Questions regarding repeated edits on American Legion Page

Hello Lieutcoluseng. I came across the page for the American Legion page today, and found it to be very bare. Upon reviewing the page's history, it seemed that it once had a very long and detailed History section, full of referenced information. However, on August 12, 2019, it seems you deleted all of it in an edit simply titled "Clean up". Seeing as you are a frequent editor of this page, I was wondering if you had any further explanation as to why you deleted so much information put there by other users, and have never bothered to expand the article further. I also noticed from your user page that you yourself are a member of the American Legion, so I just wanted to bring Wikipedia's conflict of interest guide to your attention.

Hi, Amtoastintolerant. Thank you for the cordial manner in which you brought the matter up. It's good to see such interest in the history of this great U.S. war-era veterans' organization. I am in fact familiar with Wikipedia's conflict of interest, but do not believe it applies in this particular case since the lengthy historical information to which you refer was simultaneously "pasted" into a newly created Wikipedia page titled, "History of the American Legion" especially built for the purpose. In retrospect, I might have made it a bit clearer to other Wikipedia editors the content was used verbatim in the building of that newly created Legion article but presumed my adding a "Main article: History of the American Legion" wikilink to the top of the old section would suffice. My first impression of the American Legion page was that the History section was pretty barebones, only really talking about the organization's formation and founding members. That's a good question, Amtoastintolerant. Perhaps, when life slows down a bit; something related to the 1919 founding, Paris and St. Louis caucuses, or 1st National Convention that "formalized" the establishment of this post-World War organization. For what it's worth, Neveselbert. The source is, in fact, published; but embedded as a "pop up" within the image itself. If you click on the image of Carter wearing the Legion cap in his New Georgia Encyclopedia article, it does state: "Carter is a member of the American Legion, a mutual-aid veterans organization formed in 1919." Hello there, Doug Weller. Thank you for your constructive comments regarding the recently reverted article edits. If you think those edits flawed after reviewing the only two classes of militia as defined by federal law here: "The Militia" , than who am I to contradict? But that said; I seriously doubt if any members of this elite group were to be charged with a future crime (hypothetically speaking, of course) they would be tried in anything other than a civilian court as a paramilitary group since they are not a state or federally recognized militia unit as defined by federal statute. At any rate, that was my only thought when originally editing the Wikipedia article. But, again, I will defer to your logic. Lieutcoluseng (talk) 01:37, 22 February 2024 (UTC)

@Lieutcoluseng HI. I think you need to review any edits where you have made similar changes as we only go by what reliably published sources say. See WP:RS. What you are doing is interpreting the law, ie deciding that it applies to a group, and that is [[WP:NOR|no original research. It isn't logic but our policy. Thanks. Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.
