talk) 23:09, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

copyedit[edit]

This is the first time I've encountered your guild's ce template, on logarithm. It seems odd to ask others to not interfere while you make such big changes to an article. Lots of your changes I'd like to just jump in and revert, like removing "In mathematics" at the front, and putting "Innumerate" where it seems incorrect. OK if I do? Dicklyon (talk) 02:17, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed a few things already, like a google docs viewer URL that you added, which I changed to the original pdf's url.Dicklyon (talk) 02:20, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The template serves mostly to prevent edit conflicts, which waste everyone's time. I'm copyediting (mostly) this piece at the behest of another editor who is trying to elevate it to GA status. If you were to wait until I finish, you might find your time better spent. You might have noticed that the requesting editor uses my talk page to give me feedbac, so that's another approach. Of course, you're welcome to ignore all that and make whatever changes you feel are required. It's a wiki...Lfstevens (talk) 02:50, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll make a few selected edits on sections and try to state out of your way. Thanks for your work. Dicklyon(talk) 02:51, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate your patience. Cheers! Lfstevens (talk) 02:58, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your edits today at Handel[edit]

Thanks for your copy-edit improvements today at Handel. I'm begging you to return to the article periodically as it's hard to keep up with the multitude of schoolboy-type edits that the article attracts. Thanks again.  GFHandel.  22:30, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All set. Lfstevens (talk) 01:06, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lfstevens! How great it is that you are copy-editing!

I've applauded all of your edits, except a few.

  • Per WP:MOS in mathematics (and more generally in mathematics), sentences cannot begin with mathematical symbols. Thus, I'll tweak your sentence beginning with "Conv(Q)".
  • Referring to the Shapley-Folkman lemma as Shapley-Folkman is great for American lectures (or textbooks if your name is Gilbert Strang). However, such abbreviations drive many mathematicians insane, and so should be avoided.
  • Even Homer nods, with this edit: It's important to discuss the average because the sum alone doesn't give interesting metric results (see Howe; or see Trockel, page 31).

Your fresh eyes are finding many flaws already! Thanks again for your help. (I hope that you see that I'm kept almost all your edits, and emulated a few with new edits of my own. 09:20, 20 January 2011 (UTC))

Best regards, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 08:39, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words. Appreciate the feedback. Lfstevens (talk) 16:11, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Lfstevens, I completed a major revision of the article, which I hope has moved it closer to credible A/FA candidacy. My familiar eyes skip too much when reading, so I trust that your fresh eyes could find flaws and suggest corrections, once again. (Feel free to pass, of course!) Thanks again for your last copy-editing and now for your consideration. Best regards,Kiefer.Wolfowitz 15:05, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hello,

thank you for your copy-edit. Now the article looks much better, and I hope it pass to the GAN. I hope you didn't merge or split paragraphs together or from each other, because the paragraphs should be split chronologically; each paragraph consists tournaments in three months. The first paragraph for example should have tournaments played in the months January, February and March.-- ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 10:09, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't following that rule. Is it mentioned somewhere? Lfstevens (talk) 15:30, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Crustaceans of Hawaii[edit]

I notice you recently (re-)created the category "Crustaceans of Hawaii". This is a poor idea for a category, in my opinion, since all the species you tagged have very wide distributions across the Indo-Pacific, and are therefore already in the categoryIndo-Pacific crustaceans. Adding a category for every country and territory in which each species can be found results in a cumbersome tide of categories, carrying little extra information. I think the appropriate medium to keep a record of which species occur in a given small area is to produce a list, for instance, of the crustaceans of Hawaii (with appropriate references). --Stemonitis (talk) 08:01, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I did it for Hawaii because those islands host many endemic species, and because Hawaii is a popular topic in many other respects. It's quite reasonable to aid its millions of ocean-focused visitors by simplifying access to related information. There are already many x of y categories out there, including half a dozen Crustaceans of .... If you really think it's a bad idea, I suggest taking it up with the powers that be. As time passes, I am editing/creating articles to fill out WP's content on Hawaiian marine life, and will increase the initially limited content in the category. Thanks for noticing. Lfstevens (talk) 16:39, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I, too, want to make the information as accessible as possible, and I gave a suggestion on how that might be implemented. Your category would be fine if we had articles on several of the Hawaiian endemic crustaceans, but so far, we have none. --Stemonitis (talk) 16:44, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a teensy weensy possibility that WP:OWN is indicated when one editor makes over 40% of all edits on an article, and 28 times as many edits as I have made :). Cheers. Collect (talk) 18:45, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This guy's weird. Anyway, it is true that I changed the word entrepreneur to magnate. I have put my rationale on the page, because there are few people that reach the distinction of magnate, that is, a person who has a high status and high influence within a certain field, and achieves their wealth therefrom. Entrepreneur is a very general term, and I personally do not like it because anyone who starts a business is arguably an entrepreneur. I certainly agree McMahon is both, but the better-fitting word would be magnate IMO. Collect has also been arguing that there was no consensus for my removal of the political positions section, which is also bogus. I asked you, and I had no one complain but him. And his only reason for complaining is the idea that I did it without his approval. Sorry, I didn't want to drag you into this, but this guy Collect is a serious bully.--Screwball23 talk 19:15, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Kindly redact all of your personal attacks. I made no such attacks on you. And since Lfstevens is the person whose edits you reverted (they were not my edits), I think that trying to attack me does not gain you any points at all. Thank you most kindly. Collect (talk) 19:25, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You absolutely did make personal attacks on me. You are trying to accuse me of wrongdoing because of the number of edits I make. And you still haven't come up with a logical reason why you are against the material.--Screwball23 talk 19:41, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:WQA please (notification that you are indirectly mentioned) Collect (talk) 21:19, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I had no idea of the depth of this feud. You've both built up a long list of fed-up coeditors. I hope you'll think about that. In the meantime, please leave me out of it. Lfstevens (talk) 22:22, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"magnate"[edit]

Note the discussion ongoing at Linda McMahon where one editor seems bent on "magnate" and removing "novice." Also note my attempt at commenting out personal material on the talk page which I felt was not in any way aimed at improving the articlewhile I was seeking to get the talk page back on track, but which was un-commented out by another editor. Cheers.Collect (talk) 06:52, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dude, see above. Lfstevens (talk) 15:15, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Note the person (you) who made the edits - if you do not wish to stand behind any of your edits, that is fine, but do not then expect others to respect them either. Cheers. Collect (talk) 16:20, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We all have better things to do than argue over this. Didn't you get the "castle...sand" reference? Whatever words we write will soon be washed away by someone smarter or dumber than we are. I changed just about every paragraph in those articles. If one of my edits lasts a few days less than the others, I'm not going to let it bug me. I do the best I can, and encourage others to do the same. I encourage you to do the best you can, and spend your hours as fruitfully as you can. Take a deep breath, and go look something up. Cheers! Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your mid-drive newsletter.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 79 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 64 have participated. Interest is high due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page, and many new and first-time copy editors have joined us for the drive. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. We have assisted in the promotion of seven articles to Good article status so far this month.

Progress report

We have already achieved our target of reducing the overall backlog by 10%; however, we have more work to do with the 2009 backlog. We have almost eliminated May 2009 and we only have some 700 articles left from 2009. It is excellent progress, so let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Tag[edit]

I presume the tally on the March copyedit drive is up to date, and that your work on Les Misérables (musical) is now complete. I believe you may have omitted to remove the {{GOCEinuse}} tag from the article. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 09:17, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I've only begun to work it. I got distracted by some personal stuff, which is still an issue. If want to work it, be my guest.
Lfstevens (talk) 19:39, 18 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's still 'yours'. I don't mean to step on any toes. It's just that I was going through contributors' lists and saw you listing the article as {{completed}} rather than {{working}}, which made me think maybe you had finished. You will note that I only did some work on formatting and linking. Silly me <blushes> – I guess I should have known work was not complete by the fact that such a large article usually needs a lot more edits. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 02:10, 19 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Logarithm FAC[edit]

Hi, there are two tiny complaints by a reviewer, Randomblue concerning language issues. I think I can leave things as they are (as far as these two things are concerned), but since I'm not a native speaker I thought I ask a professional to be sure. Could you please have a look here and comment (and/or fix)? Thank you,Jakob.scholbach (talk) 16:07, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Made some edits. Good luck! Lfstevens (talk) 17:49, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to bug you with such trivial matters, but since I'm not a native speaker I thought I better check back with someone into the language: FAC reviewer Cryptic C62 complains
"The discrete logarithm is concerned with solving the equation" People can be concerned. Cats can sometimes be concerned. Logarithms are never concerned. They are both laid back and inanimate.
I'm fairly sure this use of "to concern" is fully appropriate. Right or wrong? Thanks. Jakob.scholbach(talk) 20:22, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I also try to avoid animating the inanimate, but it's not a big crime to do so. Why not go with the shorter, "The discrete logarithm solves the equation" or maybe "aids in solving"? Lfstevens (talk) 17:37, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Willie Nelson[edit]

Hi, thanks for the corrections of the copy-edits. I also wanted to ask, why do you think that using as a source an autobiography is not reliable? IMO I think that a autobiography is even more reliable than the research of an author because, definitively the author knows the facts of his life better than anyone that does a research. Anyway the cited books were wrote by other authors and not by Nelson himself. The reason for I do this question is that I just want to know if its really considered unreliable because I want to nominate it to GA.--GDuwenTell me! 02:29, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have the greatest respect for Willie. I was thinking about Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Using the subject as a self-published source. While the subject has the best information, they may or not be biased. I have 0 issue with the specifics in the article. I was just thinking that it would be better to rely on an uninterested party. Lfstevens (talk) 06:35, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, but sometimes you know that it's not easy to find reliable sources for specific things. After some research the most complete is Willie Nelson: An Epic Life. I guess that I have now to read again the article and see if it's ready to nominate.--GDuwenTell me! 21:49, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to thank you for copyediting the article. You did a great job. -- The Egyptian Liberal(talk) 08:34, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Copyvio"[edit]

While fixing up some articles that you haphazardly cleaned up unaware of the style in place on several related pages, I came acrossthis edit. World Lingo is a Wikipedia mirror and therefore there was no copyvio there.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 18:33, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the cv catch. I appreciate it if you'd be a bit more specific in your other criticisms. Lfstevens(talk) 18:48, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You cleaned up Juukou B-Fighter and B-Fighter Kabuto last month and you removed several bullet points from the lists of characters within the articles. United Kingdom[edit]

Hi, editors have noticed several changes of meaning in the edits you and other GCE editors are currently making to United Kingdom. Is this the correct venue to discuss those, or at some central talk page for the Guild or at the local article? Not clear that such an important article should have meaning changes included in copyediting. Jamesinderbyshire(talk) 10:23, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry for requesting a copy edit and then asking for it to stop but would you mind halting for now in light of some of the concerns that have been raised? Thank you for your work so far. Harrison49 (talk) 12:08, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tool for you![edit]

Hi Lfstevens! I see that you are an copyeditor, and thought that you might appreciate some help with finding and eliminating multiple links (or wikification) from the article on which you are working.

I case you're not aware, all you need to do is install the following script:

importScript('User:Ucucha/duplinks.js');

onto Special:MyPage/skin.js, and you'll find a clickable link called "Highlight duplicate links" in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). It can be found both in normal view mode and edit mode. Press on it, and away you go! Have fun! --Sp33dyphil ©© 09:27, 8 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Jivesh Here[edit]

Hi. My name is Jivesh and i edit Beyonce-related articles on Wikipedia. I don't think we have talked to each other in the past. Well, i need someone to copy-edit one of the articles i wrote and i asked for help on Sandy's page where i was directed to you among other copy-editors (who are busy in RL). If you have time, please copy-edit "Run the World (Girls)". I will wait for a reply (cross my fingers for a positive one). Regards, Jivesh1205 (Talk) 07:29, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jivesh. Wish I could help but I got very backlogged during last month's backlog reduction drive, and your article is pretty extensive. Kudos for your incredible efforts on BK's behalf. I'd suggest you add your article to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests page. A bunch of editors watch that page for juicy articles. I'm sure one will be tempted.Lfstevens (talk)
Thanks for those kind words. Are you a fan of Beyonce? Let be for the c/e. It does not matter. Take it one day when you feel your backlog has diminished. For the time being, can you please do me a little favor. A reviewer at the FAC is opposing because he wants all the quotes in the first paragraph here to be transformed into original prose. Please do ti. It is only one paragraph. Jivesh1205 (Talk) 08:20, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
